Lamella-forming ABC triblock terpolymers are convenient building blocks for the synthesis of soft Janus nanoparticles (JNPs) by crosslinking the B domain that is “sandwiched” between A and C lamellae. Despite thorough synthetic variation of the B fraction to control the geometry of the sandwiched microphase, so far only Janus spheres, cylinders, and sheets have been obtained. In this combined theoretical and experimental work, we show that the blending of polybutadiene homopolymer (hPB) into lamella morphologies of polystyrene-block-polybutadiene-block-polymethylmethacrylate (SBM) triblock terpolymers allows the continuous tuning of the polybutadiene (PB) microphase. We systematically vary …

Effect of adding new phosphazene compounds to poly(butylene terephthalate)/polyamide blends. I: Preliminary study in a batch mixer

2005

Abstract Poly(butylene terephthalate) (PBT) and a sample of polyamide have been melt processed in the presence of two new phosphazene compounds, namely 2,2-dichloro-4,4,6,6-bis[spiro(2′,2″dioxy-1′,1″biphenyl)]cyclotriphosphazene (2Cl-CP) and 2,2-bis-(2-methoxy-4-methyleneoxy-phenoxy)-4,4,6,6,-bis[spiro(2′,2″dioxy-1′,1″biphenyl)]cyclophosphazene (CP-2EPOX). The blends were prepared by using polyamide 6 (PA6) at 25/75 w/w and 75/25 w/w composition. In order to perform a preliminary analysis on the behaviour of the blends, the materials were prepared in a batch mixer. The materials have been completely characterized from a rheological, morphological, mechanical point of view. The results indic…

Controlled Synthesis of Multi-Arm Star Polyether-Polycarbonate Polyols Based on Propylene Oxide and CO2

2013

Multi-arm star copolymers based on a hyperbranched poly(propylene oxide) polyether-polyol (hbPPO) as a core and poly(propylene carbonate) (PPC) arms are synthesized in two steps from propylene oxide (PO), a small amount of glycidol and CO2 . The PPC arms are prepared via carbon dioxide (CO2 )/PO copolymerization, using hbPPO as a multifunctional macroinitiator and the (R,R)-(salcy)CoOBzF5 catalyst. Star copolymers with 14 and 28 PPC arms, respectively, and controlled molecular weights in the range of 2700-8800 g mol(-1) are prepared (Mw /Mn = 1.23-1.61). Thermal analysis reveals lowered glass transition temperatures in the range of -8 to 10 °C for the PPC star polymers compared with linear …

Effects of Moisture and Stresses on the Structure and Properties of Polyester Resin

2004

The results of a complex study of structural changes in a cured Norpol 440 polyester resin under the action of damp environment and mechanical loading are presented. A considerable effect of absorbed moisture on the structure and some characteristics of the material is revealed by using thermophysical methods and X-ray diffractometry. The joint effect of moisture and mechanical stress is estimated by investigating the creep in stationary and nonstationary moisture conditions. The anisotropy of the material structure formed during creep is evaluated from the results of dilatometric measurements. It is found that the degree of anisotropy of the material after creep accompanied by moisture sor…

Solid state polymerization of new polyesters containing diacetylenic groups

1986

Synthesis and properties of some new polyesters of 10, 12-docosadiyn-1, 22-diol are described. The diyn-polyesters as films became coloured polydiacetylenic films on exposure to UV radiation and their properties were studied.

Microbial production of biopolymers from the renewable resource wheat straw.

2014

Aims Production of poly-s-hydroxybutyrate (PHB) and the chemical basic compound lactate from the agricultural crop ‘wheat straw’ as a renewable carbon resource. Methods and Results A thermal pressure hydrolysis procedure for the breakdown of wheat straw was applied. By this means, the wheat straw was converted into a partially solubilized hemicellulosic fraction, consisting of sugar monomers, and an insoluble cellulosic fraction, containing cellulose, lignin and a small portion of hemicellulose. The insoluble cellulosic fraction was further hydrolysed by commercial enzymes in monomers. The production of PHB from the sugar monomers originating from hemicellulose or cellulose was achieved by …

High crystallinity polyethylene obtained in biphasic polymerization using pyridinium chloroaluminate ionic liquid

2014

A series of N-n-alkylpyridinium chloroaluminate ionic liquids [C n -py][AlCl4] (where n-alkyl = n-butyl, n-hexyl, and n-octyl) was applied as a medium of the Cp2TiCl2 catalyst, activated by AlEtCl2 or AlEt2Cl, to evaluate the influence of the studied ionic liquids on the performance of the biphasic ionic liquid/hexane ethylene polymerization and the properties of the produced polyethylene (PE). The best results were obtained using N-n-butylpyridinium chloroaluminate. The polyethylene obtained in the biphasic polymerization have the high crystallinity, which was confirmed by DSC, WAXS and PALS methods, as well as the bulk density comparable to commercial HDPE. These unique properties results…

Hyperbranched polyethylenimines as versatile precursors for the preparation of different type of unimolecular micelles

2007

Abstract Hyperbranched polyethylenimine (HPEI) was successfully employed as precursor for the preparation of unimolecular inverted and aqueous micelles. The unimolecular inverted micelles (UIMs) obtained by the amidation of HPEI with 1,1′-carbonyldiimidazole (CDI) activated palmitic acid exhibited high encapsulation efficiency for hydrophilic anionic dyes and the efficiency could be enhanced significantly by decreasing the degree of amidation or quaternizing the residual amines. The weight ratio of loaded guests to the amidated HPEIs was not dependent on the molecular weight of HPEI core when the degree of amidation was kept constant. Decreasing the length of the aliphatic chain from 16 to …

Core–shell-type multiarm star polyethylenimine-block-poly(ɛ-caprolactone): Synthesis and guest encapsulation potential

2006

Novel multiarm star copolymers with poly(e-caprolactone) (PCL) as the arms and hyperbranched polyethylenimine (HPEI) as the core have been successfully prepared by the tin(II) 2-ethylhexanoate catalyzed ring-opening polymerization of e-caprolactone (CL) with HPEI used directly as a macroinitiator. Not only primary but also secondary amine groups of HPEI participate in initiating the ring-opening polymerization of CL with almost 100% initiation efficiency. The average degree of polymerization of the PCL arms can be controlled by the feed ratio of the monomers to the initiating sites. Because of the polarity difference of the PCL arms and HPEI core, the obtained multiarm star polymers display…

Excess free energy of nanoparticles in a polymer brush

2008

Abstract We present an efficient method for direct determination of the excess free energy Δ F of a nanoparticle inserted into a polymer brush. In contrast to Widom's insertion method, the present approach can be efficiently implemented by Monte Carlo or Molecular Dynamics methods also in a dense environment. In the present investigation the method is used to determine the free energy penalty Δ F ( R , D ) for placing a spherical particle with an arbitrary radius R at different positions D between the grafting plane and the brush surface. Deep inside the brush, or for dense brushes, one finds Δ F  ∝  R 3 whereas for shallow nanoclusions Δ F  ∝  R 2 , regardless of the particle interaction (…
