The role of sport-specific play and practice during childhood in the development of adolescent Finnish team sport athletes

2016

This study sought to understand the role of sport-specific play and practice in the development of adolescent team sport athletes in the Finnish sports development system. Participants were male, 15-year-old soccer (n = 141), ice hockey (n = 204), and basketball (n = 96) players, divided into three groups based on the amount of sport-specific play and practice experienced during childhood. Data were collected with sport-specific inventories of practice history, tactical skills, psychological skills, and sport-specific skill test. Results showed that athletes with more sport-specific play and practice during childhood had more sport-specific play and practice during adolescence, better techn…

Verso una dimensione narrativa delle mappe

2021

Between the idea and the construction of the architecture the drawing plays a central role to connect the different protagonists of a project. It involves the community by envisaging unprecedented perspectives. Writing is useful to explicit the graphics and establish a new order in the design reasoning. The relationships between signs and meanings multiply in recent information systems in which it seems possible to conclude a lot (thanks to numerical and spatial data) but sometimes a synthesis is missing though that synthesis is fundamental to create new physical experiences. For the exploration of the use of different architectural languages and for the push towards the project rather than a sterile cataloging the case of the Piano Programma for the historic center of Palermo (Giuseppe Samonà Giancarlo De Carlo Umberto Di Cristina Anna Maria Sciarra Borzí 1979-82) reveals to be ambitious. Giuseppe Samonà integrates the classical representation based on Monge's projections with photographs and iconic drawings associating signs with a linguistic-structural communication capable of expressing the relationships between the parts at the basis of a morphological approach to the plan. The graphic story ("second language") of the urban fabric has creative implications expressed by images and annotations ("first language") useful for decoding them. Since the plan focuses on the potential of a storytelling that orients the imagination of its readers (designers citizens politicians) it can contribute to the study titled "B4R– BRANDING 4 RESILIENCE - Tourist infrastructure as a tool to enhance small villages by drawing resilient communities and new open habitats” as a starting point for the mapping in which GIS analysis and multidisciplinary data (geometric topological and quantitative) relating to some villages of the internal Sicily shall translate into a new architectural urban and landscape quality.Settore ICAR/14 - Composizione Architettonica E Urbana

Free segmentation in rendered 3D images through synthetic impulse response in integral imaging

2016

Integral Imaging is a technique that has the capability of providing not only the spatial, but also the angular information of three-dimensional (3D) scenes. Some important applications are the 3D display and digital post-processing as for example, depth-reconstruction from integral images. In this contribution we propose a new reconstruction method that takes into account the integral image and a simplified version of the impulse response function (IRF) of the integral imaging (InI) system to perform a two-dimensional (2D) deconvolution. The IRF of an InI system has a periodic structure that depends directly on the axial position of the object. Considering different periods of the IRFs we …

Isolation of Differentially Expressed Genes in Epidermal Langerhans Cells

1997

Epidermal Langerhans cells (LC) represent immature dendritic cells (DC) resident in the skin, which are not yet able to prime naive T cells1. In vitro cultivation of LC in the presence of keratinocytes, supplying survival and differentiation signals, induces maturation events in LC2. These are highlighted by the downregulation of the biosynthesis of MHC class II molecules3, by the upregulation of the surface expression of adhesion and costimulatory molecules like CD80, CD86, CD54 and CD584,5, and by the acquisition of a potent immunostimulatory capacity for T cells6. Mature LC are potent inducers of naive T cells. Thus LC represent an ideal model system to investigate the maturation of DC (…

The effect of social information from live demonstrators compared to video playback on blue tit foraging decisions.

2019

Video playback provides a promising method to study social interactions, and the number of video playback experiments has been growing in recent years. Using videos has advantages over live individuals as it increases the repeatability of demonstrations, and enables researchers to manipulate the features of the presented stimulus. How observers respond to video playback might, however, differ among species, and the efficacy of video playback should be validated by investigating if individuals’ responses to videos are comparable to their responses to live demonstrators. Here, we use a novel foraging task to compare blue tits’ (Cyanistes caeruleus) responses to social information from a live …

WIN induces apoptotic cell death in human colon cancer cells through a block of autophagic flux dependent on PPARγ down-regulation.

2014

Cannabinoids have been reported to possess anti-tumorigenic activity in cancer models although their mechanism of action is not well understood. Here, we show that the synthetic cannabinoid WIN55,212-2 (WIN)-induced apoptosis in colon cancer cell lines is accompanied by endoplasmic reticulum stress induction. The formation of acidic vacuoles and the increase in LC3-II protein indicated the involvement of autophagic process which seemed to play a pro-survival role against the cytotoxic effects of the drug. However, the enhanced lysosomal membrane permeabilization (LMP) blocked the autophagic flux after the formation of autophagosomes as demonstrated by the accumulation of p62 and LC3, two ma…

Complexity of IL-1β induced gene expression pattern in human articular chondrocytes

1997

The mRNA fingerprinting technique, differential display reverse transcription polymerase chain (DDRT-PCR), was used to detect changes in the overall pattern of gene expression in human articular knee chondrocytes-induced by interleukin-1 beta (IL-1 beta), the prototypical inducer of catabolic responses in degenerate joint diseases. One hundred different primer combinations generated approximately 10,000 different PCR fragments for IL-1 beta treated, as well as for untreated human chondrocytes, cultivated in alginate beads. This represented 53% of all expressed chondrocyte genes as based on statistical considerations. Side by side comparisons of differential display patterns originating from…

Type V collagen and protein kinase C η down-regulation in 8701-BC breast cancer cells.

2011

We previously reported that ductal infiltrating carcinomas (d.i.c.) of the human breast display profound modifications of the stromal architecture, associated with anomalous collagen composition. Among the major alterations observed in the interstitial collagen, the relative increase of type V collagen content was detected. When type V collagen was used as an ‘‘in vitro’’ substrate for 8701-BC d.i.c. cells, it appeared able to restrain cell growth, inhibit cell motility and invasion ‘‘in vitro’’, and modify the expression levels of genes coding for apoptosis factors, caspases and stress response proteins. In the present paper we demonstrate that type V collagen induces the down-regulation o…
