Sensor Applications Of Optical Fibre Resonant Rings Based On Polarisation Sensitive Couplers

1989

Optical fibre resonant rings based on polarisation sensitive couplers give rise to a set of new resonant configurations. Two of them exhibit interesting sensor applications since small changes of the polarisation state produce large effects on the output, due to the resonant characteristics of the system. The sensor arrangements proposed have the advantage of requiring no drift compensation of the optical fibre interferometer against environmental fluctuations, since the parameters used to determine the measurand are the finesse and the visibility but not a phase change. Thus, the system can be used to sense low frequency measurands. Among the particular sensor applications that can be sugg…

Intensity-Modulated Optical Fiber Sensor for AC Magnetic Field Detection

2015

An erbium-doped (Er3+) fiber optic laser is proposed for sensing alternated magnetic fields by measuring the laser intensity modulation. The sensor is fabricated using two partially overlapped narrow-band fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) and a section of doped fiber in a Fabry–Perot configuration. Laser power stability and bandwidth are studied while changing the overlap. A bulk rod of TbDyFe, a magnetostrictive material, is glued to both the FBGs and the laser wavelength and power are modulated according to the magnetic field. Acquisition and processing are done using virtual instrumentation. Results have shown the possibility of detecting 11.18 $\mu \text{T}_{\mathrm {{rms}}}/\surd $ Hz for an…

Ultrahigh-birefringent squeezed lattice photonic crystal fiber with rotated elliptical air holes.

2010

We report an experimental realization of a highly birefringent photonic crystal fiber as a result of compressing a regular hexagonal structure. The experimental measurements estimate a group birefringence of approximately 5.5x10(-3) at 1550 nm in good agreement with the numerical results. We study the influence of compressing the regular structure at different directions and magnifications, obtaining a method to realistically enhance the phase birefringence while moderating the group birefringence.

Influence of sulphite on the passivation of iron

1991

Abstract Mossbauer spectroscopy and electrochemical measurements were used to study the passivation of iron and steels in a sulphite containing solution. The potentiodynamic curves show that passivation occurs at −140 mV potential vs saturated calomel electrode ( sce ). The main phase of the passive layer was found to be γ-FeOOH, while FeSO 4 ·H 2 O on the surface and FeSO 3 ·3H 2 O inside the layer were identified as minor phases in the case of polarization in a solution of pH 3.37. Only γ-FeOOH was observed on the surface of samples polarized at pH 6.6.

Study of Passive Films Formed on AISI 316L Stainless Steel in Non-Polluted and Underwater-Volcano-Polluted Seawater

2014

This work studies the semiconducting behavior of passive films formed on AISI 316L (UNS S31603) in two different sea-water solutions, non-polluted and polluted, collected from the volcano of El Hierro Island. Polarization measurements, potentiostatic passivation tests, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and capacitance measurements were performed. Results show that the polluted seawater worsens passivation kinetics. Additionally, passive films formed on AISI 316L stainless steel in polluted seawater have been found to be less protective than those formed in non-polluted seawater, showing a more defective structure, owing to the acidity of the polluted medium.

Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy for studying passive layers on steel rebars immersed in alkaline solutions simulating concrete pores

2007

Present paper deals with the use of the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy to identify different processes in the passive layer growth over steel rebar surface immersed in an alkaline media simulating the concrete pore solution. Two cases have been considered: a passive layer spontaneously grown in a high alkaline media and a passive layer assisted by the application of an anodic potential in the same media. The application of electric equivalent circuits allows distinguishing between the different mechanisms occurring in this passive layer when grows in different conditions. An electric equivalent circuit with two RC loops connected in parallel is often used for fitting the EIS diagram…

Electrochemically-induced TiO2 incorporation for enhancing corrosion and tribocorrosion resistance of PEO coating on 7075 Al alloy

2018

Abstract 7075 Al alloy was PEO-treated in a silicate based electrolyte containing 3 g l-1 potassium titanyl oxalate using unipolar and bipolar pulsed current waveforms. The coating formed by the bipolar waveform with the wider cathodic pulses showed volcano-like surface morphology with no evidence of large pores at the metal/coating interface. It revealed the highest corrosion performance due to the synergistic effect of TiO2 incorporation and structural/morphological features along with a better passivation behavior indicating no pitting susceptibility. For this coating, the tribocorrosion tests showed no potential drop during sliding under 1 N with the lowest volume loss of 0.022 mm3.

Investigation on passivity of titanium under steady-state conditions in acidic solutions

2011

Abstract The passivity of titanium was studied using potentiostatic polarization combined with Mott–Schottky analysis in acidic solutions. The oxide layer was characterized as an n-type semiconducting, oxygen deficient oxide (TiO1.993–1.996) with a donor density in the range of 1019–1020 cm−3 depending on electrode potential and electrolyte pH. The calculated thickness for the inner oxide layer was in the range of 1–4 nm, increasing linearly with applied potential and exponentially with electrolyte pH. The potential- and pH-dependence of the inner oxide thickness was interpreted by a modified point defect model for the migration-controlled oxide growth, in which the rate-determining step in…

Influence of Compressive Stress on Dielectric and Ferroelectric Properties of the(Na0.5Bi0.5)0.7Sr0.3TiO3Ceramics

2013

Good quality lead-free ceramics of (Na0.5Bi0.5)0.7Sr0.3TiO3(NBTS30) have been produced by a solid phase sintering process. The dependence of dielectric and ferroelectric properties on the unaxial pressure (0–1200 bar) were investigated. A shift and decrease of maximum value of e, decrease of the thermal hysteresis and coercive field and increase of polarization with increasing pressure were observed. The results were discussed in terms of an elastic changes in inter-ionic distances in a crystal structure and switching nanoregions under the action of pressure. The NBTS30 ceramic is expected to be a new promising candidate for lead-free electronic material.

Direct observation of half-metallicity in the Heusler compound $Co_{2}MnSi$

2014

Ferromagnetic thin films of Heusler compounds are highly relevant for spintronic applications owing to their predicted half-metallicity, that is, 100% spin polarization at the Fermi energy. However, experimental evidence for this property is scarce. Here we investigate epitaxial thin films of the compound Co2MnSi in situ by ultraviolet-photoemission spectroscopy, taking advantage of a novel multi-channel spin filter. By this surface sensitive method, an exceptionally large spin polarization of () % at room temperature is observed directly. As a more bulk sensitive method, additional ex situ spin-integrated high energy X-ray photoemission spectroscopy experiments are performed. All experimen…
