POSS Grafting on Polyethylene and Maleic Anhydride-Grafted Polyethylene by One-Step Reactive Melt Mixing

2018

This study reports the one-step reactive melt mixing preparation of organic-inorganic hybrid based on maleic anhydride-grafted polyethylene and 3-(2-aminoethyl)aminopropyl-heptaisobutyl substituted polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane, (NPOSS), as well as on low-density polyethylene and allyl-heptaisobutyl-POSS (1POSS) in dicumyl peroxide presence, which is believed to activate the unsaturation of the reactive functional group of POSS itself. The successful grafting of POSS molecules onto polymeric backbones was probed through rheological and spectroscopic analysis. Grafting of POSS molecules enhances their dispersion in the polymeric matrix as shown by morphological analysis. Moreover, the…

Influence of a density mismatch on TMPTMA shells nonconcentricity

2011

Some laser target designs require low-density organic foam shells to study fusion on the French high-power laser laser mega joule. Low-density trimethylolpropane trimethacrylate foam shells composed of C, H, and O, 2 mm diameter, 100-μm wall thickness, and 250 mg cm−3 density are synthesized by a microencapsulation technique using a droplet generator. These shells have to reach a sphericity higher than 99.9% and a nonconcentricity (NC) lower than 1%. The wall thickness variation is one of the most difficult specifications to meet. An important factor in reducing this defect is the density matching between the three phases of the emulsion at polymerization temperature. The influence of a den…

The role of the hydrophobic force in bilayer adhesion and fusion

1991

The Surface Forces Apparatus technique was used for measuring the adhesion, deformation, and fusion of bilayers supported on mica. The technique allows the molecular rearrangements to be followed in real time during the fusion process, and the most important forces involved to be identified. The adhesion between two bilayers can be increased by two orders of magnitude if they are thinned so as to expose more hydrophobic groups. For all the bilayer systems studied a single basic fusion mechanism was found in which the bilayers do not “overcome” the short-range repulsive steric-hydration forces; instead, local bilayer deformations allow these repulsive forces to be “bypassed”. The results fur…

Positronium as a probe in natural polymers: decomposition in starch

2009

Ortho-positronium (o-Ps) is used as a probe in positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS) experiments, to characterise the behaviour of free volumes in natural starch samples, as a function of temperature (T). Up to about 540 K, the o-Ps intensity, I(3), remains constant at 26.2% while its lifetime, tau(3), is found to increase linearly. Both parameters undergo a decrease above this T, due to the onset of decomposition, which results in a shrinking of the sample pellets. The results indicate that the glass transition temperature should be above 501 K. Data from thermal gravimetry analysis (TGA) measurements are well described by supposing a first order process for the survival proba…

MRI-Visible Poly(ε-caprolactone) with Controlled Contrast Agent Ratios for Enhanced Visualization in Temporary Imaging Applications

2013

International audience; Hydrophobic macromolecular contrast agents (MMCAs) are highly desirable to provide safe and efficient magnetic resonance (MR) visibility to implantable medical devices. In this study, we report on the synthesis and evaluation of novel biodegradable poly(ε-caprolactone)-based MMCAs. Poly(α-propargyl-ε-caprolactone-co-ε-caprolactone)s containing 2, 5, and 10 mol % of propargyl groups have been prepared by ring-opening copolymerization of ε-caprolactone and the corresponding propargylated lactone. In parallel, a diazido derivative of the clinically used diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA)/Gd3+ complex has been synthesized. Finally, MRI-visible poly(ε-caprolactone)…

Novel polyaminoacidic copolymers as nonviral gene vectors

2000

Human gene therapy is one of the most promising methods developed in recent years, providing great potential for the treatment of a variety of diseases. Complexes formed between DNA and cationic polymers are attracting increasing attention as novel synthetic vectors for the delivery of genes. We have synthesized polycations with quaternary ammonium groups in their side chains for self-assembly with calf thymus DNA. This paper describes the functionalization of α,β-polyasparthydrazide (PAHy), a synthetic macromolecule having many potential applications in the field of biomedical sciences, with glycidyltrimethylammonuim chloride (GTA) in order to introduce positive charges into their chains. …

Synthese und Eigenschaften molekulareinheitlicher n-Paraffine bis zum C140H282

1972
