Folktales and Other References in Toriyama's Dragon Ball
2014
The aim of this article is to show the relationship between Japanese folktales and Japanese anime as a genre, especially how the intertextuality with traditional tales and myth subvert its conventional use. To meet this goal, the author examines Toriyama’s successful Dragon Ball series, which has enjoyed continued popularity right from its first publication in the 1980s. The article analyses the parallelism between Dragon Ball and a classic Chinese novel, Journey to the West, its main source. However, there are many other references present in Dragon Ball that are connected to religion and folktales. The author illustrates this relationship with examples taken from the anime that correspond…
“Excess and Irony in Transatlantic Cable Poetry”
1994
The completion of the first successful transatlantic telegraph link in August 1858 was a major technological triumph which sparked an extreme reaction among the American public. Not only was the laying of the cable one of the most ambitious and costly engineering projects of the nineteenth century, but the celebrations in the United States which ensued in the weeks following the establishment of this instantaneous communications link between Europe and America were unprecedented and may well ...
Translating film titles
2014
In Spain, as in the rest of the non-Anglophone Western world, English-language film titles have become texts (or paratexts) of great cultural importance. The titles of the films that one may encounter in Western cinema can be considered, on the one hand ephemeral, elusive, and inconsequential. However, on the other hand, despite their clear irrelevance, film titles are considered to be the genuine contemporary cultural texts, for their continued presence in the media and for their evocative nature: an important marketing tool. Moreover, the result of what happens when film titles are translated into other languages and cultures has always intrigued the audience: this is perhaps indicative o…

Despite the fact that the language of the lyric is clear but in order to have an in-depth understanding one needs to have a fit and proper approach. This is because of the locality of the context through language and cultural convention. Therefore in this research t…

International audience; This article provides an analysis of the lyrics of Clinton Fearon and Protoje, two major figures of contemporary Jamaican popular music.
