A taxonomic revision helps to clarify differences between the Atlantic invasive
2017
Abstract Ptilohyale explorator (formerly Parhyale explorator), described by Arresti (1989), can be considered to be a synonym of west-Atlantic Ptilohyale littoralis (Stimpson, 1853), based on morphological observations of paratypes and specimens recently collected in the type locality of Ptilohyale explorator. The first collections of Ptilohyale littoralis, from the eastern Atlantic were from the port of Rotterdam (The Netherlands) in 2009 and later in Wimereux, Opal Coast (France) in 2014; however, the synonymy of Ptilohyale explorator with Ptilohyale littoralis backdates to the first European record of Ptilohyale littoralis in 1985 at La Vigne, Bay of Arcachon (France). This indicates tha…
“Buoni e cattivi esempi”. Cicerone, Cesare e l’ombra di Silla
2021
The exemplum, one of the tools of persuasion indicated by ancient rhetoric, is used by Cicero in Caesarian Orations with a careful strategy: the exemplary modeling of Caesar allows to define the boundaries of the correct management of res publica. Therefore, in the Pro Marcello Caesar is already presented as a “visible” exemplum, while in the following Pro Ligario the paradigm of Sulla (i.e. that of a dictator guided by crudelitas) becomes effective in admonishing Caesar from a possible degeneration of power.
A new species ofLimonium(Plumbaginaceae) from Soqotra (Yemen)
2009
Abstract Limonium guigliae, from the island of Soqotra (Yemen) is described. This new species, close to L. paulayanum differs from it by its size, flower morphology and ecology.
Low-Prandtl Number Natural Convection in Volumetrically Heated Rectangular Enclosures - III. Shallow Cavity, AR=0.25
2001
Abstract Natural convection in a volumetrically heated rectangular enclosure filled with a low-Prandtl number (Pr=0.0321) fluid was studied by direct numerical two-dimensional simulation. The enclosure had isothermal side walls and adiabatic top/bottom walls. The aspect ratio was 4 and the Grashof number Gr, based on conductive maximum temperature and cavity width, ranged from 3.79 × 104 to 1.26 × 109. According to the value of Gr, different flow regimes were obtained: steady-state, periodic, and chaotic. The first instability of the steady-state solution occurred at Gr≈3×105; the resulting time-periodic flow field consisted of a central rising plume and of convection rolls, periodically ge…
Evaluation of vapor mass transfer in various membrane distillation configurations: an experimental study
2011
Vapor mass transfer phenomena in four different membrane distillation (MD) configurations were examined through a self-built laboratory scale experimen- tal apparatus: Air Gap MD, Sweeping Gas MD, Vacuum Sweeping Gas MD and Vacuum MD. Vapor fluxes were measured and compared with those predicted by various models, showing that MD performance under usual processing conditions is severely controlled by the permeate side resistance to mass transfer.
Turbulences of the supersonic gas flow during cold spraying and their negative effects: A DNS CFD analysis coupled with experimental observation and …
2020
Abstract This paper investigates the phenomenological flow during cold spraying through DNS CFD analysis and experimental observations. The transient DNS computation shows that the gas flow begins to be instable inside the nozzle and generates self-sustained intermittent swirls across the nozzle exit due the shearing behavior of the flow. There is alternate swirling within the separated sheared layers on top and then on bottom of the jet, at sporadic time intervals. The swirls are not strictly periodic in nature, but they recur with an irregular frequency. The temperature field exhibits analogous variation and the thermal turbulence produces a heating confinement within the end zone of the …
Characterization of clamp-on current transformers under nonsinusoidal conditions
2009
This paper reports the performance of clamp-on current transformers under nonsinusoidal conditions. A set of experimental measurements helped to determine the ratio and the phase errors under two conditions: 1) sinusoidal excitation with frequencies from 45 to 1000 Hz and 2) nonsinusoidal excitation using the fundamental frequency and one harmonic, with adjusted phase shift. It was found that ratio and phase errors are affected by the phase angle between the harmonic and the fundamental and the harmonic amplitude. The effects of conductor location in the current transformer's window and of the air-gap width were also investigated. It was concluded that harmonic phase and ratio errors measur…
Dissimilar molecular and morphological patterns in an introgressed peripheral population of a sand dune species ( Armeria pungens , Plumbaginaceae)
2019
Introgression is a poorly understood evolutionary outcome of hybridisation because it may remain largely undetected whenever it involves the transfer of small parts of the genome from one species to another. Aiming to understand the early stages of this process, a putative case from the southernmost border of the Armeria pungens range from its congener A. macrophylla is revisited following the discovery of a subpopulation that does not show phenotypic signs of introgression and resembles typical A. pungens. We analysed morphometrics, nuclear ribosomal DNA ITS and plastid DNA (trnL‐trnF) sequences, genome size, 45S and 5S rDNA loci‐FISH data and nrDNA IGS sequences. Within the study site, mo…

Contrail formation in the tropopause region caused by emissions from an Ariane 5 rocket
2016
Rockets directly inject water vapor and aerosol into the atmosphere, which promotes the formation of ice clouds in ice supersaturated layers of the atmosphere. Enhanced mesospheric cloud occurrence has frequently been detected near 80 km altitude a few days after rocket launches. Here, we present unique evidence for cirrus formation in the tropopause region caused by ice nucleation in the exhaust plume from an Ariane 5-ECA rocket. Meteorological reanalysis data from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts show significant ice supersaturation at the 100 hPa level in the American tropical tropopause region on 26 November 2011. Near 17 km altitudes temperatures are below the Sch…
