Mediterranean diet and health: A systematic review of epidemiological studies and intervention trials

2019

Diet is a crucial variable for a healthy life. A rapidly growing number of studies in recent years support the hypothesis that the Mediterranean diet (MedDiet) has a beneficial effect on certain body systems, but the highly varied objectives and quality of these publications warrants an updated assessment. In the present review we performed a comprehensive evaluation of current evidence on the impact of the MedDiet on human health, assessing its effect on the incidence or progression of the main non-communicable diseases and their intermediate outcomes and risk factors. We scrutinised the clinical evidence from observational studies and randomised controlled trials. Cardiovascular disease w…

Respuesta de preosteoblastos a compuestos de estroncio o calcio: proliferación, diferenciación, mineralización y respuesta génica global

2013

Impact of osteoporosis and vertebral fractures on quality-of-life. a population-based study in Valencia, Spain (The FRAVO Study)

2011

Abstract Background To describe the health related quality of life in a population sample of postmenopausal women over the age of 50 and resident in the city of Valencia (Spain), according to the presence/absence of osteoporosis and the severity of prevalent morphometric vertebral fractures. Methods A cross-sectional age-stratified population-based sample of 804 postmenopausal women of 50 years of age and older were assessed with the SF-12 questionnaire. Information about demographic features, lifestyle, clinical features, educational level, anti-osteoporotic and other treatments, comorbidities and risk factors for osteoporosis were collected using an interviewer-administered questionnaire …

Alternative treatments for oral bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaws: a pilot study comparing fibrin rich in growth factors and teriparat…

2013

Objectives: The aim of this study is to describe and compare the evolution of recurrent bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaws (BRONJ) in patients treated with plasma rich in growth factors or teriparatide. Material and Methods: Two different types of treatments were applied in patients diagnosed of recurrent BRONJ in a referral hospital for 1.100.000 inhabitants. In the group A, plasma rich in growth factors was applied during the surgery. In the group B, the treatment consisted in the subcutaneous administration of teriparatide. All the cases of BRONJ should meet the following conditions: recurrent BRONJ, impossibility of surgery in stage 3 Ruggiero classification and absence of…

Osteonecrosis of the jaws associated with denosumab : study of clinical and radiographic characteristics in a series of clinical cases

2020

Background The objective of this study was to describe the clinical and radiographic characteristics of our series of medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaws (ONJ) associated with denosumab. Material and methods We presented 15 cases of ONJ associated with denosumab; 11 received treatment for their osteoporosis and four for cancer treatments. We recorded the most frequent clinical findings, symptoms and radiographic characteristics in our patient group, as well as local and systemic contributing factors. Results The mean time of treatment with denosumab was 23.83 ± 12.84 months. 40% of the patients had a previous history of treatment with bisphosphonates. The most common local factor w…

Effect of 2 years of endurance and high-impact training on preventing osteoporosis in postmenopausal women: randomized clinical trial.

2018

The aim of the study was to analyze the effects of endurance and high-impact training oriented toward preventing osteoporosis in postmenopausal women with calcium and vitamin D supplementation. This study was a randomized clinical trial. Thirty-six postmenopausal women were randomized to the control and experimental groups. Thirty-four women completed the 2-year interventions. The control group training involved walking at an intense pace. The experimental group conducted high-impact training specifically oriented to prevent osteoporosis. Dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry was used to estimate the T-scores of the lumbar spine and femoral neck. The fast-walking group showed constant T-scores in …

Implant treatment in patients with osteoporosis

2010

Osteoporosis is very common, particularly in post-menopausal women and is characterized by a decrease in bone mass and strength. Osteoporosis also affects the jawbone and it is considered a potential contraindication to placement of dental implants. The present paper reviews the literature regarding the effect of osteoporosis on osseointegration of implants. Experimental models have shown that osteoporosis affects the process of osseointegration, which can be reversed by treatment. However, studies in subjects with osteoporosis have shown no differences in survival of the implants compared to healthy individuals. Therefore, osteoporosis cannot be considered a contraindication for implant pl…

Bisphosphonates and atherosclerosis: why?

2005

The increasing knowledge on bone calcification processes has revealed some similarities with vascular tissue, where calcifications of arteries and cardiac valves contribute to several cardiovascular problems, such as heart failure, systolic hypertension, and myocardial and peripheral ischemic disease. Bisphosphonates have been used extensively for over two decades for the treatment of diseases associated with excessive bone resorption, i.e., osteoporosis, osteolytic bone metastasis, hypercalcemia and Paget’s disease, by blocking osteoclastic function. Etidronate, pamidronate and clodronate has been shown to inhibit the development of experimental atherosclerosis, and proposed mechanisms fo…

Alendronate-associated osteonecrosis of the jaws: a review of the main topics

2013

Bisphosphonates is a group of inorganic pyrophosphates analogues that suppress bone resorption by inducing osteoclast inactivation, being frequently used for management of diseases affecting bone metabolism, bone metastases and bone tumors. However, since 2003 many cases describing the presence of necrotic bone exposures in the jaws have been described in patients receiving these drugs, what represent a significant complication of bisphosphonates treatment. The overall incidence of bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaws is low, ranging from 0.7% to 12%, mainly observed in those patients receiving intravenously treatment. Osteonecrosis of the jaws associated to oral bisphosphonate,…

Current perspectives on parathyroid hormone (PTH) and PTH-related protein (PTHrP) as bone anabolic therapies.

2013

Osteoporosis is characterized by low bone mineral density and/or poor bone microarchitecture leading to an increased risk of fractures. The skeletal alterations in osteoporosis are a consequence of a relative deficit of bone formation compared to bone resorption. Osteoporosis therapies have mostly relied on antiresorptive drugs. An alternative therapeutic approach for osteoporosis is currently available, based on the intermittent administration of parathyroid hormone (PTH). Bone anabolism caused by PTH therapy is mainly accounted for by the ability of PTH to increase osteoblastogenesis and osteoblast survival. PTH and PTH-related protein (PTHrP)-an abundant local factor in bone- interact wi…
