Numerical prediction of the shear response of semi-prefabricated steel-concrete trussed beams
2016
Abstract In this study, the shear behavior of hybrid steel-trussed-concrete beams (HSTCBs) realized with prefabricated steel trusses embedded into a concrete core cast in situ, is investigated by means of Finite Element (FE) numerical simulations. HSTCBs do not behave as classical RC elements nor composite beams. Up to now, there are not specific design criteria in the building codes and the calculation of this type of beams is conducted by means of design-by-testing procedures. The knowledge of the material behavior as well as the understanding of the interaction between materials in contact is the first requirement for the definition of proper design procedures and calculation methods for…
The mechanics of continuous chip formation in oblique cutting with single-edged tool — Part I. Theory
1990
Abstract The paper presents a new point of view on oblique cutting mechanics when cutting with a single-edged tool. This is based on the main assumption that plastic flow of material during chip forming occurs in the set of planes normal to the cutting edge. As a consequence of the transformation of various orthocartesian systems some new generalized relationships for kinematics of oblique cutting operation and plastic deformation in the shear zone are derived.
Generalization of Shear Truss Model to the Case of SFRC Beams with Stirrups
2012
A theoretical model for shear strength evaluation of fibrous concrete beams reinforced with stirrups is proposed. The formulation is founded on the theory of plasticity and the stress field concepts, generalizing a known plastic model for calculating the bearing capacity of reinforced concrete beams, to the case of fibrous concrete. The beneficial effect of steel fibres is estimated taking into account the residual tensile strength of fibrous concrete, by modifying an analytical constitutive law which presents a plastic plateau as a post-peak branch. Around fifty results of experimental tests carried out on steel fibrous concrete beams available in the literature were collected, and a compa…
Variation in spawning time promotes genetic variability in population responses to environmental change in a marine fish.
2015
Common-garden experiments suggest that the response of Atlantic cod larvae to temperature differs among populations that spawn at different times of year. Populations appear to be adapted to the temperatures experienced during the larval stage at a small spatial scale, despite a lack of physical barriers to gene flow.
Potential Benefits and Limitations of Enriched Environments and Cognitive Activity on Age-Related Behavioural Decline
2011
The main aim of this chapter is to review preclinical studies that have evaluated interventions which may aid in preventing or delaying age-related behavioural decline. Animal models of Environmental Enrichment (EE) are useful for evaluating the influence of cognitive, physical and social stimulation in mitigating cognitive decline at different ages. The EE paradigm has been proposed as a non-invasive treatment for alleviating age-related memory impairment and neurodegenerative diseases. While in this complex environment, rodents can be stimulated at different levels (physical, social, cognitive and sensorial), although a synergism between all these components is likely to play an important…
Proteomic signature of the Dravet syndrome in the genetic Scn1a-A1783V mouse model
2021
AbstractBackgroundDravet syndrome is a rare, severe pediatric epileptic encephalopathy associated with intellectual and motor disabilities. Proteomic profiling in a mouse model of Dravet syndrome can provide information about the molecular consequences of the genetic deficiency and about pathophysiological mechanisms developing during the disease course.MethodsA knock-in mouse model of Dravet syndrome with Scn1a haploinsufficiency was used for whole proteome, seizure and behavioral analysis. Hippocampal tissue was dissected from two-(prior to epilepsy manifestation) and four-(following epilepsy manifestation) week-old male mice and analyzed using LC-MS/MS with label-free quantification. Pro…
Mixed support for an alignment between phenotypic plasticity and genetic differentiation in damselfly wing shape
2023
The relationship between genetic differentiation and phenotypic plasticity can provide information on whether plasticity generally facilitates or hinders adaptation to environmental change. Here, we studied wing shape variation in a damselfly (Lestes sponsa) across a latitudinal gradient in Europe that differed in time constraints mediated by photoperiod and temperature. We reared damselflies from northern and southern populations in the laboratory using a reciprocal transplant experiment that simulated time-constrained (i.e. northern) and unconstrained (southern) photoperiods and temperatures. After emergence, adult wing shape was analysed using geometric morphometrics. Wings from individu…
Experimental evolution in fluctuating environments: tolerance measurements at constant temperatures incorrectly predict the ability to tolerate fluct…
2015
The ability to predict the consequences of fluctuating environments on species distribution and extinction often relies on determining the tolerances of species or genotypes in different constant environments (i.e. determining tolerance curves). However, very little is known about the suitability of measurements made in constant environments to predict the level of adaptation to rapidly fluctuating environments. To explore this question, we used bacterial clones adapted to constant or fluctuating temperatures and found that measurements across a range of constant temperatures did not indicate any adaptation to fluctuating temperatures. However, adaptation to fluctuating temperatures was onl…
Contributions to the study of the Visco-elastoplastic behavior of a flax fiber – epoxy resin structural composite
2020
The study presented in the manuscript is positioned in a large context of development of new materials, with a reduced environmental impact. From the possibilities currently under scrutiny (especially in Europe), flax fiber reinforced composites are the most promising. Thanks to their low density and high mechanical properties, as well as their low energy costs, fuel the idea of their usage in structural composites, by replacing glass fibers. These biocomposites are already implemented in numerous applications. However, several scientifical and technical unknowns, especially their long-term behavior, are hindering their use in domains of high load conditions. The thesis proposes to study the…
The effect of vertical ground movement on masonry walls simulated through an elastic–plastic interphase meso-model: a case study
2019
The present paper proposes an interphase model for the simulation of damage propagation in masonry walls in the framework of a mesoscopic approach. The model is thermodynamically consistent, with constitutive relations derived from a Helmholtz free potential energy. With respect to classic interface elements, the internal stress contribute is added to the contact stresses. It is considered that damage, in the form of loss of adhesion or cohesion, can potentially take place at each of the two blocks–mortar physical interfaces. Flow rules are obtained in the framework of the Theory of Plasticity, considering bilinear domains of ‘Coulomb with tension cut-off’ type. The model aims to be a first…
