Big Vector Bundles on Surfaces and Fourfolds

The aim of this note is to exhibit explicit sufficient criteria ensuring bigness of globally generated, rank-$r$ vector bundles, $r \geqslant 2$, on smooth, projective varieties of even dimension $d \leqslant 4$. We also discuss connections of our general criteria to some recent results of other authors, as well as applications to tangent bundles of Fano varieties, to suitable Lazarsfeld-Mukai bundles on four-folds, etcetera.

Finitary formal topologies and Stone’s representation theorem

AbstractWe study the concept of finitary formal topology, a point-free version of a topological space with a basis of compact open subsets. The notion of finitary formal topology is defined from the perspective of the Basic Picture (introduced by the second author) and thus it is endowed with a binary positivity relation. As an application, we prove a constructive version of Stone’s representation theorem for distributive lattices. We work within the framework of a minimalist foundation (as proposed by Maria Emilia Maietti and the second author). Both inductive and co-inductive methods are used in most proofs.

Hepatitis B virus and the human immunodeficiency virus are similarly transmitted. Individuals with preexisting HIV infection have a higher chance to become HBsAg carriers than do anti-HIV negative persons. Cytotoxic T cells with specificity for HBcAg, that are under the control of HBcAg-specific helper T cells, are responsible for liver injury. There is good evidence that HIV infection lowers inflammatory activity, is associated with milder liver histology, high levels of viral replication and low seroconversion rates. Mindfulness training is enjoying growing popularity in workplaces. In the current study, the effects of workplace mindfulness training were evaluated using quantitative and qualitative methods. The study’s novelty value arises from the implementation of workplace training among factory employees and the mixed-methods approach to evaluation. Background: Leishmania is a vector-borne parasite responsible for significant morbidity and mortality worldwide. The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of and risk factors for Leishmania infantum seropositivity in a sample of Sicilian population.Methods: A total of 260 subjects were interviewed using a standardized questionnaire and requested for an venous blood sample.Results: Overall, 36 subjects (13.8%) were seropositive against L. infantum with a statistically significant higher prevalence of positivity in older subjects (p=0.04). New is not always costly: evidence from online processing of topic and contrast in Japanese.

Two visual ERP experiments were conducted to investigate topic and contrast assigned by various cues such as discourse context, sentential position and marker during referential processing in Japanese. Experiment 1 showed that there was no N400-difference for new vs. given noun phrases (NPs) when the new NP was expected (contrastively focused) based on its preceding context and sentential position. Experiment 2 further revealed that the N400 for new NPs can be modulated by the NP’s contrastive meaning (exhausitivity) induced from the marker.
