Scientific communication or a qualification for an academic career? What use is publishing papers in psychology journals?
2018
Influence of Resilience and Optimism on Distress and Intention to Self-Isolate: Contrasting Lower and Higher COVID-19 Illness Risk Samples From an Ex…
2021
The study investigated the influence of resilience and dispositional optimism on, first, emotional distress and, second, the intention to self-isolate, experienced by people with a lower and higher illness risk, during the lockdown imposed in Spain during the first COVID-19 wave. These effects were investigated against the background of the Health Belief Model (HBM). A convenience sample of N = 325 participants completed an online survey including an ad-hoc questionnaire measuring the HBM core factors: Perceived health threat (susceptibility and severity of getting infected), and perceived quarantine benefits and costs. Self-efficacy and perceived social pressure were also measured. Based o…
Principled animation design improves comprehension of complex dynamics
2016
International audience; Learners can have difficulty in decomposing conventionally designed animations to obtain raw material suitable for building high quality mental models. A composition approach to designing animations based on the Animation Processing Model was developed as a principled alternative to prevailing approaches. Outcomes from studying novel and conventional animation designs (independent variable) were compared with respect to mental model quality, knowledge of local kinematics, and capacity to transfer (dependent variables). Study of a compositional animation that presented material in a contiguous fashion resulted in higher quality mental models of a piano mechanism than …
Music in school teaching processes through the centuries
2015
Acquisition of music terms is a significant component in a contemporary music lesson in a comprehensive school nowadays. Methodology of teaching music as a separate branch in Latvia started developing in the beginning of the 20th century with the analysis of music educators’ experience published by I. Palevics. However, music as a subject at school has a longer history therefore it would be important to explore the pedagogic role of music in different periods because during music lessons not only students’ musicality and personal development are facilitated but also the tradition of singing which includes the tradition of Song Festival is maintained. In 2008 the tradition of Baltic Song and…
The mediating role of optimism in the relations between sense of coherence, subjective and psychological well-being among late adolescents
2015
Abstract The purpose of this study was to examine whether optimism is a mediator between sense of coherence, subjective well-being and psychological well-being among late adolescents. Two hundred and eleven participants completed the Sense of Coherence Scale, the Life Orientation Test-Revised, the Satisfaction With Life Scale, the Positive and Negative Affect Schedule, and the Psychological Well-Being Scale. Results of path analysis revealed both direct and indirect effects of sense of coherence on subjective and psychological well-being measures, suggesting that optimism served as a partial mediator. The mediating role of optimism may be more fully understood within the framework of the se…
Perceptions of Immigrants Towards Refugees and Finns
2021
For a full picture and for more developed insights into the intergroup relations between Finns, immigrants, refugees, and other migrants, it was important for us to look beyond the experiences of refugees and ethnic Finns and to examine the position of other immigrants living or residing in Finland. Thus, this chapter explores the perception immigrants have towards Finns and refugees. Building off intergroup threat theory (ITT), this chapter describes the extent to which immigrants perceive immigrants and refugees as a threat to Finnish society. Through an analysis of in-depth interviews, this chapter brings to light these perceived threats to understand the immigration and prejudice situat…
Art as Inquiry: The Autopsy of an [Art] Experience
2003
In this article, I explore transgressive experience by embracing my personal encounters with art and life. In accordance with a phenomenological approach, I emphasize immediate experience, description, and analysis of the world as a source of knowledge and understanding. From the perspective both of art education and research, I attempt to show the enslaving effect of conventions. Furthermore, I trace and lay bare the origins of my transgressive experience from a methodological viewpoint by describing and interpreting the moments and threads that link them with time, place, and situations, thus making transparent my actions as a researcher. I travel upstream, first discussing writing, then…
Lying, Implicating, and Presupposing
2018
Abstract The notions of ‘indirect lying’, ‘falsely implicating’, or ‘misleading’ refer to the phenomenon of lying by deliberately suggesting what is false in order to deceive the addressee. Thus, what the speaker asserts may be sincere and true, while what she implicates may be deceptive and false. This chapter reviews theoretical approaches that deal with untruthful implicature and untruthful presupposition, ‘untruthfulness’ meaning a subjective attitude towards truth. In these cases, an additional proposition is introduced into the discourse with the intention to deceive the addressee. Arguably, cases of so-called misleading can be reduced to untruthful implicatures. If so, untruthful add…
Background and Introduction: Why Debating Equal Pay for All?
2020
With an effort to justify the need to debate whether all people—no matter of profession and position (and also whether one has a job or not)—should have the same pay, this chapter introduces the anthology as well as the chapters and their different standpoints in the debate, along with their various bases for arguing as they do. After a brief background to the subject debated in the book, the book (and its format) is connected to the democratic aspect of debating. The final and major part of the chapter introduces and summarizes the remainder of the chapters in the book.
Finnish Students' School Engagement Profiles in the Light of PISA 2003
2008
The aim of this study is to examine Finnish students' school engagement profiles in the light of the data collected in the PISA (Programme for International Student Assessment) in 2003. Even though Finnish students' cognitive achievement has proved excellent in various international assessments, their school engagement has not been flattering. The article first defines the concept of school engagement and discusses some previous findings on students' attitudes and socio‐emotional disposition towards school life. Next, on the basis of students' responses to the PISA 2003 survey questionnaire, students are grouped and the groups profiled by cluster analysis into six distinct clusters in terms…
