Precocity of the acquisition of language and type II spinal muscular atrophy in 3–4-year-old children: a study of 12 cases

We studied the development of language in 3-4-year-old children with type II spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) (10 boys and two girls), aged 36-47 months (mean age 39.83+/-4.68 months) and compared our findings to a control group of 26 healthy children (mean age 40.00+/-4.43 months, 22 boys and four girls). We carried out a lexicogrammatical analysis of the data and we observed significant differences in the "vocabulary", "nouns", "verbs", "words" and "adverbs" variables between the children with SMA and the controls. Muscle Activity During Unilateral vs. Bilateral Battle Rope Exercises.

High training intensity is important for efficient strength gains. Although battle rope training is metabolically demanding, no studies have quantified intensity of muscle activity during this type of training. This study analyzes muscle activity during unilateral alternating waves vs. bilateral waves of battle rope training. Predicting domain-specific actions in expert table tennis players activates the semantic brain network.

Motor expertise acquired during long-term training in sports enables top athletes to predict the outcomes of domain-specific actions better than nonexperts do. Topological insulators (TIs) are a new quantum state of matter which have gapless surface states inside the bulk energy gap. Starting with the discovery of two dimensional TIs, the HgTe-based quantum wells, many new topological materials have been theoretically predicted and experimentally observed. Currently known TI materials can possibly be classified into two families, the HgTe family and the Bi2Se family. Accurate color predictability based on a spectral retardance model of a twisted-nematic liquid-crystal display

Abstract In this work we present the application of a simple physical model to accurately predict the broadband spectral transmittance and colorimetric properties of a twisted-nematic liquid crystal display (TNLCD). We spectroscopically calibrate the retardance parameters to evaluate the spectrum of the light transmitted by a TNLCD sandwiched between two linear polarizers. When the TNLCD is illuminated with a broadband light source, the full spectrum can be predicted as a function of the addressed gray level for any arbitrary orientation of the polarizers. Achromatic Varifocal Metalens for the Visible Spectrum

Metasurface optics provide an ultra-thin alternative to conventional refractive lenses. A present challenge is in realizing metasurfaces that exhibit tunable optical properties and achromatic behavior across the visible spectrum. Here, we report the design, fabrication, and characterization of metasurface lenses ("metalenses") that use asymmetric TiO2 nanostructures to induce a polarization-dependent optical response. By rotating the polarization of linearly-polarized input light, the focal length of a 40 micrometer-diameter metalens is tuned from 220-550 micrometers with nearly diffraction-limited performance.
