Quantification of poisons for Ziegler Natta catalysts and effects on the production of polypropylene by gas chromatographic with simultaneous detecti…
2020
[EN] This article describes a new simultaneous method for the analysis of sulfur-type poisons, hydrocarbons and permanent gases affecting the productivity of the Ziegler Natta catalyst during the synthesis of polypropylene on an industrial scale in a fluidized-bed reactor. The identification was achieved employing a configuration of the seven-valve chromatographic system, with events at different times, allowing distribution of the sample through multiple columns, and finally reaching the helium ionization detectors of pulsed discharge, flame ionization and mass spectrometry. The results obtained show a good precision of the method used because the variability was less than 1.02% in area an…
RP-HPLC-DAD determination of the differences in the polyphenol content of Fucus vesiculosus extracts with similar antioxidant activity.
2021
Abstract Significant quantities of bioactive compounds have been found in the chemical composition of seaweeds. This source of natural antioxidants such as polyphenols appears to attenuate lipid peroxidation caused by oxidative stress, preventing the harmful effects of a number of injuries including ischemia–reperfusion (I/R). Conventional extraction (CE) has been used for years as a traditional method for obtaining bioactive components from seaweeds. However, recent studies highlight ultrasonic-assisted extraction (UAE) as an alternative and more eco-friendly technique. Therefore, the two methods were optimised and compared to obtain a Fucus vesiculosus extract (FVE) with high antioxidant …
Enzyme-assisted extraction of polyphenol from edible lotus (Nelumbo nucifera) rhizome knot: Ultra-filtration performance and HPLC-MS2 profile
2018
Rhizome knot is always wasted as useless and inedible part of lotus root, despite its abundance of polyphenols. In this work, enzyme-assisted extraction followed by ultra-filtration was investigated to recover polyphenols from rhizome knot. Cellulase and pectinase treatment enhanced the polyphenols extraction. The 100 kDa membrane resulted in better filtration yield than 50 kDa membrane, 3.84% and 3.37%, respectively. With 100 kDa membrane, the highest filtration yield (4.08%) was achieved with a rotational speed of 600 rpm, TMP of 0.3 MPa and pH of 5. Satisfied permeate turbidity ( 90%) were obtained under these conditions. The main polyphenols identified in both rhizome knot extract and p…
Bio-phenols determination in olive oils: Recent mass spectrometry approaches
2021
Extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) is largely used in Mediterranean diet, and it is also worldwide apprised not only for its organoleptic properties but also for its healthy effects mainly attributed to the presence of several naturally occurring phenolic and polyphenolic compounds (bio-phenols). These compounds are characterized by the presence of multiple phenolic groups in more or less complex structures. Their content is fundamental in defining the healthy qualities of EVOO and consequently the analytical methods for their characterization and quantification are of current interest. Traditionally their determination has been conducted using a colorimetric assay based on the reaction of Folin…
Gas assisted mechanical expression (GAME) as a promising technology for oil and phenolic compound recovery from tiger nuts
2015
Abstract The aim of this work was to investigate the potential of gas assisted mechanical expression (GAME) process as an innovative technology for oil extraction and polyphenol recovery from tiger nuts. GAME process was first studied by varying the supercritical carbon dioxide (SC-CO2) and the mechanical expression (ME) pressures (10–30 MPa), then was compared to separate processes applied alone, using either SC-CO2 or ME. The results showed that the better conditions for GAME were found using 20 MPa for SC-CO2 and 30 MPa for ME. Under these conditions, 50% of oil was released from tiger nuts after 10 min extraction, compared to only 10% and 20% when using SC-CO2 and ME separately at 20 an…
A simple and rapid DNA extraction method from leaves of grapevine suitable for polymerase chain reaction analysis.
2012
The genomic grapevine (Vitis vinifera L.) DNA extraction is difficult because of secondary metabolites that interfere with DNA isolation procedures and subsequent applications. We developed a simple, rapid and efficient method for the extraction of genomic DNA from asymptomatic and pathogen-infected grape leaves. The protocol reported, based on a modified cetyl trimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) extraction procedure, allowed the rapid DNA extraction from little amounts of leaf material without employment of liquid nitrogen for initial tissue grinding. The protocol included polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) to bind phenolic compounds, β-mercaptoethanol to inhibit the oxidation of polyphenols, and a h…
The Polyphonic Theology of the Church Fathers
2014
Prof. Dr. Dres. H. c. Christoph Marschies (Humboldt University Berlin, Germany) in collaboration with Prof. Dr. Michael Welker (Heidelberg University, Germany) initiated an international project to which about 25 international scholars of high profile were invited to participate. The purpose of the project is to gain a new and nuanced perspective on the theology of 19 church fathers: Justin the Martyr, Irenaeus of Lyon, Tertullian, Origen, Cyprian, Eusebius, Athanasius of Alexandria, Basil the Great, Gregory of Nazianzus, Gregory of Nyssa, John Chrysostom, Augustine, Cyril of Alexandria, Leo the Great, Theodoret of Cyrus, Boethius, Isidore, Maximus the Confessor and John Damascene. Research…
Inactivation and structural changes of polyphenol oxidase in quince ( Cydonia oblonga Miller) juice subjected to ultrasonic treatment
2020
Background Polyphenol oxidase (PPO) is considered a problem in the food industry because it starts browning reactions during fruit and vegetable processing. Ultrasonic treatment is a technology used to inactivate the enzyme; however, the mechanism behind PPO inactivation is still unclear. For this reason, the inactivation, aggregation, and structural changes in PPO from quince juice subjected to ultrasonic treatments were investigated. Different intensities and times of ultrasonic treatment were used. Changes in the activity, aggregation, conformation, and structure of PPO were investigated through different structural analyses. Results Compared to untreated juice, the PPO activity in treat…
Valorization of apple peels through the study of the effects on the amyloid aggregation process of ?-casein
2021
Waste valorization represents one of the main social challenges when promoting a circular economy and environmental sustainability. Here, we evaluated the effect of the polyphenols extracted from apple peels, normally disposed of as waste, on the amyloid aggregation process of ?-casein from bovine milk, a well-used amyloidogenic model system. The effect of the apple peel extract on protein aggregation was examined using a thioflavin T fluorescence assay, Congo red binding assay, circular dichroism, light scattering, and atomic force microscopy. We found that the phenolic extract from the peel of apples of the cultivar "Fuji", cultivated in Sicily (Caltavuturo, Italy), inhibited ?-casein fib…
Influence of orange cultivar and mandarin postharvest storage on polyphenols, ascorbic acid and antioxidant activity during gastrointestinal digestio…
2017
Polyphenols, ascorbic acid content and antioxidant activity of two sweet oranges (Navel-N and Cara Cara-CC) and mandarin (Clementine-M) as well as their bioaccessibilities were evaluated in pulps and compared to those in fresh juice. Thus, pulps of oranges and mandarins displayed higher hesperidin (HES), narirutin (NAR), total flavonoids (TF), total phenols (TP) and antioxidant activity (AAC) than their corresponding juices. Also, CC products presented higher bioactive compounds content than N ones. Bioaccessibility of bioactive compounds and AAC were higher in pulps of both oranges and mandarin than in their corresponding juices. Oranges (N and CC) pulps and juices presented higher bioacce…
