Although French learners studying at BTS level at the National School of Dairy Industry and Biotechnologies (ENILBio) in Poligny have studied English as a second language for several years, they often have difficulty not only understanding it, but more importantly speaking it. As a teacher, it is a problem I am faced with daily and to which I haven’t been able to find explanations or solutions. The aim of this research is to explore the reasons that explain why students often feel embarrassed when they have to speak the language in and outside school, and to question their own practices and representations. This work aims at understanding why BTS students don’t speak English – or speak it li…

Remarks on Infinite-Dimensional Representations of the Heisenberg Algebra
2017
Infinite-dimensional representations of Lie algebras necessarily invoke the theory of unbounded operator algebras. Starting with the familiar example of the Heisenberg Lie algebra, we sketch the essential features of this interaction, distinguishing in particular the cases of integrable and nonintegrable representations. While integrable representations are well understood, nonintegrable representations are quite mysterious objects. We present here a short and didactical-minded overview of the subject.

Education and the belief in meritocracy
2008
This study aims at measuring empirically the belief in meritocracy and analyzing the impact of education on this belief. The research is structured in three parts: – Measuring the hold and the spread of the idea of an educational meritocracy. – Assessing the perceived legitimacy of educational meritocracy – Analyzing the determinants of the belief in meritocracy, especially the schooling effect. Three different types of empirical materials have been used: (1) data from the International Social Survey Program 1999 (Social Inequality (III)), (2) an original survey conducted among students in different courses of study (first year of higher education) in the academy of Caen, and (3) interviews…

2018
The Order of St. John always paid special attention to the publications documenting its military activities, in order to justify both its mission in defence of the faith and its requests to Christian princes for human and material resources. This editorial investment was particularly strong after the dramatic sieges of Rhodes (1480, 1522) and Malta (1565) by the Ottomans. In 1619, just a few years after the Order’s new landing in Malta, "Il glorioso trionfo della sacrosanta religion militare de’ nobili, valorosi e invitti cavalieri di S. Giovanni Gierosolimitano" was published in Italian and Spanish. This article analyses the narrative strategies used in this text within the context of coev…
A combinatorial algorithm related to the geometry of the moduli space of pointed curves
2002
As pointed out in Arbarello and Cornalba ( J. Alg. Geom. 5 (1996), 705–749), a theorem due to Di Francesco, Itzykson, and Zuber (see Di Francesco, Itzykson, and Zuber, Commun. Math. Phys. 151 (1993), 193–219) should yield new relations among cohomology classes of the moduli space of pointed curves. The coefficients appearing in these new relations can be determined by the algorithm we introduce in this paper.
