The metabolic profile of lemon juice by proton HR-MAS NMR: the case of the PGI Interdonato Lemon of Messina
2015
We have studied by means of High Resolution Magic Angle Spinning Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (HR-MAS NMR) the metabolic profile of the famous Sicilian lemon known as 'Interdonato Lemon of Messina PGI'. The PGI Interdonato Lemon of Messina possesses high organoleptic and healthy properties and is recognised as one of the most nutrient fruits. In particular, some of its constituents are actively studied for their chemo-preventive and therapeutic properties. In this paper, we have determined by means of HR-MAS NMR spectroscopy the molar concentration of the main metabolites constituent the juice of PGI Interdonato Lemon of Messina in comparison with that of the not-PGI Interdonato Lemon of Turk…
A multiplex assay with 52 single nucleotide polymorphisms for human identification.
2006
A total of 52 SNPs reported to be polymorphic in European, Asian and African populations were selected. Of these, 42 were from the distal regions of each autosome (except chromosome 19). Nearly all selected SNPs were located at least 100 kb distant from known genes and commonly used STRs. We established a highly sensitive and reproducible SNP-typing method with amplification of all 52 DNA fragments in one PCR reaction followed by detection of the SNPs with two single base extension reactions analysed using CE. The amplicons ranged from 59 to 115 bp in length. Complete SNP profiles were obtained from 500 pg DNA. The 52 loci were efficiently amplified from degraded samples where previously on…
Optical systems for non-invasive cardiovascular biosensing
2005
Three portable prototype devices for cardiovascular biosensing based on reflection-type photoplethysmography (PPG) principle have been designed and clinically tested. The single-channel PPG finger sensor provides real-time measurements with fast calculation of the mean single-period PPG signal shape ("cardiovascular fingerprint", potentially useful for recognition). The dual-channel PPG system gives additional possibility to monitor on-line the arterial pulse wave transit time and its responses to physical exercises. The four-channel PPG system proved to be applicable for fast detection of cardiovascular pathologies, e.g. arterial occlusions in extremities. Design principles and software al…
Briganti, Longhi und «La Maniera italiana» (1961)
2022
Two previously unpublished testimonies by Giuliano Briganti and Roberto Longhi shed light on the role of the art historian in both the collection of iconographic material and the definition of the 'temperature' of colour during the pri…
The exact bounds for the degree of commutativity of a p-group of maximal class, I
2002
Abstract The first major study of p-groups of maximal class was made by Blackburn in 1958. He showed that an important invariant of these groups is the ‘degree of commutativity.’ Recently (1995) Fernandez-Alcober proved a best possible inequality for the degree of commutativity in terms of the order of the group. Recent computations for primes up to 43 show that sharper results can be obtained when an additional invariant is considered. A series of conjectures about this for all primes have been recorded in [A. Vera-Lopez et al., preprint]. In this paper, we prove two of these conjectures.
Rigorous Multimode Equivalent Network Representation of Multilayer Planar Circuits
2018
The objective of this paper is to extend the use of the Multimode Equivalent Network formulation, originally developed to analyze waveguide junctions, to the analysis of planar circuits that include arbitrary rectangular printed, zero thickness metallizations together with internal and external ports in the transverse plane. The theoretical derivations lead to an accurate and computationally efficient tool for the analysis of boxed, multilayer microwave printed circuits. In addition to theory, the tool developed is used here to analyze two practical examples: a dual-bandpass and a 4-pole bandpass boxed microstrip filters. Good agreement with respect to commercial software tools and measurem…
Convolutional Regression Tsetlin Machine: An Interpretable Approach to Convolutional Regression
2021
The Convolutional Tsetlin Machine (CTM), a variant of Tsetlin Machine (TM), represents patterns as straightforward AND-rules, to address the high computational complexity and the lack of interpretability of Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs). CTM has shown competitive performance on MNIST, Fashion-MNIST, and Kuzushiji-MNIST pattern classification benchmarks, both in terms of accuracy and memory footprint. In this paper, we propose the Convolutional Regression Tsetlin Machine (C-RTM) that extends the CTM to support continuous output problems in image analysis. C-RTM identifies patterns in images using the convolution operation as in the CTM and then maps the identified patterns into a real…
Cluster-based RF fingerprint positioning using LTE and WLAN signal strengths
2017
Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) positioning has become a popular localization system due to its low-cost installation and widespread availability of WLAN access points. Traditional grid-based radio frequency (RF) fingerprinting (GRFF) suffers from two drawbacks. First it requires costly and non-efficient data collection and updating procedure; secondly the method goes through time-consuming data pre-processing before it outputs user position. This paper proposes Cluster-based RF Fingerprinting (CRFF) to overcome these limitations by using modified Minimization of Drive Tests data which can be autonomously collected by cellular operators from their subscribers. The effect of environmental…
Nanomaterial-based molecularly imprinted polymers for pesticides detection: Recent trends and future prospects
2020
Abstract Pesticides have been widely used in agricultural and industrial production to prevent pests. So, sensing pesticides with high selectivity and sensitivity level plays a significant role in food safety management. Molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) based sensors overcome the current restriction of traditional detection approaches and offer great potential for efficient, low-cost and low detection limit using smart miniaturized equipment. But some drawbacks could come from the lack of electrocatalytic activity and conductivity of MIPs that restrict their utilization in the sensing field. The integration of NPs with MIPs has opened new ways for rapid screening and monitoring of pestic…
Novel Three-Phase Multi-Level Inverter with Reduced Components
2019
A new multilevel converter topology is proposed in this paper. Low component count and compact design are the main features of the proposed topology. Furthermore, the proposed converter is a capacitor-, inductor-, and diode-free configuration, allowing reducing the converter footprint, increasing the lifetime and simplifying the control strategy. Further, a comparative study is carried out to highlight the merits of the proposed circuit as compared to existing multilevel topologies. Finally, simulation results for the three-level version using different modulation strategies are presented.
