Seawater carbonate chemistry and percentage cover of macroalgal species at three locations at Vulcano, Italy

Beneficial effects of CO2 on photosynthetic organisms will be a key driver of ecosystem change under ocean acidification. Predicting the responses of macroalgal species to ocean acidification is complex, but we demonstrate that the response of assemblages to elevated CO2 are correlated with inorganic carbon physiology. We assessed abundance patterns and a proxy for CO2:HCO3- use (delta 13C values) of macroalgae along a gradient of CO2 at a volcanic seep, and examined how shifts in species abundance at other Mediterranean seeps are related to macroalgal inorganic carbon physiology. Segnalazione per la flora siciliana di Trifolium ornithopodioides L. (Fabaceae) e revisione della sua area di distribuzione.

Trifolium ornithopodioides (L.) Sm. (Fabaceae) a new record for the Sicilian flora – T. ornithopodioides, a rare element of the Italian flora, is recorded for the first time in the territory of Palermo (Western-Sicily). The population identified, consisting of about one hundred individuals, colonizes a narrow area between the roadside and the edge of the freshwater temporary pond of Rebuttone, on acidic substratum (flysch) at 720 m a.s.l. After the examination of herbarium specimens (RO and FI) and literature, some incongruences have been found on the Italian distribution of this taxon. A distribution map including the new record, new literature data and corrections is presented.

Micromorphological approach to the systematics of Mediterranean Isoëtes species (Isoëtaceae, Lycopodiophyta): analysis of the megaspore surface

Megaspore ornamentation is one of the few morphological characters used in the taxonomy of the genus Isoëtes. In the present work, we test the application of this character for distinguishing some Isoëtes species occurring in the Mediterranean: Isoëtes sicula, which according to some authors should be included as a variety in I. histrix, and the recently described I. todaroana, whose affinity with other taxa is currently unknown. Two additional species (I. duriei, I. velata) were also included in the analysis.  Premise of the study : Atripliceae (Chenopodiaceae), including Atriplex (300 spp.) as the largest genus of the family, are an ecologically important group of steppes and semideserts worldwide. Relationships in Atripliceae are poorly understood due to obscure and potentially convergent morphological characters.  Methods : Using sequence variation of two chloroplast markers ( rbcL gene, atpB-rbcL spacer) and one nrDNA marker (ITS) analyzed with BEAST, we investigated the systematics and biogeography of Atripliceae. Isoëtes todaroana (Isoëtaceae, Lycopodiophyta), a New Species from Sicily (Italy)

2009

Isoetes todaroana, a new species from western Sicily (Italy), is described. Morpholog- ical, anatomical and ecological characters are given. The main differential characters are the presence of only two leaf air chambers, rather than four as in all other known species of the genus, and the shape of the scales, which have two lateral rounded lobes and one central spine-like lobe, together with its peculiar calcophilic habitat. So far, the species is known from a single locality.
