Melanoma epidemiology, prognosis and trends in Latvia

2012

Background Melanoma incidence and mortality rates are increasing worldwide within the white population. Clinical and histological factors have been usually used for the prognosis and assessment of the risk for melanoma. Objectives The aim of the study was to describe the clinical and histopathological features of the cutaneous melanoma (CM) in the Latvian population, to test the association between melanoma features and patient survival, and to assess the time trends for melanoma incidence. Methods We undertook a descriptive, retrospective analysis of archive data of 984 melanoma patients treated at the largest oncological hospital of Latvia, Riga East University Hospital Latvian Oncology C…

Supportive Efficacy Analyses for the Phase 3 Study of Temsirolimus Versus Investigator’s Choice Therapy for the Treatment of Patients with Relapsed o…

2008

Abstract Temsirolimus (Torisel®) is a specific inhibitor of the mTOR kinase with antitumor activity in patients with relapsed or refractory mantle cell lymphoma. In a phase 3, randomized, open-label study, patients treated with temsirolimus 175 mg weekly 3 times followed by 75 mg weekly (175/75-mg) had significantly longer progression-free survival (PFS) than those treated with investigator’s choice therapy (p-value temsirolimus: investigator’s choice = 0.0009; hazard ratio = 0.44; 97.5% CI = 0.25, 0.78; Hess et al. J Clin Oncol.2008, 28:abs 8513). Patients treated with temsirolimus 175 mg weekly 3 times followed by 25 mg weekly (175/25-mg) showed a trend towards longer PFS than those treat…

Evaluating free school fruit: results from a natural experiment in Norway with representative data

2014

AbstractObjectiveTo assess impacts of the nationwide Norwegian School Fruit Scheme (NSFS) using nationally representative data.DesignThe NSFS is organized such that primary-school children (grades 1–7) are randomly assigned to one of three school fruit arrangements: (i) the child receives one free fruit or vegetable per day; (ii) the child is given the option to subscribe to one fruit or vegetable per day at a subsidized price; and (iii) the child attends a school that has no school fruit arrangement.SettingData from an Internet survey are used to compare child and parental fruit and vegetable intakes across the three NSFS groups focusing mainly on groups (i) and (iii). The analysis was con…

Prognostic Influence of Pre-Operative C-Reactive Protein in Node-Negative Breast Cancer Patients

2014

The importance of inflammation is increasingly noticed in cancer. The aim of this study was to analyze the prognostic influence of pre-operative serum C-reactive protein (CRP) in a cohort of 148 lymph node-negative breast cancer patients. The prognostic significance of CRP level for disease-free survival (DFS), metastasis-free survival (MFS) and overall survival (OS) was evaluated using univariate and multivariate Cox regression, also including information on age at diagnosis, tumor size, tumor grade, estrogen receptor (ER), progesterone receptor (PR) and human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) status, proliferation index (Ki67) and molecular subtype, as well as an assessment of the…

Immunohistochemical Detection of Hormone Receptors in Breast Carcinomas (ER-ICA, PgR-ICA): Prognostic Usefulness and Comparison with the Biochemical …

1994

In a prospective study conducted since 1983, the hormone-receptor status of primary breast carcinomas was investigated using immunohistochemical (ER-ICA, PgR-ICA) and biochemical (DCC) methods. The degree of immunohistochemical staining was evaluated according to the immunoreactive score (IRS) devised by Remmele and Stegner [Frauenarzt 28, 41-43 (1987)]. The findings obtained using the biochemical radioactive-ligand-binding assay (cutoff level, 20 fmol/mg) and those obtained using qualitative immunohistochemical methods were in agreement in 72.5% (ER-ICA) and 72.2% (PgR-ICA) of cases. For the 789 cases of primary breast carcinoma examined, postoperative data were available for a mean follow…

Acetaminophen Use During Pregnancy: Effects on Risk for Congenital Abnormalities

2008

Udgivelsesdato: 2008-Feb OBJECTIVE: We evaluated if acetaminophen, one of the most frequently used drugs among pregnant women is associated with an increased prevalence of congenital abnormalities. STUDY DESIGN: We selected 88,142 pregnant women and their liveborn singletons from the Danish National Birth Cohort who had information on acetaminophen use during the first trimester of pregnancy. We used the National Hospital Registry to identify 3784 (4.3%) children from the cohort diagnosed with 5847 congenital abnormalities. RESULTS: Children exposed to acetaminophen during the first trimester of pregnancy (n = 26,424) did not have an increased prevalence of congenital abnormalities (hazard …

Effectiveness of hexavalent vaccines against invasive Haemophilus influenzae type b disease: Germany's experience after 5 years of licensure

2007

Summary Vaccine effectiveness (VE) was determined with a case-cohort approach using Cox regression. Cases with confirmed systemic Hib infections in children born from 1 August 2000 to 31 December 2004 were ascertained through two independent nationwide active surveillance systems. A representative cohort of 1303 children born in the same time frame was randomly sampled in a nationwide immunisation survey. Thirty cases were eligible for VE calculation; 19 were unvaccinated and 11 vaccinated with hexavalent vaccines. VE was 68.4% (95% CI: 19.0–87.6) for incomplete primary series and 90.4% (95% CI: 70.6–96.8) for the full primary series. For full immunisation VE was 100.0% (95% CI: 52.7–100.0)…

Clinical and Prognostic Value of 18F-FDG-PET/CT in the Restaging Process of Recurrent Cutaneous Melanoma

2020

Background: Several studies on 18F-FDG-PET/CT have investigated the prognostic role of this imaging modality in different tumors after treatment. Nevertheless, its role in restaging patients with recurrent CM still needs to be defined. Objective: The aim of this retrospective multicenter study was to evaluate the clinical and prognostic impact of 18F-FDG-PET/CT on the restaging process of cutaneous melanoma (CM) after surgery in patients with suspected distant recurrent disease or suspected metastatic progression disease. Materials and Methods: 74 patients surgically treated for CM underwent 18F-FDG-PET/CT for suspected distant recurrent disease or suspected metastatic progression disease.…

The ALICE Transition Radiation Detector: Construction, operation, and performance

2018

The Transition Radiation Detector (TRD) was designed and built to enhance the capabilities of the ALICE detector at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). While aimed at providing electron identification and triggering, the TRD also contributes significantly to the track reconstruction and calibration in the central barrel of ALICE. In this paper the design, construction, operation, and performance of this detector are discussed. A pion rejection factor of up to 410 is achieved at a momentum of 1 GeV/$c$ in p-Pb collisions and the resolution at high transverse momentum improves by about 40% when including the TRD information in track reconstruction. The triggering capability is demonstrated both …

The isomeric structure of132Pr

2012

The isomeric structure of the neutron deficient nucleus 132Pr, located in the rare-earth region of the nuclear chart, has been studied with the 98Mo(40Ar,5pn)132Pr reaction at beam energies of 150, 158 and 165 MeV. The experiment was performed at the University of Jyvaskyla, Finland where the 40Ar beam was accelerated onto the target by the K130 cyclotron. The JUROGAM II HPGe detector array was employed in conjunction with the RITU gas-filled recoil separator. The focal-plane chamber housed a multi wire proportional counter and a position-sensitive silicon strip detector used for the implantation and identification of recoiling nuclei. The recoil-isomer tagging technique was used to correla…
