Neural-level associations of non-verbal pragmatic comprehension in young Finnish autistic adults

This video-based study examines the pragmatic non-verbal comprehension skills and corresponding neural-level findings in young Finnish autistic adults, and controls. Items from the Assessment Battery of Communication (ABaCo) were chosen to evaluate the comprehension of non-verbal communication. Inter-subject correlation (ISC) analysis of the functional magnetic resonance imaging data was used to reveal the synchrony of brain activation across participants during the viewing of pragmatically complex scenes of ABaCo videos. Kandidaatin tutkielmani käsittelee Jane Austenin rakastettua romaania Ylpeyttä ja Ennakkoluuloa (Pride and Prejudice) ja erityisesti siinä esiintyvää sivuhahmoa, Mr Collinsia. Tavoitteeni oli selvittää, miksi sekä lukijat että kirjassa olevat hahmot yleisesti pitävät kyseistä hahmoa samanaikaisesti sietämättömänä sekä huvittavana. Keskityin siis löytämään mahdollisia kohteliaisuusrikkomuksia sekä niiden seurauksia Mr Collinsin ja muiden hahmojen dialogeista. Nämä rikkomukset selittävät hahmon huonon vastaanoton. The aim of this research is to analyze Kevin J. Vanhoozer’s theory of creative action as a hermeneutical viewpoint in the light of learning and ethical development. The method used in this research is systematic analysis. Vanhoozer’s understanding of action differs strongly from that of Marx and of Dewey. By turning to philosophical hermeneutics he finds a way through Aristotle’s drama theory where creative action is a basis for the Gadamerian horizon, but instead of fusing the horizons Vanhoozer sees it as the viewpoint of Bakhtinian outsider, which in turn provides an opportunity to critique the surrounding culture. Confronting blackface : Stancetaking in the Dutch Black Pete debate

ecently, the Netherlands witnessed an agitated discussion over Black Pete, a blackface character associated with the Saint Nicholas festival. This paper analyzes a televised panel interview discussing a possible court ban of public Nicholas festivities, and demonstrates that participants not only disagree over the racist nature of the blackface character but also over the terms of the debate itself. Drawing on recent sociolinguistic work on stancetaking, it traces how panelists ‘laminate’ the interview’s participation framework by embedding their assessments of Black Pete in contrasting dialogical fields.
