A critical step in multiple criteria optimization is setting the preferences for all the criteria under consideration. Several methodologies have been proposed to compute the relative priority of criteria when preference relations can be expressed either by ordinal or by cardinal information. The analytic hierarchy process introduces relative priority levels and cardinal preferences. Lexicographical orders combine both ordinal and cardinal preferences and present the additional difficulty of establishing strict priority levels. In this paper, we discuss the idea of incorporating preference information into evolutionary multi-objective optimization and propose a preference-based evolutionary approach that can be used as an integral part of an interactive algorithm. One algorithm is proposed in the paper. At each iteration, the decision maker is asked to give preference information in terms of his or her reference point consisting of desirable aspiration levels for objective functions. Malignant melanoma is potentially life-threatening but in most cases curable if detected early. Willingness to pay (WTP) is a preference-based construct that reflects burden of disease by assessment of the monetary value for a hypothetical cure from disease. Since WTP (directly as total amount of money) has not been assessed so far in patients with low risk melanoma, it was interesting to gain insights in this patient population and then, in a second step, compare it directly with the WTP of their treating dermato-oncologists. Even for parasitoids with a wide host range, not all host species are equally suitable, and host qualityoften depends on the plant the host feeds on. We compared oviposition choice and offspring perfor-mance of a generalist pupal parasitoid,Pteromalus apum(Retzius) (Hymenoptera: Pteromalidae), ontwo congeneric hosts reared on two plant species under field and laboratory conditions. The plantscontain defensive iridoid glycosides that are sequestered by the hosts. Cost-reducing R&D activities are examined in the context of a retail banking sector where some entities exhibit an expense preference. The results reveal that the effects from R&D interact with the effects in the previous literature in shaping the equilibrium configuration.
A Methodology for Solving the Multiple Criteria Macroeconomic Policy Problem

In this paper we review the results of our research on using interactive multiple criteria optimization methods for solving macroeconomic policy problems in Finland. An existing econometric model describing the interrelationships between different variables and sectors of the economy is used. In addition, the current status of the implementation work is reported and some possibilities for future research are discussed.

Abstract This paper analyzes the learning behavior of a risk-averse agent. We find two conflicting effects in the experimental behavior: a stronger preference for the ex post reduction in uncertainty, but ex ante the returns to information are more uncertain.
