Comparing three experiential learning methods and their effect on medical students' attitudes to learning communication skills.
2012
Background: Despite numerous studies exploring medical students’ attitudes to communication skills learning (CSL), there are apparently no studies comparing different experiential learning methods and their influence on students’ attitudes. Aims: We compared medical students’ attitudes to learning communication skills before and after a communication course in the data as a whole, by gender and when divided into three groups using different methods. Method: Second-year medical students (n ¼ 129) were randomly assigned to three groups. In group A (n ¼ 42) the theatre in education method, in group B (n ¼ 44) simulated patients and in group C (n ¼ 43) role-play were used. The data were gathere…
Effect of transfection with PLP2 antisense oligonucleotides on gene expression of cadmium-treated MDA-MB231 breast cancer cells
2012
Emerging evidence indicates that cadmium (Cd) is able to regulate gene expression, drastically affecting the pattern of transcriptional activity in human normal and pathological cells. We have already shown that exposure of MDA-MB231 breast cancer cells to 5 μM CdCl(2) for 96 h, apart from significantly affecting mitochondrial metabolism, induces modifications of the expression level of genes coding for members of stress response-, mitochondrial respiration-, MAP kinase-, NF-κB-, and apoptosis-related pathways. In the present study, we have expanded the knowledge on the biological effects of Cd-breast cancer cell interactions, indicating PLP2 (proteolipid protein-2) as a novel member of the…
Glücksspielcharakter von Computerspielen
2019
The illusion of contact: Insights from Winnicott’s 1952 letter to Klein
2021
Using Winnicott’s theory, this article produces an account of the individual’s relation to a given conceptual framework. Whereas Winnicott’s ideas have been almost exclusively discussed in developmental and psychopathological contexts, the present article extends Winnicott’s theory and applies it to the problem of interpersonal understanding. Taking a lead from one of Winnicott’s letters to Klein, the article investigates the problem of expressing one’s idiosyncratic insights in the confines of a given conceptual framework. The article examines Winnicott’s theory of compliance and creativity, discusses the plea that Winnicott makes to Klein, analyses the encounter with a “dead language”, an…
An adaptive display to treat stress-related disorders: EMMA's World
2009
ABSTRACT Most of the virtual environments currently available in the field of psychological treatments were designed to solve a specific problem. Our research group has developed a versatile virtual reality system (an adaptive display) called ‘EMMA's world’, which can address a wide range of problems. It was designed to assist in clinical situations where a person has suffered a stressful experience, for example post-traumatic stress disorder, adjustment disorder, and pathological grief. To accomplish therapeutic goals, a series of emotional virtual elements are used and personalised so that they are meaningful to the user and contain the fundamental emotional elements that the person must …
Eva Figes’s Remediation of The Book of Margery Kempe for BBC Radio 2
2017
In 1985, BBC Radio 2 broadcast the radio play The True Tale of Margery Kempe by contemporary writer Eva Figes (born 1932). The text is a remediation of The Book of Margery Kempe which recovers and gives new life to the tale of Margery Kempe re-instituting the memory of a long-lost manuscript and at the same time giving it back the original characteristics of orality. The narrative strategies adopted by Eva Figes in this adaptation for the radio of the medieval text are influenced by questions linked to the issue of the authorial voice. The transformation of the medium from written text to oral text for the radio gives Figes the opportunity, through directions to the actors, the use of monol…
Designing Playful Inquiry-Based Mathematical Learning Activities for Kindergarten
2018
This study addresses issues related to the process of designing mathematical activities for kindergarten based on the constructs of playful learning and inquiry. The mathematical activities were designed for 5-year-old children in a Norwegian kindergarten setting. In order to address this design process, we focus at issues of mediating design principles and ideas to kindergarten teachers, who are the ones to orchestrate and implement the mathematical activities with children. The study is situated within a design research methodology in which observations, written and personal communication have been used as sources of data. Our analysis shows that the kindergarten teacher closely followed …
Differential display reverse transcription PCR reveals IL-1 induced gene expression patterns in human articular chondrocytes
1995
IL-1 exerts diverse effects on the metabolism of articular chondrocytes, including inhibition of proteoglycan synthesis and stimulation of matrix metallopro teinase synthesis. Therefore it is believed that IL-1 might play an important role in cartilage degradation in osteo- and rheumatoid arthritis. To improve our understanding of IL-1 induced effects on overall gene expression patterns of human articular chondrocytes, wc used a novel mRNA fingerprinting technique: Differential Display Reverse Transcription-PCR (DDRT-PCR) (Liang and Pardee 1992). The reported high sensitivity of this powerful technique promised to enable work with human articular cartilage, a tissue from which only small am…
Ambienti aumentati e archeologia dei media
2018
Exposure to video display terminals and risk of small-for-gestational-age birth
2010
In this study, the authors analyzed the association between video display terminal (VDT) use before and during the three trimesters of pregnancy and risk of small-for-gestational-age (SGA) birth in a case-control study. The cases for this study were 555 women who delivered SGA births. The controls were 1966 women who gave birth at term to healthy infants of normal weight. In terms of the length of exposure, the odds ratios (OR) of SGA birth were 1.2 for less than one hour and 1.3 for between two and 20 hours per week. For higher usage (more than 20 hours per week), the OR was 1.2 (95% CI: [Confidence Interval] 0.9-1.7). The authors conclude that this study does not show any association betw…
