The role of age and life course stage in digital consumption

2018

Digital technologies are an inherent part of consumer environments today. This dissertation investigates older adults’ usage of digital technologies by focusing on the role of age and life course stage in digital consumption in Finland. The dissertation applies theories of technology adoption and use, generations, and life course to examine older adults as digital consumers, the interrelationship between consumption and digital technologies and the effects of age and life course stage on digital consumption. The study utilises both quantitative and qualitative data from five (5) data sets. The results reveal that between the years 1999 and 2014, older adults reported more ecological and les…

Mikä selittää eläkeiän nostohalukkuutta? : analyysi työssäkäyvien mielipiteistä EU27-alueella

2016

Tämän tutkimuksen tarkoitus on selvittää, mitkä tekijät selittävät eläkeiän nostohalukkuutta. Eläkeiän nosto on nähty monissa aiemmissa tutkimuksissa välttämättömäksi keinoksi vastata väestön ikääntymisen mukanaan tuomiin haasteisiin.

Sagittal Plane Hip, Knee, and Ankle Biomechanics and the Risk of Anterior Cruciate Ligament Injury: A Prospective Study

2018

Background: Stiff landings with less knee flexion and high vertical ground-reaction forces have been shown to be associated with an increased risk of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury. The literature on the association between other sagittal plane measures and the risk of ACL injuries with a prospective study design is lacking. Purpose: To investigate the relationship between selected sagittal plane hip, knee, and ankle biomechanics and the risk of ACL injury in young female team-sport athletes. Study Design: Case-control study; Level of evidence, 3. Methods: A total of 171 female basketball and floorball athletes (age range, 12-21 years) participated in a vertical drop jump test usin…

"I use it correctly!": The use of ICTs among Italian grandmothers in a generational perspective

2018

In this project, we investigated the role played by digital media and information and communication technologies (ICTs) in building intergenerational and intragenerational relations for grandparents. Specifically, we investigated the possible relationships between grandmothers, children, and grandchildren, with the aim of understanding the dynamics of intergenerational exchanges and how grandmothers experience the use of the Internet as a tool to facilitate communication with family members. The research shows that the reflections regarding the role of the Internet among elderly people are often linked to a generational identity and generational belonging and involve constant comparison wit…

Technicolor and new matter generations

2010

This work consists of an overview part and three research papers. The subject of this work is a class of models for dynamical electroweak symmetry breaking, and new generations of fermionic matter. An introductory overview of the standard model of electroweak interactions is given, as well as an overview of some of the recent developments in the field of walking technicolor models. We study some recently proposed models for dynamical electroweak symmetry breaking, namely the minimal walking technicolor (MWT) and next to minimal walking technicolor (NMWT) model. We show that, as a result of cancellation of the global and gauge anomalies associated with the technicolor sector, a non sequentia…

Knee joint loading in the open and square stance tennis forehands

2013

Sandamas, Paul 2013. Knee joint loading in the open and square stance tennis forehands. Department of Biology of Physical Activity, University of Jyväskylä. Master's Thesis in Biomechanics. 80 pages. The aim of this study was to calculate and compare the resultant forces and moments in the knee joint of the open and square stance tennis forehands. An additional aim was to incorporate the ground reaction forces to shed light on the role of the lower body in aiding pelvic rotation in these two different forehands. The two types of forehand strokes hit by 7 right-handed university team level tennis players were filmed and the ground reaction forces on each foot were measured simultaneously. A …

We are “not” too (young/old) to collaborate : Prominent Key Barriers to Intergenerational Innovation

2019

In this study, we analyzed the barriers to technology-supported intergenerational innovation to understand better how young and old can collaborate towards global innovations. Researchers in different disciplines have already identified various barriers to intergenerational collaboration. However, barriers are changing depending on the context of collaboration, and difficulties still exist to support intergenerational innovation in global settings. Therefore, we investigated the barriers that emerge when people work with someone decades older or younger. The results of our study have shown what barriers are influenced by age, what barriers exist only for senior and younger adults. The study…

Sukupolvet videopelien turnajaisissa : e-urheilun markkinoiden ikärakenne

2020

Digital gaming attracts people of all ages. Nevertheless, professional esports (also known as electronic sports, e-sports, or eSports) is dominated by under 35 year olds. In this paper, e-sports market is analysed by focusing on the performance of different age-groups. Younger generations play more digital games and dominate e-sports scene, but also older people enjoy playing various video games. Two separate datasets are analysed for testing whether age is a statistically significant explanatory variable for success in professional e-sports tournaments. According to the empirical results, success in e-sports tournaments decreases with the player’s age. The best results are gained when the …
