The selective estrogen receptor modulator, bazedoxifene, reduces ischemic brain damage in male rat
2014
While the estrogen treatment of stroke is under debate, selective estrogen receptor modulators (SERMs) arise as a promising alternative. We hypothesize that bazedoxifene (acetate, BZA), a third generation SERM approved for the treatment of postmenopausal osteoporosis, reduces ischemic brain damage in a rat model of transient focal cerebral ischemia. For comparative purposes, the neuroprotective effect of 17β-estradiol (E2) has also been assessed. Male Wistar rats underwent 60min middle cerebral artery occlusion (intraluminal thread technique), and grouped according to treatment: vehicle-, E2- and BZA-treated rats. Optimal plasma concentrations of E2 (45.6±7.8pg/ml) and BZA (20.7±2.1ng/ml) w…
Safety Considerations of Inhaled Corticosteroids in the Elderly
2014
Inhaled corticosteroids (ICSs) are widely used in the treatment of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases. However, high-dose regimens and long-term use of ICSs have the potential to cause a variety of local and systemic side effects such as candidiasis, cataracts, glaucoma, and osteoporosis. The use of ICSs can also be associated with the risk of bone fractures, diabetes mellitus and pneumonia. These ICS-related side effects are of particular importance in elderly patients due to the presence of comorbidities and age-related behavioral, cognitive, and psychological problems, which can all interact with inhaled treatment. We reviewed the available literature on the clinically …
Circulating cathepsin K and cystatin C in patients with cancer related bone disease: clinical and therapeutic implications.
2007
Abstract The clinical significance of serum cathepsin K and cystatin C was assessed in patients with breast cancer (BCa) or prostate cancer (PCa) with confined disease (M0) or bone metastasis (BM). Cathepsin K and cystatin C circulating levels were determined by ELISAs in 63 cancer patients, in 35 patients with nonmalignant diseases and in 42 healthy blood donors (control group). In BCa patients, cathepsin K serum levels were significantly lower than in sex matched control group (HS; p = 0.0008) or in patients with primary osteoporosis (OP; p = 0.0009). On the contrary, cystatin C levels were significantly higher in BCa patients than in HS ( p = 0.0001) or OP ( p = 0.017). In PCa patien…
Inhaled steroids and prevalence of osteoporosis in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease: Data from the DACCORD cohort
2020
Introduction: Osteoporosis is a frequent COPD comorbidity with age, female gender, smoking, immobility and the use of oral steroids (OCS) as common risk factors. The role of inhaled steroids (ICS) is still under debate. Methods: Baseline data from the real life cohort DACCORD were analyzed. The diagnosis of osteoporosis was based on patients’ reports of physician-based diagnoses. Associations of ICS exposure at time of inclusion and osteoporosis were examined by group comparisons and multivariable logistic regression analyses with age, gender, smoking, exacerbation history (EH) and FEV1% as covariates. To avoid interactions with other steroid containing medications, exposure to any corticos…
Switch from LABA+ICS to a LABA/LAMA combination in symptomatic women with COPD – an analysis of the observational DACCORD study
2018
Introduction: COPD prevalence in women has increased in recent years and the importance of avoiding ICS use in this group, because of its potential negative impact on comorbidities such as osteoporosis and diabetes, has become a topic of interest. In this real-life cohort women with COPD that were switched from LABA+ICS treatment to a fixed combination of LABA/LAMA were followed for 1 year. Methods: DACCORD is a prospective, non-interventional 2-year study in the primary and secondary care setting throughout Germany. Patients were recruited after a change in, or initiation of COPD maintenance medication. Data collected at baseline and every 3 months included moderate/severe exacerbations an…
Hyaluronic Acid–Silica Nanohybrid Gels
2013
Excessive water sorption and low mechanical properties are a severe drawback in some biomedical applications of hyaluronic acid (HA). A way to improve these properties is here explored through the novel concept of nanohybrid hydrogels consisting of a HA matrix including different amounts of silica-derived species. This inorganic filler phase controls the mechanical and swelling properties of HA cross-linked matrices. Below a 2 wt % of silica in the systems, nanoparticle aggregates of tens of nanometers and silica oligomers are distributed more or less homogeneously throughout the organic matrix, without percolating. This morphology of the silica phase is accompanied by an increased swelling…
Contribution to the flora of Asian and European countries: new national and regional vascular plant records, 2
2014
The paper presents new records for 20 vascular plant species from eight Asian and two European countries. Five taxa (Artemisia campestris, Artemisia tanacetifolia, Delphinium sajanense, Diarthron vasiculosum var. undulatum, Epilobium adenocaulon) are reported from Kazakhstan, four (Deyeuxia yanyuanensis, Poa arnoldii, Stipa gracilis, Stipa macroglossa subsp. kazachstanica) from China, three (Nepeta pamirensis, Silene bucharica, Scrophularia pamiro-alaica) from Uzbekistan, two (Epilobium nervosum, Stellaria zolotukhinii) from Mongolia, two (Oenothera deflexa, Scirpus georgianus) from Poland, one (Coronopus didymus) from Tajikistan, one (Orobanche rumseiana) from Italy, one (Stipa macroglossa…
Influence of a major exposure surface on the development of microporous micritic limestones - Example of the Upper Mishrif Formation (Cenomanian) of …
2017
18 pages; International audience; Microporous platform top limestones of the Cenomanian Mishrif Formation (offshore Qatar) were studied in order to investigate the diagenetic processes associated with the top-Mishrif subaerial unconformity and its influence on the development of microporosity in underlying carbonates. Petrographical and stable isotope results indicate that complex diagenetic changes occurred during subaerial exposure of the Mishrif Formation, including pervasive dissolution and meteoric cementation, as well as neomorphism of the micritic matrix. Micrites at the top of the Mishrif Formation are coarse (i.e. > 2 μm), sub-rounded and very dull luminescent under cathodoluminesc…
