Designing Touchless Gestural Interactions for Public Displays In-the-Wild

2015

Public displays, typically equipped with touchscreens, are used for interactions in public spaces, such as streets or fairs. Currently low-cost visual sensing technologies, such as Kinect-like devices and high quality cameras, allow to easily implement touchless interfaces. Nevertheless, the arising interactions have not yet been fully investigated for public displays in-the-wild (i.e. in appropriate social contexts where public displays are typically deployed). Different audiences, cultures and social settings strongly affect users and their interactions. Besides gestures for public displays must be guessable to be easy to use for a wide audience. Issues like these could be solved with use…

La mauresque sur scène et les contacts musico-teatraux entre l'Italie et la ville de Dubrovnik au XVIe siècle

2019

The moresca, and the related forms of weapon dance, either spread in the Mediterranean basin or in several countries of Central and Southern Europe, was a kind of 16-century choreography. Born as a battle between Saracens and Christian knights, this dance inspired different kinds of mimic spectacle that served as a part of comedies and pastoral plays. The article analyses the relationship between the moresca intermingled in the pastorals of Dubrovnik and Siena, both marked by a strong presence of dances, songs and choruses to increase the fantastic and sentimental emphasis of the performances. Both Dubrovnik’s and Italian’s plays were characterized by shepherds, nymphs, and rustic men (the …

"'Mens sana in corpore sano': the Rhetoric of the Body in Shakespeare's Roman and Late Plays"

2010

In many of his stage settings Shakespeare appears to be obsessed by the idea, image, or concept of the body in its multiple literal and figurative aspects and by the dramaturgical potentiality of the language of corporeality. The rhetoric of the body does in fact lend itself to an impressive series of striking theatrical forms since it is innate to the physicality of performance and to the natural ‘spectacle’ of the dramatic actio. What indubitably makes the corporeal semantics of Shakespeare’s language even more fertile is the social, political, and ideological value acquired by this kind of rhetoric in the culture of the early Renaissance. In the history plays in particular the political …

3D objects descriptors methods: Overview and trends

2017

International audience; Object recognition or object's category recognition under varying conditions is one of the most astonishing capabilities of human visual system. The scientists in computer vision have been trying for decades to reproduce this ability by implementing algorithms and providing computers with appropriate tools. Hence, several intelligent systems have been proposed. To act in this field, numerous approaches have been proposed. In this paper we present an overview of the current trend in 3D objects recognition and describe some representative state of the art methods, highlighting their limits and complexity.

Novel approach to study the perception of animacy in dogs.

2017

Humans tend to perceive inanimate objects as animate based on simple motion cues. So far this perceptual bias has been studied mostly in humans by utilizing two-dimensional video and interactive displays. Considering its importance for survival, the perception of animacy is probably also widespread among animals, however two-dimensional displays are not necessarily the best approach to study the phenomenon in non-human species. Here we applied a novel method to study whether dogs recognize a dependent (chasing-like) movement pattern performed by inanimate agents in live demonstration. We found that dogs showed more interest toward the agents that demonstrated the chasing-like motion, compar…

A Sociolinguistic Analysis of Educating Rita

2009

Englanninkielisissä maissa, kuten muuallakin maailmassa, yhteiskuntaluokkaerot tulevat esiin puheessa.

Camera-based measurement of relative image contrast in projection displays

2013

International audience; This research investigated the measured contrast of projection displays based on pictures taken by un-calibrated digital cameras under typical viewing conditions. A high-end radiometer was employed as a reference to the physical response of projection luminance. Checkerboard, gray scale and color complex test images with a range of the projector's brightness and contrast settings were projected. Two local and two global contrast metrics were evaluated on the acquired pictures. We used contrast surface plots and Pearson correlation to investigate the measured contrast versus the projector's brightness and contrast settings. The results suggested, as expected, the proj…

Ambient Art : Creative Information Representation

2007

Ambient art is the aesthetic presentation of information, using artistic techniques to achieve a pleasing image that also contains hidden depths, where exposure to it over time allows a viewer to understand something about the information sources that it represents. This paper reviews the artistic and computational background of ambient systems, and presents two case studies of systems developed by our research team, from their initial design to the experiences of the people encountering them. The first case presents a photo mosaic of images based on the news headlines coupled with a structured picture based on the weather; the second presents stylistic perspectives on activity in a public …

Utilizing content analysis in teaching materials for children with autism spectrum disorder

2019

It is important to look at how education materials for students with disability view disability itself. Raising the general public's awareness on autism is crucial because of the rise in the antivaxx and anti-science movements, particularly in the United States. This thesis utilizes Content Analysis to explore how a set of teaching materials for students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) understands ASD and the agency of the ASD child and creates trust with the readers. I analyze two argumentation styles to understand how those forms of argumentation create trust with the readers. This study is qualitative and relies on philosophical and cultural definitions of agency and personhood. In a…
