Surface charge, effective charge and dispersion/aggregation properties of nanoparticles
2003
A careful investigation of the relationship between surface properties and colloidal behaviour of nanometric particles in concentrated media has shed some light on the important parameters that must be controlled in order to improve the dispersion of mineral particles. Experimental methods such as rheology and osmometry reveal that the aggregation/dispersion process is not only a matter of electrostatics as stated by classical theories. In practice, the relationship between the surface charge and the state of dispersion is probably much less straightforward than generally assumed by the classical argument stating that the higher the surface charge, the higher the electrostatic repulsion bet…
Utilization of Poly(vinylchloride) and Poly(vinylidenefluoride) as Macroinitiators for ATRP Polymerization of Hydroxyethylmethacrylate. Electroanalyt…
2015
The utilization of poly(vinylchloride) (PVC) and poly(vinylidenefluoride) (PVDF) as macroinitiators for atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of hydroxyethylmethacrylate (HEMA) was studied performing electroanalytical investigations and “grafting from” experiments in order to achieve information on the possibility of modifying such commercial polymers by this controlled free radical polymerization technique. This study was performed changing various operating parameters such as the nature of the copper salt, the ligand, the solvent, the temperature and the reaction time. Electroanalytical data suggest that PVC can be easily activated by both CuCl/ Tris(2-pyridylmethyl)amine (TPMA) and…
"A versatile post-polymerization modification method for polyglutamic acid: synthesis of orthogonal reactive polyglutamates and their use in ""click …
2013
In this article we describe a versatile methodology for the synthesis of polyglutamic acid (PGA) derivatives bearing orthogonal reactive sites. The reactive groups enable selective conjugation chemistry by copper catalyzed azide-alkyne coupling (CuAAC). PGA was derived in aqueous media as well as in organic media using 4-(4,6-dimethoxy-1,3,5-triazin-2-yl)-4-methyl morpholinium chloride (DMTTM) salts. The spectra of attached chemical moieties ranges from simple PEGylation with 2,5,8,11,14,17,20-heptaoxadocosan-22-amine (mEG(6)NH2) to the incorporation of propargylamine, 11-azido-3,6,9-trioxaundecan-1-amine (NH2-EG(2)N-3), and 20-azido-3,6,9,12,15,18-hexaoxaicosan-1-amine (NH2-EG(6)N-3). Here…
ABC triblock polyampholytes containing a neutral hydrophobic block, a polyacid and a polybase
1997
Well defined ABC triblock copolymers of polystyrene-block-poly(2-vinylpyridine)-block-poly(tert-butyl methacrylate) and polystyrene-block-poly(4-vinylpyridine)-block-poly(tert-butyl methacrylate) were synthesized by sequential living anionic polymerization in tetrahydrofuran. Triblock copolymers with narrow molecular weight distribution were obtained. Hydrolysis of the poly(tert-butyl methacrylate) block yields polystyrene-block-polyvinylpyridine-block-poly(methacrylic acid) which demonstrates pH-dependent solution properties. Interpolymer complexation of the polyvinylpyridine and poly(methacrylic acid) blocks in the micellar solution is studied in dependence of the pH in solution by potent…
Sequential conversion of orthogonally functionalized diblock copolymers based on pentafluorophenyl esters
2010
Statistic and block copolymers exhibiting activated ester side groups were synthesized by reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer polymerization in the presence of cumyl dithiobenzoate, benzyl dithiobenzoate, and 4-cyano-4-((thiobenzoyl)sulfanyl)pentanoic acid as chain transfer agents. Pentafluorophenyl methacrylate and pentafluorophenyl 4-vinylbenzoate were used to enable a sequential functionalization of the obtained copolymers by conversion of the activated esters with different amines. 1H NMR spectroscopy, 19F NMR spectroscopy, and FTIR spectroscopy showed the successful step-by-step conversion of the different activated esters by aniline followed by aliphatic amines, thereby r…
On the anionic polymerization of dialkylaminoisoprenes, 3. A nuclear magnetic resonance study of the structure of oligo[5-(N,N-diisopropylamino)isopr…
1995
The structure of oligo[(5-N,N-diisopropylamino)isoprenyllithium] (number-average degree of polymerization Pn = 1-2) prepared by reaction of alkyllithium with 5-(N,N-diisopropylamino)-isoprene1 in nonpolar (benzene) and polar (tetrahydrofuran) solvents has been studied by 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy. In tetrahydrofuran, as expected, the negative charge at the terminal chain unit is more delocalized than in benzene and, consequently, the carbon-lithium bond has a more ionic character. In both solvents the living chain end shows a cisoid-4, 1-structure. No cistrans isomerization could be detected. This independence of the carbanion structure of the solvent polarity is explained by the complexa…
