Prognostic value of exercise myocardial scintigraphy in patients with coronary chronic total occlusions.

2010

Objectives: To evaluate the prognostic value of exercise myocardial scintigraphy in patients undergoing incomplete revascularization by means of percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) with at least a residual chronic total occlusion (CTO) left untreated. Methods: Of 569 consecutive patients with multivessel disease undergoing myocardial scintigraphy after incomplete revascularization by PCI between March 1997 and December 2004, 126 (79% male, 64 ± 10 years) with ≥ 1 residual CTO fulfilled the eligibility criteria and entered in the study. Hard events defined as cardiac death and myocardial infarction, soft events defined as incidence of unstable angina and PCI procedures, and their compos…

Myocardial Mass Corrected CMR Feature Tracking-Based Strain Ratios are Different in Pathologies With Increased Myocardial Mass

2020

Acute myocarditis (AM) and hypertensive heart disease (HHD) have different pathophysiological backgrounds, thus potentially showing distinct patterns of altered myocardial deformation. Therefore, CMR left ventricular (LV) feature tracking (FT)- based strain parameters were indexed to myocardial mass index (LVMi) in order to evaluate potential additional value in the differentiation among AM, HHD, and healthy volunteers (HV) compared to non-indexed conventional strain.Patients with AM (n = 43) and HHD (n = 28) underwent CMR at 3T. 61 HV served as controls. Cine imaging-based FT-strain analysis was performed and natural strain (nStrain) values were evaluated for gender and age specific differ…

Right ventricular strain assessment by cardiovascular magnetic resonance myocardial feature tracking allows optimized risk stratification in Takotsub…

2018

Background A substantial number of patients with Takotsubo syndrome (TTS) exhibit right ventricular (RV) dysfunction which has been associated with adverse outcome. The aim of this study was to assess the clinical and prognostic value of RV myocardial strain in TTS using cardiovascular magnetic resonance myocardial feature tracking (CMR-FT). Methods CMR-FT was performed in a core laboratory to determine RV longitudinal strain in 134 TTS patients undergoing CMR in median 2 days after admission to 2 experienced centers. For comparison, RV involvement was evaluated by sole visual assessment concerning RV contraction abnormalities. Both approaches were analyzed regarding their long-term prognos…

Session-RPE for quantifying load of different youth taekwondo training sessions.

2016

BACKGROUND: The session rating of perceived exertion (session-RPE) proved to be a valuable method to quantify the internal training load (ITL) in taekwondo. However, no study validated this method in youth taekwondo athletes performing different training sessions. Thus this study aimed at evaluating the reliability of the session-RPE to monitor the ITL of prepubescent taekwondo athletes during pre-competitive (PC) and competitive (C) training sessions. METHODS: Five female (age: 12.0±0.7 y; height: 1.54±0.08 m; body mass: 48.8±7.3 kg) and four male (age: 12.0±0.8 yrs; height: 1.55±0.07 m; body mass: 47.3±5.3 kg) taekwondo athletes were monitored during 100 individual sessions (PC: N.=33; C:…

Results of an Observational Cohort Study of Hyperuricemia as a Predictor of Poor Physical Performance in the Elderly

2017

Objective: Hyperuricemia is frequent in older people and associated with several medical conditions. The relationship between hyperuricemia and physical performance is limited. We aimed to investigate the association between hyperuricemia and physical performance over a 4.4-year followup in the elderly. Methods: A total of 1,904 community-dwelling older participants were followed for a mean of 4.4 years. Hyperuricemia at baseline was defined using serum uric acid concentrations ≥6 and ≥7 mg/dl for women and men, respectively. Objective physical performance tests measured included the Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB), 4-meter gait speed, chair-stands time, leg extension and flexion,…

Glutathione Peroxidase-1 Activity, Atherosclerotic Burden, and Cardiovascular Prognosis

2007

Recent findings suggest that erythrocyte intracellular glutathione peroxidase-1 (GPX-1) activity is related inversely to future cardiovascular events. The aim of this study is to evaluate the association of GPX-1 activity to extent of atherosclerosis, as well as its long-term prognosis in context with atherosclerotic burden. In a prospective study, we included 508 patients before coronary angiography. Atherosclerosis of carotid and leg arteries was documented using sonographic methods. Blood samples were drawn after an overnight fasting period, and GPX-1 activity was determined in washed erythrocytes. GPX-1 activity tended to decrease with increasing numbers of atherosclerotic vascular beds…

Risk Factors for Anastomotic Leak After Colon Resection for Cancer

2015

To determine pre-/intraoperative risk factors for anastomotic leak after colon resection for cancer and to create a practical instrument for predicting anastomotic leak risk.Anastomotic leak is still the most dreaded complication in colorectal surgery. Many risk factors have been identified to date, but multicentric prospective studies on anastomotic leak after colon resection are lacking.Fifty-two hospitals participated in this prospective, observational study. Data of 3193 patients, operated for colon cancer with primary anastomosis without stoma, were included in a prospective online database (September 2011-September 2012). Forty-two pre-/intraoperative variables, related to patient, tu…

Sum of ST-segment elevations on admission electrocardiograms in acute myocardial infarction predicts left ventricular dilation.

1996

In summary, ST-segment elevations on the admission electrocardiogram not only diagnose acute myocardial infarction but also provide predictive information with respect to developing infarct size and left ventricular remodeling as well as survival.

No changes in mood with the seasons: observations in 3000 chronic pain patients.

1999

Objective Seasonal affective disorder (SAD) and the theory of the effect of light on depression have gained some popularity in recent years. Research on epidemiology is largely based on retrospective measures asking explicitly for the experience of seasonal variations. Those measures have a low positive predictive value and do not enable us to distinguish between experience and belief. Method A consecutive sample of chronic pain patients filled out a depression questionnaire (CES-D) routinely as part of the diagnostic interview on becoming in-patients at a Pain Clinic in Mainz during a 5-year period. Results No support for seasonality or light effects was found. Conclusion The effect of lig…

Inhibition and Switching in Healthy Aging: A Longitudinal Study

2016

AbstractObjectives: Discrepant findings of age-related effects between cross-sectional and longitudinal studies on executive function (EF) have been described across different studies. The aim of the present study was to examine longitudinal age effects on inhibition and switching, two key subfunctions of EF, calculated from results on the Color Word Interference Test (CWIT). Methods: One hundred twenty-three healthy aging individuals (average age 61.4 years; 67% women) performed the CWIT up to three times, over a period of more than 6 years. Measures of inhibition, switching, and combined inhibition and switching were analyzed. A longitudinal linear mixed effects models analysis was run in…
