Important species differences have been reported concerning the induction properties of rifampicin towards enzymes of the P-450 superfamily. Mice, rabbits and humans are far more responsive than rats and guinea pigs. In the present study a strong induction of cytochrome P-450 3A-dependent enzyme activities was observed in female rat liver microsomes after high dose treatment (> or = 250 mg/kg/day for 9 days) with rifampicin, resulting in an up to 30-fold enhanced hydroxylation rate of testosterone in the 2 beta-, 6 beta- and 15 beta-position in vitro. In Gabon, terrestrial mammals of protected areas have been identified as a possible source of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Some studies on antibiotic resistance in bats have already been carried out. The main goal of our study was to detect extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBLs) that are produced by enterobacteria from bats in the Makokou region in Gabon. Sixty-eight fecal samples were obtained from 68 bats caught in the forests located 1 km from the little town of Makokou. Microcystins, as secondary metabolite of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) and cyclic heptapeptide cyanotoxin, are one of the main marine toxins in continental aquatic ecosystems. Maps showing the mean concentration of sulfar and chlorine in air and precipitation over north western Europe in summer and winter have been constructed. Exess SO4—S has been computed on the basis of the assumption that chloride is a conservative property of sea spray particles and that there are no other sources for chloride than sea spray. Monoester copillar[5]arenes: synthesis, unusual self-inclusion behavior, and molecular recognition.

The self-inclusion behavior of monoester copillar[5]arenes depends on the position of the ester group, which causes different guest selectivities. Monoester copillar[5]arenes bearing an acetate chain can form stable self-inclusion complexes in low- and high-concentration solution and exhibit high guest selectivity. However, a monoester copillar[5]arene bearing a butyrate chain can not form a self-inclusion complex and exhibits low guest selectivity. Thus, a new class of stable self-inclusion complexes of copillar[5]arenes was explored to improve the selectivity of molecular recognition.

Herein, we report the syntheses of $\pi$extended [7]helicene $4$ and $\pi$-extended [9]helicene $6$ through regioselective cyclodehydrogenation in high yields, where a "prefusion" strategy plays a key role in preventing undesirable aryl rearrangements.
