Ethics in biodiversity conservation : The meaning and importance of pluralism

2022

Addressing the global extent of the current biodiversity crisis requires engaging with the existence of multiple equally legitimate values, but also with diverse ethical perspectives underpinning conceptions of right and wrong actions. However, western monist positions have mostly explicitly or implicitly directed conservation strategies by defining the space of legitimate arguments, overlooking solutions that do not fit neatly the chosen approaches. As ignoring diverse ethical positions leads to injustices and reduces the potential of conserving biodiversity, there is a need to recognise and navigate the ethical landscape. Ethical pluralism may provide opportunities to do so. However, the …

John Dewey’s notion of social intelligence

2019

This chapter focuses on Deweyan understanding of intelligence as fundamentally social. This understanding differs from the common conceptions of intelligence as a feature of an isolated individual and/or as a possession of an elite. Starting with a look at the relevance of reconceptualizing intelligence, the chapter continues by describing how, according to Dewey’s theory, intelligence forms, manifests and cumulates in interactions. It then discusses the presumable implications of Dewey’s theory in terms of the contextuality of intelligent action, the importance of taking relevant experience-based information into account, the use of a particular method of inquiry, and modification of educa…

Etiikan ja metafysiikan yhteydestä

2008

Computer game as a pragmatic concept : ideas, meanings, and culture

2020

This article discusses the ‘computer game’ as a pragmatic concept. A dual nature of the computer game as both a pragmatic idea and a pragmatic meaning is introduced. Practical meanings of the computer game correspond with the concrete effects that engaging with computer games produces in an individual. Practical ideas of the computer game correspond with the subjectively constituted conceptual families concerning the computer game’s assumed practical meaning. Individual computer games can be considered flat or round depending on the range of their practical meanings. Thus, the article contributes to the study of cultural objects by offering a framework for examining the evolution and existe…

Practices and habits of citizenship and learning

2019

This chapter discusses the volume’s theoretical underpinnings, which are derived from philosophical pragmatism. One of the key ideas of this research project has been to bring philosophical and empirical research into dialogue by following the principles of pragmatism. Pragmatism sees the relationship between theory and practice as bidirectional: all theories must be subjected to revision in light of practice but, at the same time, a crucial role of theories is to critique current practices. At the level of methodology this implies that theorizing must be tied to what people do. The second central feature of pragmatism is that human experience is a crucial starting point of inquiry; pragmat…

Introduction

2020

This chapter provides a general introduction to the edited volume of Citizenship Practices in East Africa: Perspectives from Philosophical Pragmatism. It contextualizes the contribution of the book within three ongoing discussions: first, on the role of a normative starting point in development research; second, on the principle of philosophical pragmatism of starting theorizing from human practices; and third, on the efforts to conceptualize citizenship on the basis of everyday experiences. The chapter sets the main objectives of the book as to articulate a concept of citizenship based on philosophical pragmatism, to explore a variety of practices in which citizenship habits are acquired a…

Practices of Citizenship in East Africa : Perspectives from Philosophical Pragmatism

2020

Practices of Citizenship in East Africa uses insights from philosophical pragmatism to explore how to strengthen citizenship within developing countries. Using a bottom-up approach, the book investigates the various everyday practices in which citizenship habits are formed and reformulated. In particular, the book reflects on the challenges of implementing the ideals of transformative and critical learning in the attempts to promote active citizenship. Drawing on extensive empirical research from rural Uganda and Tanzania and bringing forward the voices of African researchers and academics, the book highlights the importance of context in defining how habits and practices of citizenship are…
