La perspectiva intercultural. Ortega y la hermenéutica

2018

In this article, I present the intercultural perspective …

Phenomenological Paths to Metaphysics

1991

Fifty years after Husserl’s death it is becoming more necessary than ever to give deep thought to the fundamental aspirations of his phenomenology: to lay the foundations of philosophy as opposed to that naturalist, positivist, and objectivist rationality which leads to relativism and skepticism. Husserl’s attempt to create a first philosophy as a framework for philosophical rationality, by itself enough with which to conduct human life, should be reconsidered, since yet again we are living in a cultural situation where the power of facts prevails over the force of reason.

Sobre verdad, mentira y posverdad. Elementos para una filosofía de la información

2020

2015

The main objective of this article is to show Nietzsche’s decisive importance for the origin of vital reason in Ortega y Gasset, as an expression of the dawn of impure reason, which opens us a new philosophical horizon that is able to overcome idealism and positivism. On the basis of Nietzsche’s Aurora the article discusses the Nietzschean background and his infl uence on Ortega y Gasset’s path from pure reason to impure reason in the form of vital reason, understood by Ortega y Gasset as “The Dawn of Historical Reason” and characterized with Nietzschean elements such as imagination and the poetic capacity of the fantastic animal. Keywords: Nietzsche, Ortega y Gasset, reason, life, imaginat…

The Rhetoric and Relevance of IS Research Paradigms: Conceptual Foundations and Empirical Evidence

2006

This paper discusses the relevance of IS research with respect to the rhetoric associated with the three major IS research paradigms in use - positivism, constructivism/interpretivism and critical research. The conceptual discussion is framed in terms of the following dimensions: ontological, epistemological and methodological assumptions, relationship between theory and practice, and the role of the researcher in the research process. Based on this discussion, we propose a conceptual model to study the relationship between the espoused philosophical assumptions of researchers and the degree of relevance of researchers’ knowledge claims. This conceptual model was evaluated with data obtaine…

Neil MacCormick's Legal Positivism

2009

Frank H. Knight, pragmatism, and American institutionalism: A note

2009

This note deals with the debated question of whether, and to what extent, Frank Knight's epistemology was consistent with the general philosophy of American pragmatism. First, in accord with recent interpretations, I provide new evidence illustrating that Knight's views on science, knowledge and related philosophical topics present some important similarities with the pragmatic tradition. Second, I attempt to demonstrate that Knight's unsympathetic reading of Dewy and pragmatism was, to a relevant extent, a consequence of his aversion to the so-called scientific wing of American interwar institutionalism. © 2009 Taylor & Francis.

2013

Historians have demonstrated that Auguste Comte‟s philosophy became an eclectic positivism after its introduction to Latin America. The factors that help explain this eclecticism include positivism's connections with the writings of Herbert Spencer, Charles Darwin, and John Stuart Mill; the simultaneous circulation of print materials in their original language as well as their translations; and the emergence of an international publishing market in the late 19th century. This paper studies the flow of positivist ideas in Mexico and Argentina from the perspective of publishers and translators during a period when states were organizing their fundamental structures and education policies (185…

2021

Shapiro works out a version of legal positivism taking as its starting point Hart’s practice theory of law. Some serious limits of Hart’s practice theory of norms concern the conception of legal obligation and normativity of law. In this paper I analyze the limits of Hart’s conception of legal normativity and I appraise whether the planning theory of law indicates the correct direction for overcoming them. To anticipate the conclusion, my effort is to show that Shapiro replicates Hart’s mistakes on this subject-matters. The paper is divided in three main sections. First, I will present briefly a critical reconstruction of Hart’s conception of normativity, reconstruction which is partially d…
