In-Depth Characterization of Viral Isolates from Plasma and Cells Compared with Plasma Circulating Quasispecies in Early HIV-1 Infection

2012

Background The use of in vitro models to unravel the phenotypic characteristics of circulating viral variants is key to understanding HIV-1 pathogenesis but limited by the availability of primary viral isolates from biological samples. However, overall in vivo genetic variability of HIV-1 within a subject may not be reflected in the viable viral population obtained after isolation. Although several studies have tried to determine whether viral populations expanded in vitro are representative of in vivo findings, the answer remains unclear due to the reduced number of clonal sequences analyzed or samples compared. In order to overcome previous experimental limitations, here we applied Deep P…

Relationship between perception of malocclusion and the psychological impact of dental aesthetics in university students.

2014

Introduction and Objectives: The objectives were to assess the relationship between perceived smile aesthetics and perceived psychological impact as measured by the Psychosocial Impact of Dental Aesthetics Questionnaire (PIDAQ), and their own perception of it using the Aesthetic Component of the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN-AC) and a Visual Analog Scale (VAS); relate the IOTN-AC and VAS to the PIDAQ; and study the predictive capacity of the scales for psychological impact. Material and Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in 447 college students in Spain and Portugal (average age 20.4 years, 33.1% men and 66.9% women). The online self-completed surveys used the recent…

Low levels of WWOX protein immunoexpression correlate with tumour grade and a less favourable outcome in patients with urinary bladder tumours

2008

Aims:  To correlate the immunohistochemical detection of WWOX with histological measures and disease progression within the whole spectrum of urothelial bladder neoplasms. Methods and results:  One hundred and one patients with primary bladder tumours were retrospectively analysed. Immunohistochemically, a polyclonal antibody was utilized and the level of WWOX protein expression was analysed by using a combined score system based on intensity of the reaction and percentage of immunoreactive tumour cells. WWOX protein expression was consistently expressed in non-neoplastic urothelium, whereas a progressive loss of immunoreactivity was observed as tumour grade and stage increased (P < 0.05). …

Practical thresholds to distinguish erosive and rill rainfall events

2019

Abstract In this paper, 1017 rainfall events from 2008 to 2017 are used to identify the rainfall threshold that produces upland erosion at the Masse (central Italy) and Sparacia (southern Italy) experimental stations. The rainfall events are classified into three classes: non-erosive, interrill-only and rill. The threshold values for separating as correctly as possible the erosive rains (case I) and the rill rains (case II) are derived solely from the hyetograph. Each threshold value is obtained by imposing that the long-term erosivity of the events above the threshold is equal to the long-term erosivity of all erosive events (case I) or only rill events (case II). The performances of selec…

Relations between enabling skills and reading comprehension: a follow-up study of Latvian students from first to second grade.

2004

Sprugevica, I. & Hoien, T. (2004). Relations between enabling skills and reading comprehension: A follow-up study of Latvian students from first to second grade. Scandinavian Journal of Psychology, 45, 115–122. In order to examine the relationships among various phonological skills and reading comprehension, Latvian children were followed from grade 1 to grade 2 and were tested with a battery of phonological, word reading, and reading comprehension tasks. A principal component analysis of the phonological tasks revealed three salient factors: a phonemic awareness factor, a rapid naming factor, and a short-term memory factor. In order to analyze the relationship between various phonological …

Predictive Chaos Control for the 1D-map of Action Potential Duration

2016

International audience; In the present work, a nonlinear control method namely predictive controlis investigated. The proposed method allows stabilizing unstable period-1 rhythm.Using mathematical analysis and computer simulations, we show that this methodcan be used to control chaotic behavior or pathological rhythms. As example, theresults are illustrated in the case of the 1D-map action potential duration (APDi+1)which modelizes the cardiac action potential duration as the function of the previousone (APDi).

A Neural Network Meta-Model and its Application for Manufacturing

2015

International audience; Manufacturing generates a vast amount of data both from operations and simulation. Extracting appropriate information from this data can provide insights to increase a manufacturer's competitive advantage through improved sustainability, productivity, and flexibility of their operations. Manufacturers, as well as other industries, have successfully applied a promising statistical learning technique, called neural networks (NNs), to extract meaningful information from large data sets, so called big data. However, the application of NN to manufacturing problems remains limited because it involves the specialized skills of a data scientist. This paper introduces an appr…

Innovative tools to diagnose the impact of land use practices on soil microbial communities

2018

International audience; Preservation and sustainable use of soil biological communities represent major challenges in the current agroecological context. Indeed, most of soil ecosystem services results from biological functions particularly driven by taxonomic and functional assemblages of microbiological communities (i.e. nutrient cycling, soil aggregation, depollution, etc.). Consequently, soil microbial communities are logical candidates as effective indicators of soil quality and sustainability. But, good biological indicators must be associated with references that encompass an operating range of measured values that allow performing the desired diagnosis. Even if numerous studies have…
