Sižeta struktūra Dž. K. Roulingas romānā “Harijs Poters un Jauktasiņu princis”

2016

An innovative multi-analytical approach based on spectroscopic and electrochemical techniques to study a complex Roman amphorae collection

2020

Abstract An innovative multi-analytical approach for the classification of ancient pottery sherds was tested. Twenty Roman amphorae fragments belonging to different known typologies and twenty-seven unclassified ones from a complex Sagunto Archaeological Museum (Spain) collection were studied by multielement analysis (X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry), Fourier-transform near infrared spectroscopy and voltammetry of immobilized microparticles employing a minimal amount of sample. Chemometric analysis based on principal component analysis allowed the identification of most of the unclassified samples, proving the importance and reliability of th…

Intrasite Artefact Survey at Terravecchia di Cuti (Sicily)

2016

In this paper, we discuss the results of an artefact survey and a sampling collection in the indigenous settlement of Terravecchia di Cuti, in the chora of the Greek colony of Himera (Sicily). The whole area of the town was gridded with squares of 10x10 m to isolate functional areas and identify the most interesting zones for new archaeological samples. The survey was carried out in two fields (9400 m2), counting and recording all findings. Only diagnostic pottery and figured pottery, antefixes, loom weights, millstones and so on were collected. We can observe, analysing in detail our results for both fields, that functional areas could not be isolated, perhaps because the urban and social …

SEM–EDS ANALYSIS AS A RAPID TOOL FOR DISTINGUISHING CAMPANIAN A WARE AND SICILIAN IMITATIONS

2013

The aim of this work is to examine whether it is possible to find chemical markers that allow a distinction to be made between the imported black glossed ‘Campanian A’ and the Sicilian imitation (end of fourth to first century BC) of these productions by carrying out quantitative chemical microanalysis of the slip using the SEM–EDS technique. The efficiency of the proposed analytical method has been tested on a set of ceramic samples corresponding to Sicilian black gloss imitations whose ceramic body has already been characterized petrographically by thin-section microscopy and chemically by XRF. The analytical data point to Na2O as a suitable chemical marker to distinguish between original…

Budgeting soil erosion from floodplain sediments of the central Rhenish Slate Mountains (Westerwald), Germany

2011

The distribution, thickness and composition of the floodplain sediments in the valleys of the Gelbach (Lower Westerwald) and Große Nister (Upper Westerwald) depend on the occurrence of loessic periglacial cover beds in their catchments as well as on historical land use. The budget of floodplain sedimentation was derived from a study of the floodloams underlying the monastery garden of Marienstatt, a village in the Große Nister valley. From the study of two occupation levels, pottery shards and radiocarbon dating, 55% of the floodloam can be attributed to the Modern period (younger than c. AD 1450). From the radiocarbon age of a charcoal fragment extracted from the base of the floodloam at …

Integrated prototyping and rendering system for the display of ceramic finds

2017

The project, carried out in collaboration between the Department of Architecture of Palermo and the Archaeological Museum Antonino Salinas of Palermo, proposes a system of integration and reconstruction of ceramic artefacts, using modeling, 3D printing and rendering processes for an integrated museum exhibition system, which the viewers can observe the fragment nearing the re-reconstructed fragment that reconstructs the original morphology and an interactive digital model in which the viewers can also observe the metric aspect and, where present, the decorative apparatus.

Loeb Classical Library, Hippocrates, volume X, Edited and Translated by P. Potter.

2015

2009

The aim of this paper is to provide well-stated petrographic reference groups for the recognition of several Sicilian and Spanish Phoenician-Punic production centres in order to facilitate an instrument of further objective support for amphorae provenance. This instrument is based on the crosschecking between data provided by typological studies and the thinsection analysis of amphorae fabrics. It is worth noting that this is only a first step within the framework of a larger research project focused in the creation of an Atlas of Phoenician and Punic Amphorae in the Western Mediterranean including both archaeological and petrographic data. In this context a systematical work on the known p…

After African trades: changing in Cignana landscape between Late Antiquity and Medieval age

2017

International audience; In many parts of Sicily, the Late Antiquity represents a period of strong transformation in settlement patterns and landscapes. These changes occur also on an area 20 km SE from Agrigento, on the southern coast of the island: this is the territory around the imperial villa of Cignana (2nd-3th century AD), where the University of Palermo carried out some surveys from 2007. During the surveys more than 30 new topographic units of Late Antiquity were detected: some of them are big and accurately dated, others are small and difficult to interpret. Usually, they have located in easily accessible places, close to springs and the road system. Principally African pottery all…
