Improved postural control after dynamic balance training in older overweight women

2010

Background and Aims: Many studies have reported a greater frequency of falls among older women than men under conditions which stress balance. Previously, we have found an improvement in static balance in older women with an increased support surface area and an equal load redistribution on both feet in response to a dynamic balance training protocol. The aim of the present study was to examine whether the same training program and body composition would have effects on the postural control of older overweight women. Methods: Ten healthy women (68.67 ± 5.50 years; 28.17 ± 3.35 BMI) participated in a five-week physical activity program. This included dynamic balance exercises such as heel-to…

Comparison of posturographic parameters between young taekwondo and tennis athletes

2018

[Purpose] Physical activity can influence the development of postural control and balance. Therefore, the aim of study was to use posturography assessment to compare balance control on the Romberg test between athletes in two very different sports, taekwondo and tennis. [Participants and Methods] Twenty-nine young athletes participated in the study, 11 forming the taekwondo group and 18 the tennis group. Posturography was performed using the FreeMed system (Sensor Medica). Between-group differences were evaluated using unpaired Student’s t-test. [Results] There was a significance between-group difference in the centre of pressure and the ellipse surface area with no between-group difference…

Cortical and Cerebellar Oscillatory Responses to Postural Instability in Parkinson's Disease

2021

Introduction: Posture and balance dysfunctions critically impair activities of daily living of patients with progressing Parkinson's disease (PD). However, the neural mechanisms underlying postural instability in PD are poorly understood, and specific therapies are lacking. Previous electrophysiological studies have shown distinct cortical oscillations with a significant contribution of the cerebellum during postural control tasks in healthy individuals. Methods: We investigated cortical and mid-cerebellar oscillatory activity via electroencephalography (EEG) during a postural control task in 10 PD patients with postural instability (PDPI+), 11 PD patients without postural instability (PDPI–…

Obesity Affects Postural Control in Middle Childhood and Adolescence but not in Early Childhood

2019

Introduction:Overweight/obese children have postural control differences compared with normal-weight children. Nevertheless, there are not studies that analyze the effect of obesity during the entire period comprised between childhood and adolescence. The objective of this study was to determine the differences in postural control between normal-weight and overweight/obese participants during early and middle childhood and adolescence.Methods:359 children were divided into six groups according to age and weight status. Each participant carried out one 30-s trial with eyes open (EO) and one 30-s trial with eyes closed (EC). Center of pressure signals were acquired using a Wii Balance Board. …

Study of postural control and body balance in subjects with Down syndrome

2020

Purpose. Body imbalance and poor postural control have negative impact on gait and may increase the risk of falling in healthy individuals as well as those with Down syndrome (DS). Since people with DS have lower physical levels than people who do not present this condition, the purpose of our research was to compare features of postural control and body balance between subjects affected by DS and a control sample. Methods. Participants enrolled were divided into the following two groups: A DS group (DSG; n = 22; 9 females and 13 males; age range: 16-36 years) and an age-matched control group (CG; n = 25; 11 females and 14 males; age range: 16-36 years). All participants were subjected to t…

Effects of Fatigue on Postural Sway and Electromyography Modulation in Young Expert Acrobatic Gymnasts and Healthy Non-trained Controls During Uniped…

2022

This study investigated whether expert acrobatic gymnasts respond differentially than their non-trained counterparts during a single-legged stance task performed before and after a protocol designed to induce fatigue in the ankle plantarflexor muscles in terms of (a) postural steadiness and (b) electromyography (EMG) activation. We hypothesized that neuromuscular adaptation due to training would lead to different behavior of center of pressure (COP) and EMG quantifiers after fatigue. Twenty eight female volunteers (aged 11 to 24 years) formed two groups: expert acrobatic gymnastics athletes (GYN, n = 14) and age-matched non-gymnasts [control (CTRL), n = 14]. Fatigue of the ankle plantarflex…

Characterization of postural control impairment in women with fibromyalgia

2018

[EN] The main goal of this cross-sectional study was to detect whether women with fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) have altered postural control and to study the sensory contribution to postural control. We also explored the possibility that self-induced anxiety and lower limb strength may be related to postural control. For this purpose, 129 women within an age range of 40 to 70 years were enrolled. Eighty of the enrolled women had FMS. Postural control variables, such as Ellipse, Root mean square (RMS) and Sample entropy (SampEn), in both directions (i.e. mediolateral and anteroposterior), were calculated under five different conditions. A force plate was used to register the center of pressur…

Altered postural control and stability in cirrhotic patients with minimal hepatic encephalopathy correlate with cognitive deficits

2017

Background & Aims: Cognitive dysfunction in cirrhotic patients with minimal hepatic encephalopathy (MHE) is associated with falls. Alterations in postural control and stability could contribute to increase falls risk in these patients. We aimed to assess whether postural control and direction-specific limits of stability are altered in cirrhotic patients with MHE compared to patients without MHE and controls. We also assessed if alterations in postural control correlate with neurological impairment and/or blood biomarkers. Methods: Posturography analysis, attention Stroop test and bimanual and visuo-motor coordination tests were performed in 18 controls, 19 patients with cirrhosis without M…

Sensory Reweighting During Bipedal Quiet Standing in Adolescents

2020

A cross-sectional, prospective, between-subjects design was used in this study to establish the differences in sensory reweighting of postural control among different ages during adolescence. A total of 153 adolescents (five age groups; 13–17 years old) performed bipedal standing in three sensory conditions (i.e., with visual restriction, vestibular disturbance, and proprioceptive disturbance). Center of pressure displacement signals were measured in mediolateral and anteroposterior directions to characterize reweighting in the sensory system in static postural control when sensory information is disturbed or restricted during adolescent growth. The results indicate a development of postura…
