How to Become an Author: The Poet Isa Asp and Her Childhood Fascination with Writing for Magazines

2021

In this article the author explores the early development of the identity as a writer of a Finnish-speaking poet Lovisa (or Isa) Asp (1853–1872). She wrote her lyrics in the Finnish language in the 1870s, and she is regarded as the first 19th-century female Finnish poet (whose works were published in Finnish). She began writing poetry (initially in Swedish) as a teenager and started her literary career as a contributor to children’s magazines. Asp began her studies at the Teacher Training College in Jyväskylä in autumn 1871 with the aim of working as an elementary school teacher, but she also dreamt of becoming an established writer someday. Unfortunately, her early death meant that most of…

Remembering nature through art : Hölderlin and the poetic representation of life

2021

ABSTRACT For Friedrich Hölderlin, the mediatory role of aesthetics was central to overcoming the challenges of modern life, in particular human beings’ antagonistic relationship to nature. This article claims that Hölderlin preserves and improves what is true in Kant’s conception of the beautiful: that the experience of beauty concerns recognizing our dependence on nature, and that this recognition resonates in the works of artistic geniality as well. The article furthermore argues that the twentieth-century philosopher Theodor W. Adorno’s interpretation of Hölderlin sheds light on how Hölderlin’s late poetry constitutes a remembrance of nature that avoids fetishizing nature as an origin to…

2016

In this essay we address one of the most important poetic subgenres in the tradition of Carmelite women: the works composed for ceremonies of vestition and solemn profession in which the nuns left behind his mundane life and opened a new life as the wife of Jesus. First of all, we provide a general overview of the customs and functions of the poetry in the Discalced Carmelites, which has been already analysed in the context of the Hispanic literature, but rarely from the perspective of the Catalan area. Secondly, we present and contextualize a corpus of twenty-five unpublished compositions on vestitions and professions, copied in the manuscript of the Discalced Carmelites of Barcelona.

2011

The article takes Zachary Baqué's study of Los Angeles in the films of David Lynch as a starting point to explore David Lynch's Hollywood movies. The author contends that the films offer more than a satirical representation of a corrupt, unhealthy system which threatens dreams and artistic creativity, or a parodic play on Hollywood genre and narrative conventions. Rather, Hollywood is a character, a presence, revealed as both horizontal and vertical, physical and abstract, evoking the city, the studio system, cinema and dreams, so that the satire, the visual motifs and clichés and the topography of Hollywood, and the references to Hollywood films, constitute a complex fabric of subjectivity…

Creating images / Feigning objects. Dialogues between the artistic projects of Isidro Ferrer, Sean Mackaoui & Chema Mado

2013

[EN] As a tribute to the opening of a new exhibition space, the present text traces the common thread that links together three contemporary artists, active in the Spanish context —Chema Madoz, Sean Mackaoui and Isidro Ferrer— tightly linked all of them to visual poetry, from photography, collage and objects. Close existing connections between images and texts, according to the double direction which, on the one hand, creatively relate texts with images (hypotyposis) are also studied and, on the other hand, descriptively linked images with texts (ekphrasis). Both strategies are two fundamental ways for the explanation and interdisciplinary interpretation from the current aesthetics, referri…
