Liquid Crystalline Ordering and Charge Transport in Semiconducting Materials
2009
Organic semiconducting materials offer the advantage of solution processability into flexible films. In most cases, their drawback is based on their low charge carrier mobility, which is directly related to the packing of the molecules both on local (amorphous versus crystalline) and on macroscopic (grain boundaries) length scales. Liquid crystalline ordering offers the possibility of circumventing this problem. An advanced concept comprises: i) the application of materials with different liquid crystalline phases, ii) the orientation of a low viscosity high temperature phase, and, iii) the transfer of the macroscopic orientation during cooling to a highly ordered (at best, crystalline-like…
Excitation Energy Transfer in Organic Materials: From Fundamentals to Optoelectronic Devices
2009
In this review, we discuss investigations of electronic excitation energy transfer in conjugated organic materials at the bulk and single molecule level and applications of energy transfer in fluorescent and phosphorescent organic light emitting devices. A brief overview of common descriptions of energy transfer mechanisms is given followed by a discussion of some basic photophysics of conjugated materials including the generation of excited states and their subsequent decay through various channels. In particular, various examples of bimolecular excited state annihilation processes are presented. Energy transfer studies at the single molecule level provide a new tool to study electronic co…
Effects of functionalized carbon nanotubes in peroxide crosslinking of diene elastomers
2009
Abstract The crosslinking reaction of ethylene–propylene–diene terpolymer (EPDM) peroxide vulcanization filled with pristine and functionalized carbon nanotubes (CNTs and S/CNTs) was evaluated by rheometric tests. The functionalization of CNTs was carried out by diazonium salt methodology in acid medium. S/CNTs were characterised by means of TGA, EDX, Raman and elemental analysis. Pristine CNTs were found to gradually increase the delta torque as a function of loading fraction. Nevertheless, the vulcanization time, scorch and optimum cure time hardly varied on addition of CNTs. However, S/CNTs noticeably affected the cure process, reducing the vulcanization time and delta torque. This effec…
Stabilisation of LDPE cross-linked in the presence of peroxidesII. FTIR study of chemical changes taking place in the LDPE–dicumyl peroxide–Irganox 1…
2000
Abstract The chemical changes taking place in the systems: LDPE–Irganox 1081, LDPE–dicumyl peroxide and LDPE–Irganox 1081–dicumyl peroxide, after homogenisation (in a rolling mill at 130°C) and after homogenisation and cross-linking (at 180°C and 5.0 MPa for 20 min) were investigated by FTIR. It was found that the OH groups in Irganox 1081 were in a bound form, and were most probably linked to the sulphur co-ordination centre. Further, the presence of dicumyl peroxide without Irganox 1081 in LDPE resulted in the formation of hydroperoxide groups at a temperature of 130°C, which were replaced by free hydroxy and carbonyl groups of a ketonic type after cross-linking. Simultaneous addition of …
Generation of white LED light by frequency downconversion using a perylene-based dye
2012
A high efficiency white light emitting diode (LED) was fabricated by generation of frequency down-conversion from a GaN/InGaN blue LED. In place of conventional inorganic phosphors, a perylene-based dye was used for colour conversion. The resulting hybrid structure is analysed by focusing on the visual performance of the realised LEDs employing the most relevant photometric parameters of a light source. Preparation of the organic polymer is described as well. The thermal stability of the dye was investigated and a simple structure which avoids colour degradation is proposed.

Photo-stabilization of biopolymers-based nanocomposites with UV-modified layered silicates
2020
Abstract Eco-friendly in-situ stabilised biopolymer nanocomposites based on polyamide 11 (PA11) and polylactic acid (PLA) were prepared by melt mixing in the presence of a modified organo-montmorillonite clay containing a chemically-bound hindered amine UV-stabilising function, [(UV)OM-MMt]. Characterisation of the newly synthesised organo-modifier containing the reactive hindered amine (HAS) UV-stabilising function [(UV)OM] has confirmed a successful synthesis. The (UV)OM was then introduced into NaMMt through ion exchange reaction to prepare the UV stabiliser-bound organo-modified-MMt, [(UV)OM-MMt]. The in-situ stabilised PA11- and PLA- nanocomposites (PA11-(UV)OM-MMt and PLA-(UV)OM-MMt) …
Changes in Cardiac Proteome and Metabolome Following Exposure to the Pahs Retene and Fluoranthene and Their Mixture in Developing Rainbow Trout Alevi…
2022
Exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) is known to affect developing organisms. Utilization of different omics-based technologies and approaches could therefore provide a base for the discovery of novel mechanisms of PAH induced development of toxicity. To this aim, we investigated how exposure towards two PAHs with different toxicity mechanisms: retene (an aryl hydrocarbon receptor 2 (Ahr2) agonist), and fluoranthene (a weak Ahr2 agonist and cytochrome P450 inhibitor (Cyp1a)), either alone or as a mixture, affected the cardiac proteome and metabolome in newly hatched rainbow trout alevins (Oncorhynchus mykiss). In total, we identified 65 and 82 differently expressed proteins (…
Rheological characterization of chitosan matrices: Influence of biopolymer concentration
2007
Viscoelastic properties of chitosan (CH), chitosan-poly(ethylene glycol) 400 (CH-PEG), and chitosan-poly(ethylene glycol) 400 with glyoxal as crosslinking agent (CH-PEG-Gly) systems were studied to analyze the effect of chitosan concentration (from 0.83 to 1.67%). Dynamic moduli increase as chitosan concentration increases for all systems. For CH and CH-PEG systems the loss modulus (G″) is greater than the storage modulus (G′) with predominance of the viscous over the elastic behavior. This corresponds to the characteristic behavior of solutions (nonstructured systems). The presence of PEG 400 induces a complementary reinforcement of the mechanical properties of the system. Except for the l…
Preparation of pH sensitive poly(vinilydenefluoride) porous membranes by grafting of acrylic acid assisted by supercritical carbon dioxide
2012
Free radical grafting of acrylic acid (AA) on poly(vinilydenefluoride) (PVDF) porous membranes was studied at 65°C using supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO 2) as a solvent and delivery agent. The process was initiated by the thermal decomposition of benzoylperoxide (BPO). Spectroscopic analyses confirmed the presence of poly(AA) chains linked to treated membranes. The mass fraction of grafted AA increased with grafting time and BPO concentration while it decreased when the density of the fluid phase was enhanced. A not-monotonic trend was obtained when the effect of the initial AA concentration was studied. The grafting process was accompanied by a reduction of the crystallinity of the PVDF…
