Original paper: A new type of polyphenols-containing dietary supplement for correction of lipids and inflammatory markers in patients with coronary a…
2018
Abstract Objective: To evaluate the impact of two original compositions of polyphenols-containing dietary supplement on lipid profile and level of C-reactive protein (CRP) in patients with angiographycally verified coronary artery disease (CAD). Design and methods: 167 patients were selected during their scheduled post-event elective bicycle stress-test examination. All patients received standard CAD therapy and permanent statin therapy and had elevated total cholesterol (TC > 5.0 mmol/L) and/or CRP (>3.5 mg/L) levels. The study consisted of 2 days of polyphenol depletion followed by a 12-week supplementation period in a randomized, blinded, placebo-uncontrolled parallel design. Two d…
Polyphenol-rich and alcoholic beverages and metabolic status in adults living in Sicily, Southern Italy
2021
Polyphenol-rich beverage consumption is not univocally accepted as a risk modulator for cardio-metabolic risk factors, despite mechanistic and epidemiological evidence suggesting otherwise. The aim of this study was to assess whether an association between polyphenol-rich beverage consumption and metabolic status could be observed in a Mediterranean cohort with relatively low intake of tea, coffee, red and white wine, beer, and fresh citrus juice. Demographic and dietary characteristics of 2044 adults living in southern Italy were analyzed. Multivariate logistic regression analyses were used to calculate odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of the association between polyphe…
Citrus sinensis and Vitis vinifera Protect Cardiomyocytes from Doxorubicin-Induced Oxidative Stress: Evaluation of Onconutraceutical Potential of Veg…
2020
Abstract: The interest towards nutraceuticals able to counteract drug side effects is continuously growing in current chemotherapeutic protocols. In the present study, we demonstrated that smoothies containing mixtures of Citrus sinensis and Vitis vinifera L. cv. Aglianico N, two typical fruits of the Mediterranean diet, possess bioactive polyphenols that protect cardiomyocytes against doxorubicin-induced oxidative stress. The polyphenolic extracts isolated from Citrus sinensis- and Vitis vinifera-based functional smoothies were deeply characterized by Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry methods. Subsequently, the functional smoothies and relative mixtures were tested to verify their ab…
Analysis of Lipid Peroxidation by UPLC-MS/MS and Retinoprotective Effects of the Natural Polyphenol Pterostilbene
2021
The loss of redox homeostasis induced by hyperglycemia is an early sign and key factor in the development of diabetic retinopathy. Due to the high level of long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids, diabetic retina is highly susceptible to lipid peroxidation, source of pathophysiological alterations in diabetic retinopathy. Previous studies have shown that pterostilbene, a natural antioxidant polyphenol, is an effective therapy against diabetic retinopathy development, although its protective effects on lipid peroxidation are not well known. Plasma, urine and retinas from diabetic rabbits, control and diabetic rabbits treated daily with pterostilbene were analyzed. Lipid peroxidation was evalu…
Pterostilbene in Cancer Therapy.
2021
Natural polyphenols are organic chemicals which contain phenol units in their structures and possess antitumor properties. However, a key problem is their short half-life and low bioavailability under in vivo conditions. Pterostilbene (3,5-dimethoxy-4′-hydroxystilbene; PT) is a phytoalexin originally isolated from the heartwood of red sandalwood. As recently reported by our group, PT was shown to be effective in the treatment of melanoma. Counterintuitively, PT is not effective (cytotoxic) against melanoma in vitro, and only under in vivo conditions does PT display its anticancer activity. This study elucidated that PT can be effective against melanoma through the inhibition of adrenocortic…
Wild apple (Malus spp.) by-products as a source of phenolic compounds and vitamin C for food applications
2020
Abstract The phytochemical profile and positive health effects of the fruits and by-products of domesticated Malus domestica Borkh. apple cultivars have been extensively investigated. The present study was designed to evaluate the hydrophilic composition and antioxidant activity of the compounds recovered from wild apple Malus spp. by-products. The phytochemical analysis of the 30 and 96% ethanolic extracts using LC-DAD-ESI-MS/MS has led to the detection and isolation of 25 hydrophilic compounds. Amongst the polyphenols, chlorogenic acid, B-type procyanidins, and phloretin-2-glucoside dominated. The results of HPLC-DPPH• radical scavenging showed that the major contributors to the antioxida…
“Framboisé” spoilage in French ciders: Zymomonas mobilis implication and characterization
2006
Abstract Biodiversity of 17 Zymomonas mobilis strains isolated from French “framboise” ciders from 7 different geographical areas of France was analysed using random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) and 6 different strain fingerprints were observed. One of the fingerprints was identical for 10 of the 17 cases. No correlation between geographical origin and strain fingerprint was observed. In parallel, the cider-making process was followed from the orchard to the final product for Z. mobilis presence. Detection of the bacterium only occurred during the fermentation process. The French isolate, strain AN0101, recently proposed as a novel subspecies ( Z. mobilis subsp. francensis ) was charact…
Antioxidant activity and phenolic composition in pomegranate (Punica granatumL.) genotypes from south Italy by UHPLC-Orbitrap-MS approach
2018
Background: Pomegranate fruits are a rich source of polyphenols with numerous health-promoting effects. Pomegranate juices of five genotypes ('Mollar', 'Kingdom', 'Dente di Cavallo', and two old populations 'Francofonte' and 'Santa Tecla') were evaluated regarding anthocyanin and non-anthocyanin phenolic contents using ultrahigh performance liquid chromatography (UHPLC)-Orbitrap-mass spectrometry (MS). Moreover, total antioxidant activity (TAA) was evaluated using a 2,2'-azinobis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) diammonium salt (ABTS) assay.; Results: Twenty-three phenolic compounds were identified. Cyanidin-3,5-O-diglucoside and pelargonidin-3,5-O-diglucoside were the most represent…
Antiproliferative activity of green, black tea and olive leaves polyphenols subjected to biosorption and in vitro gastrointestinal digestion in Caco-…
2020
Olive (Olea europaea L.) leaves and tea (Camellia sinensis) are rich sources of bioactive compounds, especially polyphenols. Our previous studies have evidenced the potential use of Saccharomyces cerevisiae as a natural delivery system for these antioxidants and a means to improve their bioaccessibility in the human gut. In the present work, the antiproliferative effect of green tea (GT), black tea (BT) and olive leaves (OL) infusions and suspensions of S. cerevisiae were evaluated, for the first time, in human colon cancer cells (Caco-2) after biosorption and in vitro gastrointestinal digestion. The bioaccessible fractions (BF) were not overtly cytotoxic, not affecting cell viability. ROS …
Oxidative stability of virgin olive oil: evaluation and prediction with an adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS).
2019
Background An adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) was employed to predict the oxidative stability of virgin olive oil (VOO) during storage as a function of time, storage temperature, total polyphenol, α-tocopherol, fatty acid profile, ultraviolet (UV) extinction coefficient (K268 ), and diacylglycerols (DAGs). Results The mean total quantities of polyphenols and DAGs were 1.1 and 1.9 times lower in VOOs stored at 25 °C than in the initial samples, and the mean total quantities of polyphenols and DAGs were 1.3 and 2.26 times lower in VOOs stored at 37 °C than in the initial samples, respectively. In a single sample, α-tocopherol was reduced by between 0.52 and 0.91 times during sto…
