Maximal and explosive force production capacity and balance performance in men of different ages
1999
A group of 32 healthy men (M) divided into three different age groups, i.e. M20 years [mean 21 (SD 1); n = 12], M40 [mean 40 (SD 2); n = 10] and M70 [mean 71 (SD 5); n = 10] volunteered as subjects for examination of maximal and explosive force production of leg extensor muscles in both isometric and dynamic actions (squat jump, SJ and counter movement jump, CMJ, and standing long-jump, SLJ). The balance test was performed on a force platform in both isometric and dynamic actions. Maximal bilateral isometric force value in M70 was lower (P < 0.001) than in M40 and as much as 46% lower (P < 0.001) than that recorded in M20 (P < 0.001). The maximal rate of force development (RFD) on the force…
Postural stability in subjects with whiplash injury symptoms: results of a pilot study
2014
Posturographic tests can be used to assess and confirm the body's imbalance in subjects with whiplash injury. Further studies with larger cohorts are necessary to confirm this pilot study. To verify through a posturographic exam the qualitative and quantitative alterations of postural stability in subjects with previous cervical trauma in comparison with healthy subjects.A total of 42 subjects were analysed for the study; 22 as the control group (NM) and 20 (WM) with a positive anamnesis of whiplash injury from 3 to 12 month from diagnosis through a force platform. Centre of pressure (CoP) movements of the two groups with their eyes open and closed were recorded.During the closed eye test, t…
Comparison of electronystagmography results with dynamic posturography findings in patients with vestibular schwannoma.
2007
Condition-5-score (C5S) and condition-6-score (C6S) of computerized dynamic platform posturography (CDPP) can detect the presence of a functional deficit of the lateral semicircular canal (and the superior vestibular nerve), irrespective of the central vestibular compensatory status, in vestibular schwannoma (VS) patients. To test whether CDPP findings differ between VS patients with and without asymmetry on caloric and/or rotational ENG studies. This was a retrospective review of 216 consecutive patients with VS. C5S and C6S of CDPP (Equitest) were compared among patients with normal caloric and rotational studies, patients with asymmetry on caloric studies and normal rotational studies, and…
Dynamic posturography findings predict balance status in vestibular schwannoma patients.
2007
OBJECTIVE To test whether condition 5 score (C5S) and condition 6 score (C6S) of the sensory organization test of computerized dynamic platform posturography (CDPP) differ between vestibular schwannoma (VS) patients with and without vestibular symptoms. STUDY DESIGN Retrospective review of prospectively collected data. SETTING Tertiary academic referral center. PATIENTS Two hundred and sixteen consecutive patients with a histological diagnosis of a VS (103 women; 113 men; age range, 18-78 years; median, 54 years) who had been preoperatively evaluated by CDPP. A hundred and twelve patients had a history of vertigo, dizziness, and/or imbalance, and 104 patients had neither present nor past ve…
Static posturography with dynamic tests. Usefulness of biomechanical parameters in assessing vestibular patients.
2012
Abstract Introduction and objective Posturography allows us in evaluating postural control. This study showed the posturographic parameters that were useful for assessing the functional ability to maintain balance in our sample of vestibular patients. Material and methods Of a total of 89 patients, 59 were healthy subjects and 30 had a peripheral vestibular disorder. The subjects were studied using the posturographic NedSVE/IBV system, combining static (Romberg) and dynamic (stability limits and rhythmic weight shifts) tests. We then compared the measurements found in the groups. Results Normal subjects showed significantly lower oscillations than our patients in all of the posturographic p…
Are postural responses to backward and forward perturbations processed by different neural circuits?
2013
Item does not contain fulltext Startle pathways may contribute to rapid accomplishment of postural stability. Here we investigate the possible influence of a startling auditory stimulus (SAS) on postural responses. We formulated four specific questions: (1) can a concurrent SAS shorten the onset of automatic postural responses?; and if so (2) is this effect different for forward versus backward perturbations?; (3) does this effect depend on prior knowledge of the perturbation direction?; and (4) is this effect different for low- and high-magnitude perturbations? Balance was perturbed in 11 healthy participants by a movable platform that suddenly translated forward or backward. Each particip…
Development of predictive models for the estimation of the probability of suffering fear of falling and other fall risk factors based on posturograph…
2016
Falls pose an important problem for older adults. Balance training is one of the main prevention strategies, but there is a lack of objective measurement methods that would allow the effectiveness of the treatments employed to be assessed. This study aimed to analyse the relationship between posturographic parameters and risk factors associated with falling, including the fear of falling (FoF). Forty-one healthy community-dwelling older adults were surveyed on their perception of problems considered to be fall risk factors. Balance measurement with posturography was performed. The relationships between risk factors and falls and risk factors and posturography were analysed by means of cross…
Comparison of posturographic parameters between young taekwondo and tennis athletes
2018
[Purpose] Physical activity can influence the development of postural control and balance. Therefore, the aim of study was to use posturography assessment to compare balance control on the Romberg test between athletes in two very different sports, taekwondo and tennis. [Participants and Methods] Twenty-nine young athletes participated in the study, 11 forming the taekwondo group and 18 the tennis group. Posturography was performed using the FreeMed system (Sensor Medica). Between-group differences were evaluated using unpaired Student’s t-test. [Results] There was a significance between-group difference in the centre of pressure and the ellipse surface area with no between-group difference…
Altered postural control and stability in cirrhotic patients with minimal hepatic encephalopathy correlate with cognitive deficits
2017
Background & Aims: Cognitive dysfunction in cirrhotic patients with minimal hepatic encephalopathy (MHE) is associated with falls. Alterations in postural control and stability could contribute to increase falls risk in these patients. We aimed to assess whether postural control and direction-specific limits of stability are altered in cirrhotic patients with MHE compared to patients without MHE and controls. We also assessed if alterations in postural control correlate with neurological impairment and/or blood biomarkers. Methods: Posturography analysis, attention Stroop test and bimanual and visuo-motor coordination tests were performed in 18 controls, 19 patients with cirrhosis without M…
