Differentiated Integration and Disintegration in the EU after Brexit : Risks versus Opportunities
2019
Differentiation is becoming an increasingly salient feature of European integration. The multi‐faceted European crisis and the subsequent Brexit vote (paving the way for a ground‐breaking case of differentiated disintegration) have led scholars and practitioners to think about the consequences of differentiated integration. This article draws on five well‐established models of differentiation experienced by countries both inside and outside the Union: the EEA model; the Danish model of (quasi‐)permanent differentiation; the Swedish model of de facto differentiation; the instrumental model; and the British model of differentiated disintegration. It addresses the different risks and opportuni…
Future of e-Government: An integrated conceptual framework
2021
Abstract The information and hyper-connectivity revolutions have caused significant disruptions in citizens’ interactions with governments all over the world. In this study, we present an overarching and integrated conceptual framework of e-government grounded in robust qualitative research to describe the factors that must be integrated to implement e-government successfully. Drawing insights from 168 in-depth interviews conducted with multiple stakeholders in India, this study defines e-government as a multidimensional construct with customer orient…

Recalibrating EU Foreign Policy vis-à-vis Central Asia: Towards Principled Pragmatism and Resilience
2022
With China and Russia acting more assertively vis-à-vis Central Asia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan have gradually moved to the core of contemporary Eurasian geopolitics – albeit to varying degrees. The European Union (EU) has purposefully sought to promote its norms and values in the region for quite some time in the past. However, considering the ongoing Western “polycrisis” exacerbated by the Covid-19 pandemic most recently, our paper investigates how the EU has been recalibrating its relationship towards Central Asia – within the timespan of its two EU Central Asia Strategies, dating from 2007 and 2019, respectively. We argue that the reformulation of …

The emergence of supranationalism and intergovernmentalism in European defence cooperation : the role of PESCO and its Secretariat
2020
Master's thesis in Political science and management (ME502) For a long time, theEuropean Union’s(EU) member states have meticulously ring-fenced defence cooperation vis-à-vis the potential intrusion of supranationalism. Thus, defence cooperation has been conceived as perhaps the most central part of core state powers in Europe. Has this changed since member states have agreed to establish the so-called Permanent Structured Cooperation (PESCO) in 2017? Cleary, PESCO has developed bothas a more structuredand legally ‘binding’cooperation in defence mattersamongst participating member states, such as defence procurement, training and capability development.Yet, the jury is out for as to whether …
