Acute myocardial infarction (AMI) in young adult presents a typical pattern of risk factors, clinical, angiographic and prognostic characteristics. In the last years we demonstrated that hemorheological profile is altered in these patients in a persistent way and independently of the number of risk factors and of the extent of coronary lesions. Thus, the hyperviscosity syndrome following AMI could be considered an intrinsic characteristic of these patients. Consequently it is possible to hypothesise the presence of a genetic background at the origin of this predisposition. Conformational polymorphism and amphiphilic properties of resorcinarene octapodands

o-Nitroaniline functionalized resorcinarene octapodands 1-5 with pendant methyl, ethyl, pentyl, nonyl or 1-decenyl groups, respectively, were synthesized and their structural properties investigated using X-ray crystallography and NMR spectroscopy. The upper rim of each podand is identical containing flexible side arms, in which rotation around the -OCH(2)CH(2)N- linkers create excellent possibilities for polymorphism. Two conformational polymorphs of acetone solvate of 2 were identified containing different side arm orientation and crystal packing. Bacterial communities in Arctic fjelds of Finnish Lapland are stable but highly pH-dependent

The seasonal and spatial variations of microbial communities in Arctic fjelds of Finnish Lapland were studied. Phospholipid fatty acid analysis (PLFA) and terminal restriction fragment analysis (T-RFLP) of amplified 16S rRNA genes were used to assess the effect of soil conditions and vegetation on microbial community structures along different altitudes of two fjelds, Saana and Jehkas. Terminal restriction fragments were additionally analysed from c . 160 cloned sequences and isolated bacterial strains and matched with those of soil DNA samples. Two model substances were used in the study – 2,6-dimethoxybenzoic acid (2,6MeOBA) and 3-hydroxybenzoic acid (3OHBA), each having two polymorphic forms, including a form without carboxylic acid homodimers in their crystal structure. For each polymorph 2-3 largest crystal faces were selected for MD simulations and the crystal was cut along these planes by preparing simulation box with these planes facing towards solution. Effects of pressure and of thermal history on the structural phase transition of KCN

The cubic-noncubic structural phase transition of a KCN single crystal is studied as a function of thermal history and of hydrostatic pressure up to 2 kbar. The standard sequence of phases is cubic-monoclinic-orthorhombic on cooling and orthorhombic-cubic on heating. The monoclinic phase is also absent in first cooling runs at low pressures (p≦250 bar). The width of the monoclinic field inp, T phase diagram is increased in second cooling runs. The effects are discussed in terms of a martensitic transformation behavior and random strain fields.

Beneath this structural speciality, their broad LC-phases and their polymorphism (different smectic phases and one nematic phase as a function of temperature) make them interesting. Abstract In this work we demonstrate the remarkable phase control on the crystallization of calcium carbonate by the stereochemistry of carbohydrate-based polymers. The polymers (poly(2-(2,3,4,6-tetra-O-acetyl-β- d -glucosyloxy)ethyl methacrylate) and poly(2-(2,3,4,6-tetra-O-acetyl-β- d -galactosyloxy)ethyl methacrylate)) have been synthesized from the respective glucose or galactose containing monomers (3 step synthesis) by RAFT polymerization leading to well-defined carbohydrate-based polymers with number averages of the molecular weights (Mw) of 10,000–18,000 g/mol and a dispersities (Đ) from 1.1 to 1.2. Phases and phase transitions of (NaCl)1?x(NaCN)x

(NaCl)1−x(NaCN)x mixed crystals with CN-concentrationsx of 0.87, 0.76, 0.71 and 0.65 have been investigated by X-ray powder diffraction. Apart from the cubic room temperature phase, a rhombohedral and an orthorhombic phase have been identified. In addition a glass state has been observed which is characterized by a strong broadening of the cubic powder lines. The phase diagram shows a wide coexistence gap between the non-cubic phases and the glass state.
