Ethylene oxide was polymerized with potassium 4-(phenylazo)benzylalcoholate (1f). The purified and fractionated products were acylated. The ultra-violet measurement of the e…

Poly(THF-co-cyano ethylene oxide): Cyano Ethylene Oxide (CEO) Copolymerization with THF Leading to Multifunctional and Water-Soluble PolyTHF Polyelec…

2016

Cyano-functional polyether copolymers based on THF were prepared via cationic ring-opening copolymerization of THF with cyano ethylene oxide (CEO). The CEO content of poly(tetrahydrofuran) (polyTHF) based copolymers varied from 3.3 to 29.3%, and molecular weights ranged from 5100 to 31900 g·mol–1 with Mw/Mn in the range of 1.31 to 1.74 (SEC in THF, PS standards). The polymerization was conducted with methyl trifluoromethanesulfonate (MeOTf) as an initiator. Kinetic studies concerning incorporation of both monomers were performed via NMR spectroscopy. The cyano groups at the poly(THF-co-CEO) copolymers enable direct access to amino (polyTHF–NH2) and carboxyl groups (polyTHF–COOH) in facile o…

Synthesis and properties of amphiphilic “dumbbell”-shaped grafted block copolymers, 1. Anionic synthesis via a polyfunctional initiator

1994

Two poly(ethylene oxide) stars linked by a long polystyrene chain represent a novel amphiphilic architecture (dumbbell), which is available by anionic grafting of ethylene oxide from a hydroxylated polybutadiene-block-polystyrene-block-polybutadiene triblock copolymer. The short butadiene end-blocks (DPB = 36) of a BSB triblock copolymer with a long styrene middle block (DPS = 650) was first modified by hydroboration and oxidation. A multifunctional alkoxide initiator is thus prepared by titration of the hydroxyl groups of the “polybutadiene” end-block with cumylpotassium. Gelation and precipitation of the polyfunctional initiator in THF could be avoided by complexing the cation (K+) with a…

Multiarm Polycarbonate Star Polymers with a Hyperbranched Polyether Core from CO2 and Common Epoxides

2017

Multiarm star copolymers, consisting of hyperbranched poly(ethylene oxide) (hbPEO) or poly(butylene oxide) (hbPBO) polyether copolymers with glycerol branching points as a core, and linear aliphatic polycarbonate arms generated from carbon dioxide (CO2) and epoxide monomers, were synthesized via a “core-first” approach in two steps. First, hyperbranched polyether polyols were prepared by anionic copolymerization of ethylene oxide or 1,2-butylene oxide with 8–35% glycidol with molecular weights between 800 and 389,000 g·mol–1. Second, multiple arms were grown via immortal copolymerization of CO2 with propylene oxide or 1,2-butylene oxide using the polyether polyols as macroinitiators and (R,…

Copolymerization Kinetics of Glycidol and Ethylene Oxide, Propylene Oxide, and 1,2-Butylene Oxide: From Hyperbranched to Multiarm Star Topology

2016

Copolymerization of established epoxide monomers with glycidol (G) is a key reaction to prepare branched or hyperbranched polyethers. The kinetics of the multibranching anionic ring-opening copolymerization of glycidol (a cyclic latent AB2 monomer) with ethylene oxide (EO), propylene oxide (PO), and 1,2-butylene oxide (BO; cyclic latent AB monomers), respectively, in dimethyl sulfoxide was studied. Online 1H NMR spectroscopy was employed for in situ monitoring of the individual monomer consumption during the entire course of the statistical copolymerization. Varying the counterion, both the cesium alkoxide and potassium alkoxide initiated copolymerization were studied and compared. From the…

Production and physicochemical characterization of a new amine derivative of gellan gum and rheological study of derived hydrogels

2020

The production of an amine derivative of gellan gum, named GG-EDA, was here obtained by functionalizing the polysaccharide backbone with pendant ethylenediamine moieties. The obtained derivative was characterized by spectroscopic, colorimetric, chromatographic and rheological analyses to study the effect of the free amino groups on the physicochemical properties of the macromolecule. A titration experiment was conducted to study the acid-base dissociation constants in aqueous media for the carboxylic and amino groups in the GG-EDA and to shed light on the possibility that the derivative shows a polyampholyte structure under physiological conditions. The rheological analysis conducted on bot…

Sulfur’s role in the flame retardancy of thio-ether–linked hyperbranched polyphosphoesters in epoxy resins

2020

Abstract Hyperbranched polyphosphoesters are promising multifunctional flame retardants for epoxy resins. These polymers were prepared via thiol-ene polyaddition reactions. While key chemical transformations and modes of actions were elucidated, the role of sulfur in the chemical composition remains an open question. In this study, the FR-performance of a series of phosphorus-based flame retardant additives with and without sulfur (thio-ethers or sulfones) in their structure are compared. The successful synthesis of thio-ether or sulfone-containing variants is described and verified by 1H and 31P NMR, also FTIR and MALDI-TOF. A decomposition process is proposed from pyrolytic evolved gas an…

Partially Quarternized Amino Functional Poly(methacrylate) Terpolymers: Versatile Drug Permeability Modifiers

2011

Partially quarternized poly(methacrylate) terpolymers (Q-BBMCs) have been synthesized, based on the basic butylated methacrylate copolymer (BBMC/EUDRAGIT E), an excipient approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and to date mainly applied for tablet coatings. Via straightforward polymer modification reactions, a series of Q-BBMCs with quarternization degrees of 22%, 42%, and 65% has been prepared. Apical to basolateral transport across Caco-2 cell monolayers was investigated, employing the paracellular transported compounds trospium and mannitol. At pH 6.5 quarternization resulted in increased permeation enhancement up to 2.8-fold compared to BBMC, that is, up to 7.3-fold compared…

Dynamic Density Functional Theories for Inhomogeneous Polymer Systems Compared to Brownian Dynamics Simulations

2017

Dynamic density functionals (DDFs) are popular tools for studying the dynamical evolution of inhomogeneous polymer systems. Here, we present a systematic evaluation of a set of diffusive DDF theories by comparing their predictions with data from particle-based Brownian dynamics (BD) simulations for two selected problems: Interface broadening in compressible A/B homopolymer blends after a sudden change of the incompatibility parameter, and microphase separation in compressible A:B diblock copolymer melts. Specifically, we examine (i) a local dynamics model, where monomers are taken to move independently from each other, (ii) a nonlocal "chain dynamics" model, where monomers move jointly with…
