Decorated pottery study: Analysis of pigments by x-ray absorbance spectroscopy measurements

Characterization of pigments on decorated pottery fragments has been fully carried out by nondestructive x-ray absorbance spectroscopy (XAS). The samples were a series of pottery shards excavated from the archeological site of Caltagirone (Sicily, Italy), a well-known ceramic production center. Aesthetical criteria and morphological observations allowed us to attribute the samples to quite different historical periods, starting from the 18th century B.C. up to the 16th century A.D. An extensive time interval led us to suppose that different materials and techniques were used for the production of the ceramic paste and also for the preparation of pigments. Ceramics from Samshvilde (Georgia): A pilot archaeometric study

Abstract This archaeometric study deals with seven samples of prehistoric pottery and, for the first time in Georgian studies, thirteen samples of glazed medieval pottery. All specimens were collected at Samshvilde, the most remarkable archaeological complex in southern Georgia and believed to represent locally-manufactured products. Two additional samples of raw materials composed of clay, silt, and sand were collected near the site and used to compare composition. Archaeometric characterization of late Archaic ceramic from Erice (Sicily) aimed to provenance determination

A set of 20 ceramic samples was autoptically selected from the numerous findings recovered from the stratigraphic excavations of the late Archaic city walls of Erice (western Sicily), in order to be analyzed with archaeometric techniques for provenance determination. The excavations were recently carried out as part of a research project funded by the Freie Universiat Berlin and the Fritz Thyssen Foundation. Specifically, the ceramic material consists of tableware with a painted geometric decoration of presumed local/regional production, as well as apparently imported black-glazed pottery. AbstractAn ethnoarchaeometric approach has been followed to identify the textural and compositional characteristics of the ceramic pastes produced in ancient Iaitas/Ietas, an indigenous site located in western Sicily on Monte Iato, a few tens of kilometres from Palermo. Árguinas II (Segorbe, Castellón): un centro de producción cerámico ibérico

Diversas intervenciones arqueológicas realizadas en las últimas décadas en la zona de Segorbe (Castellón), han aportado numerosos hallazgos relacionados con yacimientos correspondientes al periodo ibérico. Entre ellos destaca el de Árguinas II, objeto de estudio en este artículo, que en base a los restos recogidos en sucesivas prospecciones permiten identificarlo como un centro alfarero ibérico cuyo momento de máxima producción se sitúa entre los ss. IV-III a.C. Algunos materiales sugieren una ocupación de la zona en época romana.
