Sentence-Level Effects of Literary Genre: Behavioral and Electrophysiological Evidence
2017
The current study used event-related brain potentials (ERPs) and behavioral measures to examine effects of genre awareness on sentence processing and evaluation. We hypothesized that genre awareness modulates effects of genre-typical manipulations. We manipulated instructions between participants, either specifying a genre (poetry) or not (neutral). Sentences contained genre-typical variations of semantic congruency (congruent/incongruent) and morpho-phonological features (archaic/contemporary inflections). Offline ratings of meaningfulness (n=64/group) showed higher average ratings for semantically incongruent sentences in the poetry vs. neutral condition. ERPs during sentence reading (n=2…
Wiersze u-ciszone : prolegomena do badań nad ciszą w wierszach Juliana Kornhausera
2021
The article offers some introductory considerations on this part of Julian Kornhauser’s poetic oeuvre that comprises the texts with silence in its diverse functions: compositional, theoretical, structural, and thematic. These considerations are based on the category of muteness as found in Martin Heidegger’s late works, that is, in the sigetics project. Additionally, the author endeavours to describe the levels on which researching silence in a poem (and poems’ silence) is justified. As a result, five working perspectives are proposed: (1) thematic, (2) poetologic, (3) formal, (4) contextual, and (5) generic. They become the frames for the discussion about the significance and place of sile…

To See It All / To Hear It All: Michael Gira's Songs of Experience
2018
Between 2012 and 2016, the American experimental rock band Swans, led by the vocalist, multi-instrumentalist and visionary Michael Gira, released a monumental trilogy of albums comprising The Seer, To Be Kind, and The Glowing Man. The lyrics on all of them portray Gira’s own search for identity, with the result being a peculiar version of spirituality that is both philosophically religious and ideologically anti-religious. Forced to exist in the hostile, incomprehensible and spiritually-barren reality, the artist finds himself alienated in the state of the end of childhood and loss of innocence. In other words, he locates his identity in this final stage of spirituality and primal religion …
