Modeling and Simulation as a Pedagogical and Heuristic Tool for Developing Theories in Cognitive Science: An Example from Ritual Competence Theory

2019

An interdisciplinary team of researchers in the fields of philosophy, religious studies, cognitive science, and computer science aimed to develop a computer model of ritual behaviour, based on McCauley and Lawson’s theory of ritual competence. That endeavour revealed some questions about the internal consistency and significance of the theory that had not previously been noticed or addressed. It also demonstrated how modeling and simulation can serve as valuable pedagogical and heuristic tools for better specifying theories that deal with complex social phenomena.

Application of pulsed electric fields in meat and fish processing industries: An overview.

2019

The market demand for new meat and fish products with enhanced physicochemical and nutritional properties attracted the interest of the food industry and academia to investigate innovative processing approaches such as pulsed electric fields (PEF). PEF is an emerging technology based on the application of electrical currents between two electrodes thus inducing electroporation phenomena and enabling a non-invasive modification of the tissues' structure. This review provides an overview of the current knowledge on the use of PEF processing in meat and fish to enhance the physicochemical and nutritional changes, as a preservation method, as well as for improving the extraction of high added-v…

Latvijas Universitātes karogs: izcelsme un simboliskā nozīme: video

2021

Public Administration and the Study of Political Order: Towards a Framework for Analysis

2020

The contribution of this study is two-fold: First, it outlines a conceptual framework on political order; and secondly, it offers empirical illustrations on the case of Nordic cooperation. Taken together, the article makes a plea for public administration scholarship in the study of political order. Political order consists of a relatively stable arrangement of institutions that are fairly formalized and institutionalized. A common political order, moreover, entails that relevant institutions: (i) are fairly independent of pre-existing institutions; (ii) are relatively integrated and internally cohesive; and (iii) are reasonably able to influence governance processes within other institutio…

Implementation of IFRS in Japan: An Analysis of Voluntary Adoption by Listed Firms

2019

Since 2010 Japanese listed firms can voluntarily use international financial reporting standards for their consolidated financial statements. Using financial and non-financial data, we carry out a comprehensive research into the adopters’ determinants. We employ a multi-period logit model that considers every annual decision made along the period 2010-2019. We find that the having outside networks through subsidiaries and a strong internal corporate governance system are key factors. We also confirm a contagion effect. Finally, our results suggest that goodwill is also relevant, since only Japanese accounting standards require annual amortization.

Counter-Clock World: How Planning Backwards Helps in Moving Forward in Collapsing Environments

2021

Research on corporate decline and turnarounds as well as the strategic use of history have so far remained two separate research fields. We integrate these two fields with a thought experiment, proposing ways in which strategists can work with, and through time in managing and turning around declines. Our thought experiment involves two very different types of analogies: a textual one from Philip K. Dick’s science fiction novels, on the one hand, and a visual one from Einsteinian relativity science, on the other hand. Inspired and informed by these different conceptualizations of the past and time, we develop four forms of backward strategizing to successfully manage a struggling corporatio…

Responsabilité Sociale de l'Entreprise et pratiques de Gestion des Ressources Humaines

2006

As far as human resource management practices (HRM) are concerned, how do French companies respond to corporate social responsibility (CSR)? Are they eager to develop practices beyond the existing legal rules? To answer these questions, we present the results of an inquiry involving 106 HR managers who mainly belong to large manufacturing companies. Their statements, collected by questionnaire, are focused on a few "responsible" HRM practices: - Recruiting practices in favour of disabled or non skilled persons - Training practices promoting the access or the return to work - Communication practices encouraging the dialog between the managers and the employees. According to our results, the …

On the Creeping of Saturated Salt Solutions

2013

Creeping is a well-known but annoying phenomenon in the preparation of crystals from solution, where growing crystallites gradually extend up the walls of the growth vessel. In this process, solution is transported toward the tip of the creeping crystallites, where solvent evaporation takes place and solid material is deposited. In this study, the growth of crystal aggregates extending from evaporating droplets of saturated aqueous solutions of ionic salts, placed on different substrate materials, has been investigated using optical microscopy. It is shown that the rate determining step of the crystallization process is the evaporation of solution, following Fick’s laws. Fresh solution, nec…

Structural and Vibrational Study of a New Mixed Dipotassium Hydrogenselenate Dihydrogenphosphate K2(HSeO4)1.5 (H2PO4)0.5.

2006

Abstract Ongoing studies of the KHSeO4–KH2PO4 system, aimed at developing novel proton conducting solids, resulted in the new compound K2(HSeO4)1.5(H2PO4)0.5 (dipotassium hydrogenselenate dihydrogenphosphate). The crystals have been prepared by slow evaporation of an aqueous solution at room temperature. The structural properties of the crystals were characterized by X-ray single analysis (performed at room temperature), which revealed that K2(HSeO4)1.5(H2PO4)0.5 (KHSeP) crystallizes in space group P 1 ¯ with lattice parameters: a = 7.417(3) A, b = 7.668(2) A, c = 7.744(5) A, α = 71.59(3)°, β = 87.71(4)° and γ = 86.04(6)°. The compound has a unit cell volume 416.8(3) A3 and two formula unit…

The Purpose and Age of Underwater Walls in the Bay of Elaia of Western Turkey: A Multidisciplinary Approach

2014

Pergamum (modern: Bergama) was operating an important harbour used by military forces and merchants at the city of Elaia during Hellenistic and Roman Imperial times. Harbour-related facilities such as warehouses, breakwaters and wharfs document the importance of this harbour site not only for the Pergamenians. This paper focuses on the purpose and age of six submerged wall structures situated approximately 1 km south of the ancient closed harbour basin of Elaia. Geoelectric cross-sections and semi-aquatic coring near these walls failed to detect any solid basement under the walls which excludes their possible use as breakwaters or wharfs. Instead, the walls were most likely delineating and …
