Artificial Intelligence + Distributed Systems = Agents
2009
The connection with Wirth’s book goes beyond the title, albeit confining the area to modern Artificial Intelligence (AI). Whereas thirty years ago, to devise effective programs, it became necessary to enhance the classical algorithmic framework with approaches applied to limited and focused subdomains, in the context of broad-band technology and semantic web, applications - running in open, heterogeneous, dynamic and uncertain environments-current paradigms are not enough, because of the shift from programs to processes. Beside the structure as position paper, to give more weight to some basic assertions, results of recent research are abridged and commented upon in line with new paradigms.…

Understanding Safety-Related Issues for Pedestrians at Modern Roundabouts
2012
This paper examines the safety-related issues for pedestrians at modern roundabouts. For this purpose findings of research studies documented in the scientific literature and best practices have been examined trying to focus on roundabout installations by a pedestrians safety perspective. Whereas one of the main reasons for which roundabouts are built is related to safety benefits, roundabout design features and implications in road casualties have been commented first to evaluate the influence of roundabouts on pedestrian safety and then to identify design elements that have such a high potential for traffic safety. At last, measures and treatments that can be taken in the roundabouts desi…
The Consequentialism of the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights : Towards the Fulfilment of ‘Do No Harm’
2019
In this paper I demonstrate that the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (UNGPs) leans heavily on consequentialism to inform the corporate responsibility to respect to human rights. Through the conception of ‘human rights impacts’, the UNGPs adopt a standard of human rights-based negative act consequentialism, capturing any business act that has the outcome of ‘removing or reducing’ an individual’s enjoyment of human rights. Such a lens is necessary because deontological human rights rules inadequately capture the full scope of global business harm to human rights. Consequentialist responsibility offers a much wider scope, of particular use around systemic, macro-level, harm,…

Assessment of Modelling in Mathematics Examination Papers: Ready-Made Models and Reproductive Mathematising
2013
In the Netherlands modelling is integrated into the mathematics curriculum. This chapter describes a study of modelling characteristics in recent mathematics examination papers. Results show that the tasks convey the message that mathematics can be found in unexpected situations. In many tasks a situation and a ready-made model are given and students are asked to work with the model. For mathematising, two design principles were: to finalise the parameters of a given model, and to reconstruct a given mathematical model from verbal descriptions and diagrams of a situation. These formats were coined as mechanistic and reproductive mathematising respectively. These formats have been introduced…
Virtual reality as a recovering environment - Implications for design principles
2020
In this study, a simulated, VR-based environment was built and analyzed to explore if a VR environment can possess recovering effects. 61 university students tested a VR application depicting a forest and answered survey questions about the experience. The results showed that VR-environment can indeed have recovering effects. Moreover, when comparing to previous studies in real forests, the recovery effects were at similar levels. The study results suggest that as the VR-based environments can possess recovery effects, they can work as recovery environments at schools or similar environments. The study results offer implications for the designers and propose design principles to build recov…
THE SCUOLA OFFICINA MECCANICA IN VILLAGGIO MONTE DEGLI ULIVI IN RIESI. READING AND ANALYSIS THROUGH SURVEYING.
2017
This research analyses in depth the project of one of the most representative work of the Modern Architectural Movement in Sicily – the Scuola Officina Meccanica, located in Villaggio Monte degli Ulivi, in Riesi (CL), designed by the architect Leonardo Ricci between 1962 and 1968. The main objective is to contribute to the conservation of the architectural work through its analysis and study for a careful and conscious restoration. The research methodology aimed to retrace the compositional and geometric principles that defined the design process and its unique configuration.
