Analysis of Users Behaviour from a Movie Preferences Perspective

2018

Despite their tremendous popularity, Online Social Networks (OSNs) have several issues related to the privacy of social users. These issues have motivated researchers to develop OSN services that take advantage of the decentralized platforms (such as P2P systems or opportunistic networks). Decentralized Online Social Networks (DOSNs) need specific approaches to manage the decentralization of social data. In particular, data availability is one of the main issues and current proposals exploit properties of the social relationships to manage it. At the best of our knowledge, there are no proposals which exploit similarity between users, expressed with the term homophily. Homophily has been we…

Popular toponomastics pathways in Sicily: contacts between categories and new connotations

2014

This study is a reflection on the category of popular toponym and on the pathways which they are subjected to. It operates in two directions: the first one is that of onomaturgy, the second one takes into account overextensions, secondary connotations and people's consciousness of places. The first issue moves from the reflections resulted from the collection of ethnic nicknames (or blasons pupulaires) in Sicily. In particular, we start from the observation according to which popular anthroponyms can contribute to generate in speakers popular toponyms that follow a pathway of overlapping/substitution like the one concerning ethnics and blasons populaires. The second issue regards official t…

La canzone popolare italiana fra implicazioni diastratiche e riusi colti

2015

This paper studies the linguistic variability in Italian music songs from a sociola point of view, a new research approach with only few studis in the current bibliography. The social factors of linguistic variation will be called into question to discuss the meaning of "folk song", a rather complex notion. First of all, we shall remark that many recent studies on songs use the term 'opular' with a quite different meaning rather than the meaning used in Italian linguistics. The variationist approach allows us to define the meaning of "folk song", because it shoes the close relationship between linguistic features and the social world represented in folk songs. In this perspective, we shall …

Foreign literature as poison: (self-)censorship in the translation of German popular fiction in Italy during the 1930s

2018

Between the 1920s and 1930s, the translation of foreign contemporary novels into Italian was encouraged by publishers, meeting the needs of a new readership, which was larger and more heterogeneous than before the war. However, the sharp rise in the number of imported novels provoked strong disapproval. In a context of heightened nationalism and cultural autocracy, translation was considered a polluting, anti-patriotic and servile practice. The censorship that took place, however, was mostly implemented via a tacit compromise between the publishers and the regime, rather than by repressive institutional actions. In order to protect themselves from sanctions and requisitions, publishers and …

2019

Cat as an animal is a sporadic presence in Vedic mythology and Brahmanic works on rituals, while it appears in a few cult practices of contemporary popular religiosity in India. This article holds that in Indian devotional practices, the cat is conceived as an animal with an ambiguous nature. It also suggests that the cat cult is linked with the need to tame chaos, violence, and con$ict, and to place them in a controlled, orderly, and pacified cosmos. To understand these phenomena, this article studies, from a multidisciplinary perspective, contemporary religious practices in the light of the Indian tradition, and suggests that the cat cult was subject to substantial Brahmanization.

Le Tradizioni popolari di Nuoro di Grazia Deledda

2022

Writing today about Grazia Deledda's Popular Traditions of Nuoro imposes an immediate and not easy comparison with those who have already written and said in an anthropological key of the Nuoro work and writer, that is, the authoritative exponents of the Ciresian school – and Cirese first , and not always, almost never one could say, they wrote and/or said about it in enthusiastic terms. Their positions, perplexities, points of view are almost completely shared even if at the same time in the opinion of the writer, perhaps, sometimes, Deledda has been written and said too severely. The contribution wants to try to question the Sardinian Nobel differently, or try to think again about the dem…

Iperestetica. Arte, natura, vita quotidiana e nuove tecnologie

2012

2016

Somali refugees who fled the collapse of their homeland and resettled in EU narrate ‘who they are’ through the graphic novel Meet the Somalis. This paper explores their counter/story to undermine the Fortress Europe’s discourse. The main issue is to look at the diaspora through the trajectory of the journey and the “settling in” phase. The graphic novel as “remarkable antidote” (Said, 2002) narrates stereotypes, racisms and successes of the Somali people, helping the reader to understand them as individuals, with distinct experiences and separate stories.
