A modified applicative criterion of the physical model concept for evaluating plot soil erosion predictions
2015
Abstract In this paper, the physical model concept by Nearing (1998. Catena 32: 15–22) was assessed. Soil loss data collected on plots of different widths (2–8 m), lengths (11–44 m) and steepnesses (14.9–26.0%), equipped in south and central Italy, were used. Differences in width between plots of given length and steepness determined a lower data correlation and more deviation of the fitted regression line from the identity one. A coefficient of determination between measured, M , and predicted, P , soil losses of 0.77 was representative of the best-case prediction scenario, according to Nearing (1998). The relative differences, Rdiff = ( P − M ) / ( P + M ), decreased in absolute value a…
Quantum Identification of Boolean Oracles
2004
The oracle identification problem (OIP) is, given a set S of M Boolean oracles out of 2 N ones, to determine which oracle in S is the current black-box oracle. We can exploit the information that candidates of the current oracle is restricted to S. The OIP contains several concrete problems such as the original Grover search and the Bernstein-Vazirani problem. Our interest is in the quantum query complexity, for which we present several upper bounds. They are quite general and mostly optimal: (i) The query complexity of OIP is \(O(\sqrt{N {\rm log} M {\rm log} N}{\rm log log} M)\) for anyS such that M = |S| > N, which is better than the obvious bound N if M \(< 2^{N/log^3 N}\). (ii) It is \…
Tally languages accepted by alternating multitape finite automata
1997
We consider k-tape 1-way alternating finite automata (k-tape lafa). We say that an alternating automaton accepts a language L\(\subseteq\)(Σ*)k with f(n)-bounded maximal (respectively, minimal) leaf-size if arbitrary (respectively, at least one) accepting tree for any (w1, w2,..., wk) ∈ L has no more than $$f\mathop {(\max }\limits_{1 \leqslant i \leqslant k} \left| {w_i } \right|)$$ leaves. The main results of the paper are the following. If k-tape lafa accepts language L over one-letter alphabet with o(log n)-bounded maximal leaf-size or o(log log n)-bounded minimal leaf-size then the language L is semilinear. Moreover, if a language L is accepted with o(log log(n))-bounded minimal (respe…
Using Applications and Tools to Visualize ab initio Calculations Performed in VASP
2018
Visualization of the results of the ab initio calculations is important for the analysis of these results. It improves the quality of the analysis by supplementing the plain numbers received as the output of the calculations with various graphical images and facilitates the analysis of the results. In addition to that visualization helps avoiding some mistakes or inconsistencies. Various tools have been used in this work to construct the unit cell models of the calculated lattices, to check and analyze the calculated lattice structure before and after the relaxation, to plot total and difference electron charge density maps.
Tractional Motion Machines: Tangent-Managing Planar Mechanisms as Analog Computers and Educational Artifacts
2012
Concrete and virtual machines play a central role in the both Unconventional Computing (machines as computers) and in Math Education (influence of artifacts on reaching/producing abstract thought). Here we will examine some fallouts in these fields for the Tractional Motion Machines, planar mechanisms based on some devices used to plot the solutions of differential equations by the management of the tangent since the late 17th century.
Dimension Estimation in Two-Dimensional PCA
2021
We propose an automated way of determining the optimal number of low-rank components in dimension reduction of image data. The method is based on the combination of two-dimensional principal component analysis and an augmentation estimator proposed recently in the literature. Intuitively, the main idea is to combine a scree plot with information extracted from the eigenvectors of a variation matrix. Simulation studies show that the method provides accurate estimates and a demonstration with a finger data set showcases its performance in practice. peerReviewed
Perceived statistical knowledge level and self-reported statistical practice among academic psychologists
2018
Introduction: Publications arguing against the null hypothesis significance testing (NHST) procedure and in favor of good statistical practices have increased. The most frequently mentioned alternatives to NHST are effect size statistics (ES), confidence intervals (CIs), and meta-analyses. A recent survey conducted in Spain found that academic psychologists have poor knowledge about effect size statistics, confidence intervals, and graphic displays for meta-analyses, which might lead to a misinterpretation of the results. In addition, it also found that, although the use of ES is becoming generalized, the same thing is not true for CIs. Finally, academics with greater knowledge about ES sta…

The impact of COVID-19 on alternative and local food systems and the potential for the sustainability transition: Insights from 13 countries
2021
The COVID-19 pandemic has been a major stress test for the agri-food system. While most research has analysed the impact of the pandemic on mainstream food systems, this article examines how alternative and local food systems (ALFS) in 13 countries responded in the first months of the crisis. Using primary and secondary data and combining the Multi-Level Perspective with social innovation approaches, we highlight the innovations and adaptations that emerged in ALFS, and how these changes have created or supported the sustainability transition in production and consumption systems. In particular, we show how the combination of social and technological innovation, greater citizen involvement,…
La matriz de análisis de políticas con datos eficientes: evaluación de la rentabilidad del cultivo del arroz
2008
This paper combines policy analysis matrix and data envelopment analysis techniques to model the analysis of profitability from farming. Policy analysis matrices are computed for a sample of rice growers located in the wetland of the Albufera (Eastern Spain) under observed conventional and profit-efficient farming conditions. While conventional analysis points to a lack of profitability, farmers are shown to make positive profits at private and social prices when data reflecting efficiency adjustments are used in the analysis. The main conclusion is that the usefulness of the policy analysis matrix might be substantially enhanced by simulating profitability after efficiency-improving manage…
