Urinary tract infections in children: EAU/ESPU guidelines.
2015
Context: In 30% of children with urinary tract anomalies, urinary tract infection (UTI) can be the first sign. Failure to identify patients at risk can result in damage to the upper urinary tract. Objective: To provide recommendations for the diagnosis, treatment, and imaging of children presenting with UTI.Evidence acquisition: The recommendations were developed after a review of the literature and a search of PubMed and Embase. A consensus decision was adopted when evidence was low.Evidence synthesis: UTIs are classified according to site, episode, symptoms, and complicating factors. For acute treatment, site and severity are the most important. Urine sampling by suprapubic aspiration or c…
Basis of predictive mycology.
2005
Abstract For over 20 years, predictive microbiology focused on food-pathogenic bacteria. Few studies concerned modelling fungal development. On one hand, most of food mycologists are not familiar with modelling techniques; on the other hand, people involved in modelling are developing tools dedicated to bacteria. Therefore, there is a tendency to extend the use of models that were developed for bacteria to moulds. However, some mould specificities should be taken into account. The use of specific models for predicting germination and growth of fungi was advocated previously [ Dantigny, P., Guilmart, A., Bensoussan, M., 2003. Basis of predictive mycology. In Proceedings of the 4th Internatio…
Applying the Bass model to pharmaceuticals in emerging markets
2014
Albeit the Bass model was not designed for predicting sales of newly launched drugs, pharmaceutical companies commonly use it for this purpose, mainly because of its good predictive power. Empirical experience, however, mainly refers to mature markets and it is unclear how the model behaves in emerging markets. We try to fill this gap in the literature by comparing the estimation results of the Bass model between emerging markets and mature markets in a big dataset including more than 5,000 new launches from different countries. Our results show a good performance of the model in emerging markets. Compared to mature markets the estimated parameters on average are the same, but there is a h…
Forecasting the Equity Risk Premium in the European Monetary Union
2018
This article examines the performance of several variables that could be good predictors of the equity risk premium in the European Monetary Union for a period that spans from 2000 to 2015. In-sample, technical indicators display predictive power, matching or exceeding that of traditional economic forecasting variables. We also find consistent results in the fact that combining information from technical and economic variables improves equity risk premium forecasts, compared to using these variables alone. Nevertheless, out-of-sample exercises do not confirm in-sample results. Economic predictors show stronger out-of-sample forecasting ability than technical indicators, and apart from volum…
Study of Snowboard Sandwich Structures
2005
The aim of the present research is to extend the knowledge of mechanical properties both on single components and on complete structure employed for snowboard. Flexural and torsion tests are performed to acquire important comparison parameters between snowboard sandwich structures that differ for the core material employed (wood, PVC foam core). A simplified FEM model is proposed to simulate the flexural tests of the sandwich structure showing good predictive capability.
Predictive dead time controller for GaN-based boost converters
2017
A dynamic dead time controller is presented, specifically intended to operate in synchronous boost converters based on GaN field-effect transistor switches. These transistors have a reduced stored charge with respect to silicon metal–oxide–semiconductor field-effect transistors with similar breakdown voltage and series resistance, and can operate at higher frequencies with reduced switching losses. On the other hand, the voltage drop in reverse conduction is typically more than doubled with respect to silicon devices resulting in relevant power losses during the free-wheeling phases. Therefore, dynamic control of dead time can be profitably applied even in converters operating in the tens o…
A simplified predictive control of constrained Markov jump system with mixed uncertainties
2014
Published version of an article in the journal: Abstract and Applied Analysis. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1155/2014/475808 Open Access A simplified model predictive control algorithm is designed for discrete-time Markov jump systems with mixed uncertainties. The mixed uncertainties include model polytope uncertainty and partly unknown transition probability. The simplified algorithm involves finite steps. Firstly, in the previous steps, a simplified mode-dependent predictive controller is presented to drive the state to the neighbor area around the origin. Then the trajectory of states is driven as expected to the origin by the final-step mode-independent pre…
TOPS-MODE approach for the prediction of blood-brain barrier permeation.
2004
The blood-brain barrier permeation has been investigated by using a topological substructural molecular design approach (TOPS-MODE). A linear regression model was developed to predict the in vivo blood-brain partitioning coefficient on a data set of 119 compounds, treated as the logarithm of the blood-brain concentration ratio. The final model explained the 70% of the variance and it was validated through the use of an external validation set (33 compounds of the 119, MAE = 0.33), a leave-one-out crossvalidation (q(2) = 0.65, S(press) = 0.43), fivefold full crossvalidation (removing 28 compounds in each cycle, MAE = 33, RMSE = 0.43) and the prediction of +/- values for an external test set …
Independent Validation of Sepsis Index for Sepsis Screening in the Emergency Department
2021
(1) Background: The early detection of sepsis is still challenging, and there is an urgent need for biomarkers that could identify patients at a high risk of developing it. We recently developed an index, namely the Sepsis Index (SI), based on the combination of two CBC parameters: monocyte distribution width (MDW) and mean monocyte volume (MMV). In this study, we sought to independently validate the performance of SI as a tool for the early detection of patients at a high risk of sepsis in the Emergency Department (ED). (2) Methods: We enrolled all consecutive patients attending the ED with a request of the CBC. MDW and MMV were measured on samples collected in K3-EDTA tubes on the UniCel …
CD28, a marker associated with tumoral expansion in multiple myeloma
1998
International audience; CD28 expression was thoroughly investigated on plasma cells of monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance, multiple myeloma (MM), and human myeloma cell lines. CD28+ plasma cells were detected in 19% of 31 monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance, 41% of 116 MM, and 100% of 13 human myeloma cell lines. CD28+ myeloma cells were detected in 21 of 79 (26%) MM cases at diagnosis, 13 of 22 (59%) at medullary relapse (P < 0.009), and 14 of 15 (93%) at extramedullary relapse (P = 0.05), including 10 of 10 (100%) secondary plasma cell leukemias (P = 0.05). Serial studies in individual patients confirmed the emergence of CD28+ myeloma cells with tumoral expa…
