Heterogeneous presentation of caspr2 antibody‐associated peripheral neuropathy – A case series

2019

Contactin-associated protein 2-like (caspr2) antibodies have been discovered recently. Since then a multitude of patients with caspr2 antibodies presenting with different neurological symptoms have been reported. Here, we describe three patients with caspr2 antibodies with different types of pain/no pain in combination with peripheral neuropathy. The first patient, a 33-year-old woman, presented with erythromelalgia-like pain and autonomic symptoms; the second patient, a 58-year-old man, with paresthesia and pain while walking together with signs of peripheral motor neuron hyperexcitability in combination with optic neuritis, and the third patient, a 74-year-old man, without any pain but wi…

Oro-facial aspects of leprosy : report of two cases with literature review

2009

Leprosy is a chronic infectious disease affecting primarily the skin, peripheral nerves, respiratory system and the eyes. Leprosy induces various types of clinical presentation affecting the patient´s immune response. Cellmediated immunity is considered to be the crucial defence against the disease and the magnitude of this immunity defines the extent of the disease. The article presents two case reports of manifestations of leprosy in the oro-facial region, with a brief review of various other important oro-facial manifestations of leprosy. The first report deals with granulomatous nodules in the palate while the second report presents bilateral facial palsy in leprosy patients. Both the r…

Use of Bichat's buccal fat pad for the sealing of orosinusal communications. A presentation of 8 cases.

2011

Objectives: To determine the efficacy of the pediculate flap with the buccal fat pad in the sealing of orosinusal communications, describe the surgical technique used, and report the main complications. Patients and method: A retrospective study was made of 8 patients seen in the Service of Oral Surgery of the University of Barcelona Dental Clinic (Spain) for the treatment of orosinusal communications between the years 2007 and 2009. In all cases a pediculate flap with the buccal fat pad was used to solve the problem. Results: All of the orosinusal communications were successfully resolved with this technique. The immediate postoperative complications were pain (37.5%), inflammation (37.5%)…

Trochlear palsies caused by isolated trochlear schwannomas.

2010

To describe clinical features and management of 4 patients suffering from unilateral superior oblique palsies due to MRI-documented trochlear nerve schwannomas.Chart reviews of 4 patients seen at the departments of ophthalmogy and neurology at the University of Mainz. All four patients were male, aged 36 to 72 years at initial presentation. None suffered from neurofibromatosis. The history of double vision prior presentation was 9 months to 13 years, follow-up time was 9 to 156 months. Two patients didn't receive any intervention: one remained stable over the follow-up time of 9 months. In patient #2, fourth nerve palsy was diagnosed 13 years prior to confirmation of a trochlear schwannoma b…

Physical activity and depression: a large cross-sectional, population-based study across 36 low- and middle-income countries

2016

Objective: Physical activity (PA) is good for health, yet several small-scale studies have suggested that depression is associated with low PA. A paucity of nationally representative studies investigating this relationship exists, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). This study explored the global association of PA with depression and its mediating factors. Method: Participants from 36 LMICs from the World Health Survey were included. Multivariable logistic regression analyses were undertaken exploring the relationship between PA and depression. Results: Across 178 867 people (mean ± SD age = 36.2 ± 13.5 years; 49.9% male), the prevalence of depression and the prevalenc…

Frontoparietal cortex and cerebellum contribution to the update of actual and mental motor performance during the day

2016

AbstractActual and imagined movement speed increases from early morning until mid-afternoon. Here, we investigated the neural correlates of these daily changes. Fifteen subjects performed actual and imagined right finger opposition movement sequences at 8 am and 2 pm. Both actual and imagined movements were significantly faster at 2 pm than 8 am. In the morning, actual movements significantly activated the left primary somatosensory and motor areas, and bilaterally the cerebellum; in the afternoon activations were similar but reduced. Contrast analysis revealed greater activity in the cerebellum, the left primary sensorimotor cortex and parietal lobe in the morning than in the afternoon. Im…

Predictors of cardiovascular magnetic resonance-derived microvascular obstruction on patient admission in STEMI

2010

Early stratification of patients according to the risk for developing microvascular obstruction (MVO) after ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) is desirable. We aimed to identify predictors of cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR)-derived MVO from clinical+ECG, laboratory and angiographic parameters available on admission.Characteristics available on admission were documented in 97 STEMI patients referred for primary angioplasty. MVO was determined using contrast-enhanced CMR.MVO was present in 44 patients (45%). The C-statistic for predicting MVO was: clinical+ECG (.832), laboratory (.743), and angiographic parameters (.669). Adding laboratory to clinical+ECG information d…

Rationale, design and baseline characteristics of the MyoVasc study: A prospective cohort study investigating development and progression of heart fa…

2020

Abstract Background Heart failure (HF) is a poly-aetiological syndrome with large heterogeneity regarding clinical presentation, pathophysiology, clinical outcome and response to therapy. The MyoVasc study (NCT04064450) is an epidemiological cohort study investigating the development and progression of HF. Methods The primary objective of the study is (a) to improve the understanding of the pathomechanisms of HF across the full spectrum of clinical presentation, (b) to investigate the current clinical classifications of HF, and (c) to identify and characterize homogeneous subgroups regarding disease development using a systems-oriented approach. Worsening of HF, that is, the composite of tr…
