Employment effects of reducing labour costs : considering potential bias in macro-estimates of the elasticity of labour demand
2017
In 2016 the Finnish government decided to implement the competitiveness pact in order to increase employment. The objective is to improve cost-competitiveness by lowering labor costs in the private sector. The elasticity of labour demand plays a key role in assessing the employment effects of the competitiveness pact. The idea of this study is based on the Economic Policy Council Report (2016) which argued that the government’s elasticity estimate is very high and predicts overly optimistic employment effects. The majority of studies estimate demand elasticities using aggregate data, which is likely to produce biased estimates. The problems relate in particular to the lack of exogenous vari…
Improved Radio-Cesium Detection Using Quantitative Real-Time Autoradiography
2023
Cesium-134 and -137 are prevalent, long-lived, radio-toxic contaminants released into the environment during nuclear accidents. Large quantities of insoluble, respirable Cs-bearing microparticles (CsMPs) were released into the environment during the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear accident. Monitoring for CsMPs in environmental samples is essential to understand the impact of nuclear accidents. The current detection method used to screen for CsMPs (phosphor screen autoradiography) is slow and inefficient. We propose an improved method: real-time autoradiography that uses parallel ionization multiplier gaseous detectors. This technique permits spatially resolved measurement of radioactivity while …
Does the evidence matter in medicine? The retinoblastoma paradigm.
2007
Retinoblastoma (Rb) is the most common intraocular malignant tumour in childhood, with an incidence of 1 in 15,000 live births. Complete information on this rare tumour can be easily accessed through the internet, although many aspect concerning the aetiology and pathogenesis of the disease, are still controversial. The "two hit" theory, formulated in 1971 to explain the variegated clinical expression of the disease, is based on the idea that single gene mutation may determine the development of cancer. However, this view does not take into account the most recent evidences showing the role of aneuploidy and chromosome instability in cancer. Also, a number of other genes and epigenetic mech…
Influence of B content on microstructure, phase composition and mechanical properties of CVD Ti(B,N) coatings
2022
Within this work the effect of the B content on the microstructure, phase composition and mechanical properties of CVD Ti(B,N) coatings is investigated. Ti(B,N) coatings with B contents from 0 (fcc-TiN) to ∼5, ∼15, ∼30, ∼45 and 66 (h-TiB2) at.% have been deposited by CVD. The elemental composition of the coatings was confirmed by ERDA and their microstructure was investigated using XRD and SEM. With increasing B content, a transition from a fcc to a h-dominated structure via dual-phase fcc/h-Ti(B,N) was observed, which was accompanied by a decreasing grain size from the µm to nm range. Combinatorial use of Raman spectroscopy, XPS and APT measurements indicated B-rich grain boundary segregat…
Bedrock and soil geochemistry influence the content of chemical elements in wild edible mushrooms (Morchella group) from South Italy (Sicily)
2019
Chemical elements in the samples of wild edible mushrooms of the Morchella group collected from different unpolluted Sicilian sites was analyzed by the ICP-MS (method) to detect the content of their minerals and determine whether soil geology and geochemistry can influence the chemical composition in fungi. Results showed that the mushroom samples mainly contained a high concentration of K and P and a wide variety of minor and trace elements (V, Mo, Pb, Ce, Cs, Zr), including heavy metals. Statistical analysis showed that the mushrooms differed in their content of minor and trace elements based on the geological/geographic site of origin. Comparison with other studies s…
Particle chemical properties in the vertical column based on aircraft observations in the vicinity of Cape Verde Islands
2011
During the second Saharan Mineral Dust Experiment (SAMUM-2) field campaign, particles with geometric diameters (d) between ∼0.1 and 25 μm were collected on board of the Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt (German Aerospace Center, DLR) Falcon aircraft. Size, chemical composition and mixing state of aerosols sampled (spatially and vertically resolved) along the West African coastline and in the Cape Verde Islands region were determined by electron microscopy. A pronounced layer structure of biomass-burning aerosol and desert dust was present for all days during the sampling period from 23 January to 6 February. The aerosol composition of the small particles (d < 0.5 μm) was highly v…
Decomposition rate and biochemical fate of carbon from natural polymers and microplastics in boreal lakes
2022
Microbial mineralization of organic compounds is essential for carbon recycling in food webs. Microbes can decompose terrestrial recalcitrant and semi-recalcitrant polymers such as lignin and cellulose, which are precursors for humus formation. In addition to naturally occurring recalcitrant substrates, microplastics have been found in various aquatic environments. However, microbial utilization of lignin, hemicellulose, and microplastics as carbon sources in freshwaters and their biochemical fate and mineralization rate in freshwaters is poorly understood. To fill this knowledge gap, we investigated the biochemical fate and mineralization rates of several natural and synthetic polymer-deri…
Kalcīts un tā veidošanās apstākļi Franas stāva smilšakmeņos un dolomītos Latvijā
2019
Maģistra darbā “Kalcīts un tā veidošanās apstākļi Franas stāva smilšakmeņos un dolomītos Latvijā” raksturotas kalcīta fizikālās īpašības, ķīmiskais sastāvs un veidošanās apstākļi. Pētījumi veikti 16 Amatas, Pļaviņu, Daugavas un Stipinu svītas atradnēs un atsegumos. Dokumentēti ģeoloģiskie griezumi, pētītas kalcīta fluorescences izpausmes un citas fizikālās īpašības, attiecības ar smilšakmens un dolomīta komponentiem plānslīpējumos, noteikts kalcīta ķīmiskais sastāvs un oglekļa stabilo izotopu attiecības. Secināts, ka kalcīts Amatas svītas smilšakmeņos un Pļaviņu, Daugavas un Stipinu svītas dolomītos kristalizējies līdzīgos apstākļos – no atmosfēras izcelsmes pazemes ūdeņiem sauszemes apstāk…
Different Measurement Setup Configurations for Space Charge test in Mini Cable Specimens with the PEA Method
2019
Under DC stress, the space charge accumulation is believed one of the most responsible of dielectrics ageing. For this reason, due to the increase of the HVDC transmission, a recommendation has been proposed. The latter want to introduce the space charge measure, with the PEA method, in cable specimens during the prequalification or type tests. Considering the several issues related to this kind of measures the aim of the proposed work is find a measurement setup for mini cable specimens which is able to provide a clear and clean space charge profile. Therefore, different tests have been made in this work. In particular, the length of the cable specimen, the width of the pulse electrodes, a…
Biogeographic patterns of base-rich fen vegetation across Europe
2014
International audience; Questions: What is the distribution of base-rich fen vegetation and the specia- list species along European biogeographic regions? How do the gradients in spe- cies composition correlate to geography and climate at continental scale? What are the implications of such patterns for the classification of these habitats?Location: Fifteen countries of Central, Western and Northern Europe. Methods: We compiled a vegetation plot database of base-rich fens and related communities including vascular plants and bryophytes. The initial data set with 6943 plots was filtered according to the presence of specialists using discriminant analysis. We used DCA to analyse the correlatio…
