Role of prostaglandin E2 in the invasiveness, growth and protection of cancer cells in malignant pleuritis.

The recurrence of pleural effusions is a common event in a variety of neoplastic diseases. The objective of this study was to identify the mechanisms promoting the homing and growth of cancer cells within the pleural space. A cancer cell line recovered from malignant pleural fluids (lung adenocarcinoma cell line) that constitutively expresses cyclooxygenase 2 (COX-2) and all types of prostaglandin receptors was studied. Broad clonal heterogeneity of antigen-specific CD4+ T-cells localizing at the site of disease during tuberculosis

The repertoire of CD4+ T-lymphocytes was investigated in six patients affected by tuberculosis, who had a negative PPD skin test at diagnosis. Polyclonal CD4+ T-cell lines from the peripheral blood failed to proliferate to PPD and to the 16- or 38-kDa proteins of Mycobacterium tuberculosis, while CD4+ T-cell lines from the site of disease responded to PPD, and to the 16- and 38-kDa proteins, and derived epitopes in vitro. The repertoire of CD4+ T-cells accumulating at the site of disease was found to be widely heterogeneous as demonstrated by the finding that at least seven different peptides from the 16- and 38-kDa proteins were recognized by every patient. Cactus pear fruit extract exerts anti-inflammatory effects in carrageenin-induced rat pleurisy

Nutritional research has recently shifted from alleviating nutrient deficiencies to chronic disease prevention. In this study activity of cactus pear fruit extract (CPFE) from Opuntia ficus-indica (L.) Mill. has been investigated in carrageenin-induced pleurisy, a rat model of acute inflammation. In our experimental design rat pleurisy was achieved by the injection of 0.2 ml of λ-carrageenin in the pleural cavity.  High diagnostic accuracy, increasing clinical experience and technical improvements are good reasons to consider lung ultrasound (US) for the assessment of pleural and pulmonary diseases. Sequential release of TNFα and phospholipase A2 in a rat model of LPS-induced pleurisy

The levels of extracellular phospholipase A2(sPLA2) and TNFα, and cell accumulation were measured in the pleural washings obtained at different times following the induction ofEscherichia colilipopolysaccharide (LPS, 100 μg/cavity) pleurisy in rats. TNFα peaked at 2 hours (3036 ± 160.3 units/ml) and decreased thereafter. Conversely, levels of sPLA2peaked at 48 hours (1.97 ± 0.64 ng/ml) and were increased further (14.02 ± 4.16 ng/ml) by pretreatment with anti-TNFα antibody. Cell accumulation was not affected by antibody pretreatment. These data indicate that the sPLA2enzyme is involved in LPS-induced pleurisy.
