‘‘What an Eccentric Performance" : Storytelling in Online Let's Plays

2019

In this article, I examine the phenomenon called Let’s Play (LP) and conduct a narrative analysis on two LPs made of Sierra Entertainment’s Phantasmagoria games. The LPs tell viewers a story different from the one told in the games, that is, they tell the story of the player rather than that of the game. In that story, the experience of playing a video game is revealed to the audience. This story would be hidden without the player-narrators know as LPs around the world. I conduct my analysis by describing seven different narrative elements that form the narration of a LP and explain how these elements together form this story of the player. peerReviewed

"Rokuja et pääse karkuun ilman jumpbootseja" : nonce borrowings in video gaming environment

2015

Towards Natural Engagement in Nonexhibitional Dramatic Role-Plays

2003

Modern language teaching and drama have long had a tenuous relationship. Foreign/second language teaching (F/SLT) and Language for Specific Purposes (LSP) instruction often mistakenly associate drama with learning games and role-play simulations. However, these remedial activities, though useful, offer only limited opportunities for natural speech interaction. This article argues that, as a natural dialogical process of cognitive and affective involvement, nonexhibitional dramatic role-play generates authentic meaning through action and personal commitment.

Teacher beliefs about student agency in whole-class playing

2022

This study explores music teachers’ beliefs of student agency in whole-class playing and investigates what characterises student agency through teachers’ values, actions and observations within this unique multimodal and -dimensional learning environment. Our abductive analysis of 11 interviews reveals that the role of teacher support is significant in enacting students’ agency. This study provides insights into student agency through the eyes and actions of teachers within the context of whole-class playing and suggests that the enactment of different aspects of student agency is an essential feature necessary for whole-class playing to succeed. peerReviewed

A comparative case study of Sony Computer Entertainment's crisis communication efforts during two PlayStation Network crises

2015

This study is about the crisis communication efforts of Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE) during two crises. Their PlayStation Network online service was hacked in 2011 and crashed by artificially high traffic in 2014. The purpose of the study is to examine the communication strategies of SCE and the development those strategies underwent between the two crises. This is done by comparing their crisis communication strategies with the Contingency Theory of strategic conflict management. This is done by a comparative case study methodology, utilising content analysis and gauging the impact of the crisis communication efforts through select media reactions. The study is significant in that it …

Gradient and Lipschitz Estimates for Tug-of-War Type Games

2021

We define a random step size tug-of-war game and show that the gradient of a value function exists almost everywhere. We also prove that the gradients of value functions are uniformly bounded and converge weakly to the gradient of the corresponding $p$-harmonic function. Moreover, we establish an improved Lipschitz estimate when boundary values are close to a plane. Such estimates are known to play a key role in the higher regularity theory of partial differential equations. The proofs are based on cancellation and coupling methods as well as an improved version of the cylinder walk argument. peerReviewed
