The subject of the article, which makes reference to pugna spiritualis - the topos that was popular in the old literature and to speculum - the characteristic form of writing in the 16* century, is discussed on the basis of selected sermons by Fabian Birkowski (devoted to annual holidays) and his Latin orations about saints. The model of knighthood that was defined by the baroque preacher as miles pauperculus is presented through the biographies of holly monks. This paper aims the analysis of the living conditions of a sample of household, residing at a quarter of Palermo’s historic city centre so that it is an effective instrument for politicians to improve the quality of life of the residents. The definition of “poverty” is strongly related to what stated in studies about quality of life; actually, it does not depend only on expenditure capability: in fact, the employment status of the householder and the family asset are relevant as well. This study aims to provide some empirical explanations for the gaps in ICT diffusion between industrialized countries, especially European countries vis-à-vis the United States. The panel data cover eleven OECD countries: Austria, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, Spain, the United Kingdom and the United States. These annual macroeconomic data span the 1981-2005 period.The analysis provides some original results: (i) the impact on ICT diffusion of the level of education and market rigidities has changed over time. Tout en reprenant les enseignements de travaux de recherche conduits en France au sujet de la pauvreté et de l’intervention sociale en milieu agricole et rural, ce texte montre les conditions d’élaboration de savoirs s’appuyant sur des connaissances issues des sciences humaines et sociales et sur des observations conduites par et avec des professionnels de l’action sociale. Au-delà du repérage de situations qui caractérisent les espaces ruraux, il souligne l’apport de différentes méthodes d’investigation pour affiner le regard sur les conditions de vie des plus pauvres, les capacités d’adaptation dont ils disposent et les dispositifs qui leur sont destinés.

The sustainability of European Long-Term Care systems faces the demographic and socio-economic circumstances, mainly the increasing ageing of the population, with its chronic disease conditions, and the simultaneous economic general crises, exacerbated by the recent COVID-19 pandemic. Beyond the increase in general rate of relative poverty, there is a higher risk of poverty among elderly and families in a high demand of care, especially if situations of Activities Daily Living (ADL) disability are present.
