Given that, nowadays, 40% of the US corn crop is used for biofuel production, there is a growing concern that the rise in biofuel production might lead to an increase in food prices. However, it is also obvious that significant growth in biofuel use has minimized the demand for fossil fuel and has hence reduced the volume of carbon emissions. It is therefore crucial to model corn market volatility precisely because such an estimate could play a vital role in stabilizing food and biofuel market prices. AbstractMacroalgae-based products are increasing in demand also in Europe. In the European Union, each category of macroalgae-based products is regulated separately. We discuss EU legislation, including the law on medicinal products, foods including food supplements and food additives, feed and feed additives, cosmetics, packaging materials, fertilizers and biostimulants, as well as biofuels. Product safety and consumer protection are the priorities with any new products. Macroalgae products can be sold as traditional herbal medicines. The novel food regulation applies to macroalgae foods that have not previously been used as food, and organic macroalgae are a specific regulatory category. …

Pro gradu-tutkielmassa kartoitetaan, millaisia alkoholirikoksia Mikkelin seudulla tehtiin ja miksi, kuten myös miten näitä rikoksia kontrolloitiin ja valvottiin vuosina 1895–1905. Tarkemmiksi tutkimuskohteiksi on rajattu kolme eniten oikeuksissa näkynyttä rikosta: viinan salapolttaminen, laiton myyminen sekä juopuminen julkisella alueella. Pääasiallisina lähteinä tutkimuksessa on käytetty rikoshistoriassa keskeisiä oikeusistuinten pöytäkirjoja sekä näiden tukena aikalaissanomalehtiä. Edellä mainituista kolmesta rikoksesta oli tutkimusajanjakson aikana syytettynä yhteensä 338 henkilöä. Suurin osa syytetyistä oli miehiä. Historical research into the nuclear industry has focussed upon military and commercial aspects of the technology whilst ignoring fuel. This article discusses nuclear fuel, the resource at the centre of the industry and the role superpower politics played in its supply. Starting with the context of superpower competition, we examine the spread of nuclear technology from its beginnings in post-war Britain via West Germany in the 1950s to Finland in the 1960s and 1970s. Landowners are the key players in bioenergy production on wasteland; such as cutaway peatlands. In this study, the landowner's interest to use cutaway peatlands for bioenergy production was investigated using a survey and GIS (Geographic Information Systems) methods in an area in South Ostrobothnia, Finland. The focus was to identify which different bioenergy production chains are preferred by the respondents: combustion, gasification or biogas production from agriculture, energy-willow short-rotation forestry or forestry based energy crops. Small-scale wood combustion is a significant source of particulate emissions. Atmospheric transformation of wood combustion emissions is a complex process involving multiple compounds interacting simultaneously. Thus, an advanced methodology is needed to study the process in order to gain a deeper understanding of the emissions. Tutkielma käsittelee salaviinarinkien toimintaympäristöjä vuosien 1770–1787 Helsingissä. Aikakautta määritti Kustaa III:n ailahtelevainen alkoholipolitiikka (1772–1787), jonka vuoksi arkinen viinanpoltto muuttui laittomaksi toiminnaksi. Samalla kriminalisoitiin muun muassa laittomasti poltetun viinan hallussapito ja myynti. Lisäksi alkoholinkäyttöä rajoittivat vanhemmat lait, jotka tähtäsivät ylenjuonnin aiheuttamien järjestyshäiriöiden siistimiseen pois julkisesta tilasta. Varhaismodernilla ajalla alkoholin käyttö oli runsasta ja kuului kiinteänä osana arkeen sekä juhlaan.
